Surah 9
AL-TAWBAH
REPENTANCE
medinan 129 Verses
The surah that announces for all time that God granted to His prophet, to the Emigrant and Helping Companions, and to three errant believers Repentance; and that oers the same opportunity to the unbelievers and the hypocrites, provided they forever renounce hostility, idolatry, and duplicity; and which further demonstrates the faithfulness of this oer in God’s decree of amnesty for the truly repentant idolaters who fought the believers at a place called Ḥunayn. It is named after “repentance” (tawbah) mentioned in verse 3 and verse 5. The surah opens by giving notice of the severance of the treaty with the idolaters because they had broken it, but the bulk of the surah deals with preparations and recruitment for the expedition to Tabūk (year 9/631). The hypocrites and those who stayed behind and failed to support the Prophet Muḥammad are all censured. This is the only surah not to begin with the formula Basmalah. The surah is also known as: Dispensation, Immunity.
1

barāʾatun mina llāhi wa-rasūlihī ʾilā lladhīna ʿāhadtum mina l-mushrikīna

[This is] a [declaration of] repudiation by Allah and His Apostle [addressed] to the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty:
2

fa-sīḥū fī l-ʾarḍi ʾarbaʿata ʾashhurin wa-ʿlamū ʾannakum ghayru muʿjizī llāhi wa-ʾanna llāha mukhzī l-kāfirīna

Travel [unmolested] in the land for four months, but know that you cannot thwart Allah, and that Allah shall disgrace the faithless.
3

wa-ʾadhānun mina llāhi wa-rasūlihī ʾilā n-nāsi yawma l-ḥajji l-ʾakbari ʾanna llāha barīʾun mina l-mushrikīna wa-rasūluhū fa-ʾin tubtum fa-huwa khayrun lakum wa-ʾin tawallaytum fa-ʿlamū ʾannakum ghayru muʿjizī llāhi wa-bashshiri lladhīna kafarū bi-ʿadhābin ʾalīmin

[This is] an announcement from Allah and His Apostle to all the people on the day of the greater ḥajj:1 that Allah and His Apostle repudiate the polytheists: If you repent2 that is better for you; but if you turn your backs [on Allah], know that you cannot thwart Allah, and inform the faithless of a painful punishmentThat is, the tenth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, the day on which the pilgrims perform some of the major rites of the ḥajj in Minā.That is, abandon idolatry.
4

ʾillā lladhīna ʿāhadtum mina l-mushrikīna thumma lam yanquṣūkum shayʾan wa-lam yuẓāhirū ʿalaykum ʾaḥadan fa-ʾatimmū ʾilayhim ʿahdahum ʾilā muddatihim ʾinna llāha yuḥibbu l-muttaqīna

(barring the polytheists with whom you have made a treaty, and who did not violate any [of its terms] with you, nor backed anyone against you. So fulfill the treaty with them until [the end of] its term. Indeed Allah loves the Godwary).
5

fa-ʾidhā nsalakha l-ʾashhuru l-ḥurumu fa-qtulū l-mushrikīna ḥaythu wajadtumūhum wa-khudhūhum wa-ḥṣurūhum wa-qʿudū lahum kulla marṣadin fa-ʾin tābū wa-ʾaqāmū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ʾātawu z-zakāta fa-khallū sabīlahum ʾinna llāha ghafūrun raḥīmun

Then, when the sacred months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them, capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush. But if they repent, and maintain the prayer and give the zakāt, then let them alone. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
6

wa-ʾin ʾaḥadun mina l-mushrikīna stajāraka fa-ʾajirhu ḥattā yasmaʿa kalāma llāhi thumma ʾablighhu maʾmanahū dhālika bi-ʾannahum qawmun lā yaʿlamūna

