الزلزلة
AL-ZALZALAH
THE QUAKE
medinan 8 Verses
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
The surah that opens with the mention of The Quake of the earth in utter destruction at the end of the world. It takes its name from “the quake” (al-zalzalah) mentioned in verse 1. The surah deals with scenes from the Day of Judgement.The surah is also known as: The Convulsion, The Earthquake, The Quaking, The Shaking, The Shock.

إِذا زُلزِلَتِ الأَرضُ زِلزالَها

ʾidhā zulzilati l-ʾarḍu zilzālahā

When the earth is rocked with a terrible quake

وَأَخرَجَتِ الأَرضُ أَثقالَها

wa-ʾakhrajati l-ʾarḍu ʾathqālahā

and the earth discharges her burdens,
3
وَقالَ الإِنسانُ ما لَها

wa-qāla l-ʾinsānu mā lahā

and man says, ‘What is the matter with her?’
4
يَومَئِذٍ تُحَدِّثُ أَخبارَها

yawmaʾidhin tuḥaddithu ʾakhbārahā

On that day she will relate her chronicles
5
بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوحىٰ لَها

bi-ʾanna rabbaka ʾawḥā lahā

for her Lord will have inspired her.
6
يَومَئِذٍ يَصدُرُ النّاسُ أَشتاتًا لِيُرَوا أَعمالَهُم

yawmaʾidhin yaṣduru n-nāsu ʾashtātan li-yuraw ʾaʿmālahum

On that day, mankind will issue forth in various groups1to be shown their deeds.Or ‘separate groups.’

فَمَن يَعمَل مِثقالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيرًا يَرَهُ

fa-man yaʿmal mithqāla dharratin khayran yarahū

So whoever does an atom’s weight of goodwill see it,
8
وَمَن يَعمَل مِثقالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ

wa-man yaʿmal mithqāla dharratin sharran yarahū

and whoever does an atom’s weight of evilwill see it.