If any of the polytheists seeks asylum from you, grant him asylum until he hears the Word of Allah. Then convey him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.
7

kayfa yakūnu li-l-mushrikīna ʿahdun ʿinda llāhi wa-ʿinda rasūlihī ʾillā lladhīna ʿāhadtum ʿinda l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi fa-mā staqāmū lakum fa-staqīmū lahum ʾinna llāha yuḥibbu l-muttaqīna

How shall the polytheists have any [valid] treaty with Allah and His Apostle?! (Barring those with whom you made a treaty at the Holy Mosque; so long as they are steadfast with you, be steadfast with them. Indeed Allah loves the Godwary.)
8

kayfa wa-ʾin yaẓharū ʿalaykum lā yarqubū fīkum ʾillan wa-lā dhimmatan yurḍūnakum bi-ʾafwāhihim wa-taʾbā qulūbuhum wa-ʾaktharuhum fāsiqūna

How? For if they get the better of you, they will observe toward you neither kinship nor covenant. They please you with their mouths while their hearts spurn you; and most of them are transgressors.
9

ishtaraw bi-ʾāyāti llāhi thamanan qalīlan fa-ṣaddū ʿan sabīlihī ʾinnahum sāʾa mā kānū yaʿmalūna

They have sold the signs of Allah for a paltry gain, and have barred [the people] from His way. Evil indeed is what they have been doing.
10

lā yarqubūna fī muʾminin ʾillan wa-lā dhimmatan wa-ʾulāʾika humu l-muʿtadūna

They observe toward a believer neither kinship nor covenant, and it is they who are the transgressors.
11

fa-ʾin tābū wa-ʾaqāmū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ʾātawu z-zakāta fa-ʾikhwānukum fī d-dīni wa-nufaṣṣilu l-ʾāyāti li-qawmin yaʿlamūna

Yet if they repent and maintain the prayer and give the zakāt, then they are your brethren in faith. We elaborate the signs for a people who have knowledge.
12

wa-ʾin nakathū ʾaymānahum min baʿdi ʿahdihim wa-ṭaʿanū fī dīnikum fa-qātilū ʾaʾimmata l-kufri ʾinnahum lā ʾaymāna lahum laʿallahum yantahūna

But if they break their pledges after their having made a treaty and revile your religion, then fight the leaders of unfaith —indeed they have no [commitment to] pledges— maybe they will relinquish.
13

ʾa-lā tuqātilūna qawman nakathū ʾaymānahum wa-hammū bi-ʾikhrāji r-rasūli wa-hum badaʾūkum ʾawwala marratin ʾa-takhshawnahum fa-llāhu ʾaḥaqqu ʾan takhshawhu ʾin kuntum muʾminīna

Will you not make war on a people who broke their pledges and resolved to expel the Apostle, and opened [hostilities] against you initially? Do you fear them? But Allah is worthier of being feared by you, should you be faithful.
14

qātilūhum yuʿadhdhibhumu llāhu bi-ʾaydīkum wa-yukhzihim wa-yanṣurkum ʿalayhim wa-yashfi ṣudūra qawmin muʾminīna

Make war on them so that Allah may punish them by your hands and humiliate them, and help you against them, and heal the hearts of a faithful folk,
15

wa-yudhhib ghayẓa qulūbihim wa-yatūbu llāhu ʿalā man yashāʾu wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

and remove rage from their hearts, and Allah turns clemently to whomever He wishes, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise
16

ʾam ḥasibtum ʾan tutrakū wa-lammā yaʿlami llāhu lladhīna jāhadū minkum wa-lam yattakhidhū min dūni llāhi wa-lā rasūlihī wa-lā l-muʾminīna walījatan wa-llāhu khabīrun bi-mā taʿmalūna

Do you suppose that you will be let off while Allah has not yet ascertained those of you who wage jihād and those who do not take, besides Allah and His Apostle and the faithful, anyone as [their] confidant? Allah is well aware of what you do.
17

mā kāna li-l-mushrikīna ʾan yaʿmurū masājida llāhi shāhidīna ʿalā ʾanfusihim bi-l-kufri ʾulāʾika ḥabiṭat ʾaʿmāluhum wa-fī n-nāri hum khālidūna

The polytheists may not maintain Allah’s mosques while they are witness to their own unfaith. Their works have failed, and they shall remain in the Fire [forever].
18

ʾinnamā yaʿmuru masājida llāhi man ʾāmana bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ʾākhiri wa-ʾaqāma ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ʾātā z-zakāta wa-lam yakhsha ʾillā llāha fa-ʿasā ʾulāʾika ʾan yakūnū mina l-muhtadīna

Only those shall maintain Allah’s mosques who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and maintain the prayer and give the zakāt, and fear no one except Allah. They, hopefully, will be among the guided.
19

ʾa-jaʿaltum siqāyata l-ḥājji wa-ʿimārata l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi ka-man ʾāmana bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ʾākhiri wa-jāhada fī sabīli llāhi lā yastawūna ʿinda llāhi wa-llāhu lā yahdī l-qawma ẓ-ẓālimīna

Do you regard the providing of water to ḥajj pilgrims and the maintenance of the Holy Mosque as similar [in worth] to someone who has faith in Allah and [believes in] the Last Day and wages jihād in the way of Allah? They are not equal with Allah, and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.
20

alladhīna ʾāmanū wa-hājarū wa-jāhadū fī sabīli llāhi bi-ʾamwālihim wa-ʾanfusihim ʾaʿẓamu darajatan ʿinda llāhi wa-ʾulāʾika humu l-fāʾizūna

Those who have believed and migrated, and waged jihād in the way of Allah with their possessions and persons have a greater rank near Allah, and it is they who are the triumphant.
21

yubashshiruhum rabbuhum bi-raḥmatin minhu wa-riḍwānin wa-jannātin lahum fīhā naʿīmun muqīmun

Their Lord gives them the good news of His mercy and [His] pleasure, and for them there will be gardens with lasting bliss,
22

khālidīna fīhā ʾabadan ʾinna llāha ʿindahū ʾajrun ʿaẓīmun

to remain in them forever. With Allah indeed is a great reward.
23

yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū lā tattakhidhū ʾābāʾakum wa-ʾikhwānakum ʾawliyāʾa ʾini staḥabbū l-kufra ʿalā l-ʾīmāni wa-man yatawallahum minkum fa-ʾulāʾika humu ẓ-ẓālimūna

O you who have faith! Do not befriend your fathers and brothers1 if they prefer faithlessness to faith. Those of you who befriend them —it is they who are the wrongdoers.Or ‘Do not take your fathers and brothers for intimates.’
24

qul ʾin kāna ʾābāʾukum wa-ʾabnāʾukum wa-ʾikhwānukum wa-ʾazwājukum wa-ʿashīratukum wa-ʾamwālun-i qtaraftumūhā wa-tijāratun takhshawna kasādahā wa-masākinu tarḍawnahā ʾaḥabba ʾilaykum mina llāhi wa-rasūlihī wa-jihādin fī sabīlihī fa-tarabbaṣū ḥattā yaʾtiya llāhu bi-ʾamrihī wa-llāhu lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīna

Say, ‘If your fathers and your sons, your brethren, your spouses, and your kinsfolk, the possessions that you have acquired, the business you fear may suffer, and the dwellings you are fond of, are dearer to you than Allah and His Apostle and to waging jihād in His way, then wait until Allah issues His edict, and Allah does not guide the transgressing lot.
25

la-qad naṣarakumu llāhu fī mawāṭina kathīratin wa-yawma ḥunaynin ʾidh ʾaʿjabatkum kathratukum fa-lam tughni ʿankum shayʾan wa-ḍāqat ʿalaykumu l-ʾarḍu bi-mā raḥubat thumma wallaytum mudbirīna

Allah has certainly helped you in many situations, and on the day of Ḥunayn, when your great number impressed you, but it did not avail you in any way, and the earth became narrow for you in spite of its expanse,1 whereupon you turned your backs [to flee].That is, you were at a complete loss and at the end of your wits.
26

thumma ʾanzala llāhu sakīnatahū ʿalā rasūlihī wa-ʿalā l-muʾminīna wa-ʾanzala junūdan lam tarawhā wa-ʿadhdhaba lladhīna kafarū wa-dhālika jazāʾu l-kāfirīna

Then Allah sent down His composure upon His Apostle and upon the faithful, and He sent down hosts you did not see, and He punished the faithless, and that is the requital of the faithless.
27

thumma yatūbu llāhu min baʿdi dhālika ʿalā man yashāʾu wa-llāhu ghafūrun raḥīmun

Then Allah shall turn clemently after that to whomever He wishes. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
28

yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū ʾinnamā l-mushrikūna najasun fa-lā yaqrabū l-masjida l-ḥarāma baʿda ʿāmihim hādhā wa-ʾin khiftum ʿaylatan fa-sawfa yughnīkumu llāhu min faḍlihī ʾin shāʾa ʾinna llāha ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

O you who have faith! The polytheists are indeed unclean: so let them not approach the Holy Mosque after this year. Should you fear poverty, Allah will enrich you out of His grace, if He wishes. Indeed Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
29

qātilū lladhīna lā yuʾminūna bi-llāhi wa-lā bi-l-yawmi l-ʾākhiri wa-lā yuḥarrimūna mā ḥarrama llāhu wa-rasūluhū wa-lā yadīnūna dīna l-ḥaqqi mina lladhīna ʾūtū l-kitāba ḥattā yuʿṭū l-jizyata ʿan yadin wa-hum ṣāghirūna

Fight those who do not have faith in Allah nor [believe] in the Last Day, nor forbid what Allah and His Apostle have forbidden, nor practise the true religion, from among those who were given the Book, until they pay the tribute out of hand, degraded.
30

wa-qālati l-yahūdu ʿuzayrun-i bnu llāhi wa-qālati n-naṣārā l-masīḥu bnu llāhi dhālika qawluhum bi-ʾafwāhihim yuḍāhiʾūna qawla lladhīna kafarū min qablu qātalahumu llāhu ʾannā yuʾfakūna

The Jews say, ‘Ezra is the son of Allah,’ and the Christians say, ‘Christ is the son of Allah.’ That is an opinion that they mouth, imitating the opinions of the faithless of former times. May Allah assail them, where do they stray?!
31

ittakhadhū ʾaḥbārahum wa-ruhbānahum ʾarbāban min dūni llāhi wa-l-masīḥa bna maryama wa-mā ʾumirū ʾillā li-yaʿbudū ʾilāhan wāḥidan lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa subḥānahū ʿammā yushrikūna

They have taken their scribes and their monks as lords besides Allah, and also Christ, Mary’s son; though they were commanded to worship only the One God, there is no god except Him; He is far too immaculate to have any partners that they ascribe [to Him]!
32

yurīdūna ʾan yuṭfiʾū nūra llāhi bi-ʾafwāhihim wa-yaʾbā llāhu ʾillā ʾan yutimma nūrahū wa-law kariha l-kāfirūna

They desire to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah is intent on perfecting His light though the faithless should be averse.
33

huwa lladhī ʾarsala rasūlahū bi-l-hudā wa-dīni l-ḥaqqi li-yuẓhirahū ʿalā d-dīni kullihī wa-law kariha l-mushrikūna

It is He who has sent His Apostle with the guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it prevail over all religions, though the polytheists should be averse.
34

yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū ʾinna kathīran mina l-ʾaḥbāri wa-r-ruhbāni la-yaʾkulūna ʾamwāla n-nāsi bi-l-bāṭili wa-yaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli llāhi wa-lladhīna yaknizūna dh-dhahaba wa-l-fiḍḍata wa-lā yunfiqūnahā fī sabīli llāhi fa-bashshirhum bi-ʿadhābin ʾalīmin

O you who have faith! Indeed many of the scribes and monks wrongfully eat up the people’s wealth, and bar [them] from the way of Allah. Those who treasure up gold and silver, and do not spend it in the way of Allah, inform them of a painful punishment
35

yawma yuḥmā ʿalayhā fī nāri jahannama fa-tukwā bihā jibāhuhum wa-junūbuhum wa-ẓuhūruhum hādhā mā kanaztum li-ʾanfusikum fa-dhūqū mā kuntum taknizūna

on the day when these shall be heated in hellfire and therewith branded on their foreheads, their sides and their backs [and told]: ‘This is what you treasured up for yourselves! So taste what you have treasured!’
36

ʾinna ʿiddata sh-shuhūri ʿinda llāhi thnā ʿashara shahran fī kitābi llāhi yawma khalaqa s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍa minhā ʾarbaʿatun ḥurumun dhālika d-dīnu l-qayyimu fa-lā taẓlimū fīhinna ʾanfusakum wa-qātilū l-mushrikīna kāffatan ka-mā yuqātilūnakum kāffatan wa-ʿlamū ʾanna llāha maʿa l-muttaqīna

Indeed the number of months with Allah is twelve months in Allah’s Book, the day when He created the heavens and the earth. Of these, four are sacred. That is the upright religion. So do not wrong yourselves during them.1 Fight all the polytheists, just as they fight you all, and know that Allah is with the Godwary. The sacred months are Muḥarram, Rajab, Dhū al-Qaʿdah and Dhū al-Ḥijjah.
37

ʾinnamā n-nasīʾu ziyādatun fī l-kufri yuḍallu bihi lladhīna kafarū yuḥillūnahū ʿāman wa-yuḥarrimūnahū ʿāman li-yuwāṭiʾū ʿiddata mā ḥarrama llāhu fa-yuḥillū mā ḥarrama llāhu zuyyina lahum sūʾu ʾaʿmālihim wa-llāhu lā yahdī l-qawma l-kāfirīna

Indeed nasī1 is an increase in unfaith, whereby the faithless are led [further] astray. They allow it in one year and forbid it another year, so as to fit in with the number which Allah has made inviolable, thus permitting what Allah has forbidden. Their evil deeds appear to them as decorous, and Allah does not guide the faithless lot.A pre-Islamic practice of intercalation. Its exact character is somewhat uncertain.
38

yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū mā lakum ʾidhā qīla lakumu nfirū fī sabīli llāhi ththāqaltum ʾilā l-ʾarḍi ʾa-raḍītum bi-l-ḥayāti d-dunyā mina l-ʾākhirati fa-mā matāʿu l-ḥayāti d-dunyā fī l-ʾākhirati ʾillā qalīlun

O you who have faith! What is the matter with you that when you are told: ‘Go forth in the way of Allah,’ you sink heavily to the ground? Are you pleased with the life of this world instead of the Hereafter? But the wares of the life of this world compared with the Hereafter are but insignificant.
39

ʾillā tanfirū yuʿadhdhibkum ʿadhāban ʾalīman wa-yastabdil qawman ghayrakum wa-lā taḍurrūhu shayʾan wa-llāhu ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun

If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment, and replace you with another people, and you will not hurt Him in the least, and Allah has power over all things.
40

ʾillā tanṣurūhu fa-qad naṣarahu llāhu ʾidh ʾakhrajahu lladhīna kafarū thāniya thnayni ʾidh humā fī l-ghāri ʾidh yaqūlu li-ṣāḥibihī lā taḥzan ʾinna llāha maʿanā fa-ʾanzala llāhu sakīnatahū ʿalayhi wa-ʾayyadahū bi-junūdin lam tarawhā wa-jaʿala kalimata lladhīna kafarū s-suflā wa-kalimatu llāhi hiya l-ʿulyā wa-llāhu ʿazīzun ḥakīmun-i

If you do not help him,1 then Allah has already helped him when the faithless expelled him, as one of two [refugees], when the two of them were in the cave, he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; Allah is indeed with us.’ Then Allah sent down His composure upon him, and strengthened him with hosts you did not see, and He made the word of the faithless the lowest; and the word of Allah is the highest; and Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.That is, the Prophet (ṣ).
41

infirū khifāfan wa-thiqālan wa-jāhidū bi-ʾamwālikum wa-ʾanfusikum fī sabīli llāhi dhālikum khayrun lakum ʾin kuntum taʿlamūna

Go forth, whether [armed] lightly or heavily, and wage jihād with your possessions and persons in the way of Allah. That is better for you, should you know.
42

law kāna ʿaraḍan qarīban wa-safaran qāṣidan la-ttabaʿūka wa-lākin baʿudat ʿalayhimu sh-shuqqatu wa-sa-yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi lawi staṭaʿnā la-kharajnā maʿakum yuhlikūna ʾanfusahum wa-llāhu yaʿlamu ʾinnahum la-kādhibūna

Were it an accessible gain or a short journey, they would have surely followed you; but the distance seemed too far to them. Yet they will swear by Allah: ‘If we could, we would have surely gone forth with you.’ They [merely] destroy themselves. Allah knows that they are indeed liars.
43

ʿafā llāhu ʿanka li-ma ʾadhinta lahum ḥattā yatabayyana laka lladhīna ṣadaqū wa-taʿlama l-kādhibīna

May Allah excuse you! Why did you grant them leave [to stay behind] before those who told the truth were evident to you and you had ascertained the liars?
44

lā yastaʾdhinuka lladhīna yuʾminūna bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ʾākhiri ʾan yujāhidū bi-ʾamwālihim wa-ʾanfusihim wa-llāhu ʿalīmun bi-l-muttaqīna

Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day do not ask you for leave [exempting them] from waging jihād with their possessions and their persons, and Allah knows best the Godwary.
45

ʾinnamā yastaʾdhinuka lladhīna lā yuʾminūna bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ʾākhiri wa-rtābat qulūbuhum fa-hum fī raybihim yataraddadūna

Only those seek a leave [of exemption] from you who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day, and whose hearts are in doubt, so they waver in their doubt.
46

wa-law ʾarādū l-khurūja la-ʾaʿaddū lahū ʿuddatan wa-lākin kariha llāhu nbiʿāthahum fa-thabbaṭahum wa-qīla qʿudū maʿa l-qāʿidīna

Had they desired to go forth, they would have surely made some preparations for it; but Allah was averse to arouse them, so He held them back, and it was said [to them], ‘Be seated with those who sit back.’
47

law kharajū fīkum mā zādūkum ʾillā khabālan wa-la-ʾawḍaʿū khilālakum yabghūnakumu l-fitnata wa-fīkum sammāʿūna lahum wa-llāhu ʿalīmun bi-ẓ-ẓālimīna

Had they gone forth with you, they would have only added to your troubles, and they would have surely spread rumours in your midst, seeking to cause sedition among you. They have some spies among you, and Allah knows best the wrongdoers.
48

la-qadi btaghawu l-fitnata min qablu wa-qallabū laka l-ʾumūra ḥattā jāʾa l-ḥaqqu wa-ẓahara ʾamru llāhi wa-hum kārihūna

They certainly sought to cause sedition earlier, and upset the matters for you, until the truth came and Allah’s command prevailed, much as they were averse.
49

wa-minhum man yaqūlu ʾdhan lī wa-lā taftinnī ʾa-lā fī l-fitnati saqaṭū wa-ʾinna jahannama la-muḥīṭatun bi-l-kāfirīna

Among them there are some who say, ‘Give me leave, and do not put me to temptation.’1 Look! They have already fallen into temptation2 and indeed hell besieges the faithless.Or ‘do not push me into sinfulness (or unfaith),’ or ‘do not put me in a predicament.’ Cf. Ṭabarī and Ṭūsī.Or ‘sinfulness (or unfaith),’ or ‘a predicament,’ based on how the word ‘fitnah’ is interpreted in the preceding sentence.
50

ʾin tuṣibka ḥasanatun tasuʾhum wa-ʾin tuṣibka muṣībatun yaqūlū qad ʾakhadhnā ʾamranā min qablu wa-yatawallaw wa-hum fariḥūna

If some good should befall you, it upsets them; but if an adversity befalls you, they say, ‘We had already taken our precautions in advance,’ and they go away exulting.
51

qul lan yuṣībanā ʾillā mā kataba llāhu lanā huwa mawlānā wa-ʿalā llāhi fa-l-yatawakkali l-muʾminūna

Say, ‘Nothing will befall us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our master, and in Allah let all the faithful put their trust.’
52

qul hal tarabbaṣūna binā ʾillā ʾiḥdā l-ḥusnayayni wa-naḥnu natarabbaṣu bikum ʾan yuṣībakumu llāhu bi-ʿadhābin min ʿindihī ʾaw bi-ʾaydīnā fa-tarabbaṣū ʾinnā maʿakum mutarabbiṣūna

Say, ‘Do you await anything to befall us except one of the two excellences?1 But we await that Allah shall visit on you a punishment, from Him, or by our hands. So wait! We too are waiting along with you.’That is, victory or martyrdom.
53

qul ʾanfiqū ṭawʿan ʾaw karhan lan yutaqabbala minkum ʾinnakum kuntum qawman fāsiqīna

Say, ‘Spend willingly or unwillingly, it shall never be accepted from you; for you are indeed a transgressing lot.’
54

wa-mā manaʿahum ʾan tuqbala minhum nafaqātuhum ʾillā ʾannahum kafarū bi-llāhi wa-bi-rasūlihī wa-lā yaʾtūna ṣ-ṣalāta ʾillā wa-hum kusālā wa-lā yunfiqūna ʾillā wa-hum kārihūna

Nothing stops their charities from being accepted except that they have no faith in Allah and His Apostle and do not perform the prayer but lazily, and do not spend but reluctantly.
55

fa-lā tuʿjibka ʾamwāluhum wa-lā ʾawlāduhum ʾinnamā yurīdu llāhu li-yuʿadhdhibahum bihā fī l-ḥayāti d-dunyā wa-tazhaqa ʾanfusuhum wa-hum kāfirūna

So let not their wealth and children impress you: Allah only desires to punish them with these in the life of this world, and that their souls may depart while they are faithless.
56

wa-yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi ʾinnahum la-minkum wa-mā hum minkum wa-lākinnahum qawmun yafraqūna

They swear by Allah that they belong to you,1 but they do not belong to you. Rather they are a frightened lot. That is, to the faithful.
57

law yajidūna maljaʾan ʾaw maghārātin ʾaw muddakhalan la-wallaw ʾilayhi wa-hum yajmaḥūna

If they could find a refuge, or a hideout, or a hole [to creep into], they would turn to it in frantic haste.
58

wa-minhum man yalmizuka fī ṣ-ṣadaqāti fa-ʾin ʾuʿṭū minhā raḍū wa-ʾin lam yuʿṭaw minhā ʾidhā hum yaskhaṭūna

There are some of them who blame you regarding [the distribution of] the charities: if they are given from them, they are pleased, but if they are not given from them, behold, they are displeased.
59

wa-law ʾannahum raḍū mā ʾātāhumu llāhu wa-rasūluhū wa-qālū ḥasbunā llāhu sa-yuʾtīnā llāhu min faḍlihī wa-rasūluhū ʾinnā ʾilā llāhi rāghibūna

[It would have been better] if they had been pleased with what Allah and His Apostle gave them, and had said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us; Allah will give to us out of His grace, and His Apostle. Indeed to Allah do we eagerly turn.’
60

ʾinnamā ṣ-ṣadaqātu li-l-fuqarāʾi wa-l-masākīni wa-l-ʿāmilīna ʿalayhā wa-l-muʾallafati qulūbuhum wa-fī r-riqābi wa-l-ghārimīna wa-fī sabīli llāhi wa-bni s-sabīli farīḍatan mina llāhi wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

Charities are only for the poor and the needy, and those employed to collect them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and for [the freedom of] the slaves and the debtors, and in the way of Allah, and for the traveller. [This is] an ordinance from Allah, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
61

wa-minhumu lladhīna yuʾdhūna n-nabiyya wa-yaqūlūna huwa ʾudhunun qul ʾudhunu khayrin lakum yuʾminu bi-llāhi wa-yuʾminu li-l-muʾminīna wa-raḥmatun li-lladhīna ʾāmanū minkum wa-lladhīna yuʾdhūna rasūla llāhi lahum ʿadhābun ʾalīmun

Among them are those who torment the Prophet, and say, ‘He is an ear.’1 Say, ‘An ear that is good for you. He has faith in Allah and trusts the faithful, and is a mercy for those of you who have faith.’ As for those who torment the Apostle of Allah, there is a painful punishment for them. That is, easily persuadable, unquestioning and naive.
62

yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi lakum li-yurḍūkum wa-llāhu wa-rasūluhū ʾaḥaqqu ʾan yurḍūhu ʾin kānū muʾminīna

They swear to you by Allah, to please you; but Allah and His Apostle are worthier that they should please Him, should they be faithful.
63

ʾa-lam yaʿlamū ʾannahū man yuḥādidi llāha wa-rasūlahū fa-ʾanna lahū nāra jahannama khālidan fīhā dhālika l-khizyu l-ʿaẓīmu

Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Apostle, there awaits him the Fire of hell, to remain in it [forever]? That is the great disgrace.
64

yaḥdharu l-munāfiqūna ʾan tunazzala ʿalayhim sūratun tunabbiʾuhum bi-mā fī qulūbihim quli stahziʾū ʾinna llāha mukhrijun mā taḥdharūna

The hypocrites are apprehensive lest a sūrah should be sent down against them, informing them about what is in their hearts. Say, ‘Go on deriding. Allah will indeed bring out what you are apprehensive of.’
65

wa-la-ʾin saʾaltahum la-yaqūlunna ʾinnamā kunnā nakhūḍu wa-nalʿabu qul ʾa-bi-llāhi wa-ʾāyātihī wa-rasūlihī kuntum tastahziʾūna

If you question them [regarding their conduct], they will surely say, ‘We were just gossiping and amusing ourselves.’ Say, ‘Were you deriding Allah, His signs, and His apostles?
66

lā taʿtadhirū qad kafartum baʿda ʾīmānikum ʾin naʿfu ʿan ṭāʾifatin minkum nuʿadhdhib ṭāʾifatan bi-ʾannahum kānū mujrimīna

Do not make excuses. You have disbelieved after your faith.’ If We forgive a group among you, We will punish another group, for they have been guilty.
67

al-munāfiqūna wa-l-munāfiqātu baʿḍuhum min baʿḍin yaʾmurūna bi-l-munkari wa-yanhawna ʿani l-maʿrūfi wa-yaqbiḍūna ʾaydiyahum nasū llāha fa-nasiyahum ʾinna l-munāfiqīna humu l-fāsiqūna

The hypocrites, men and women, are all alike: they bid what is wrong and forbid what is right; and are tight-fisted.1 They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. The hypocrites are indeed the transgressors. That is, they are reluctant to spend in the way of Allah.
68

waʿada llāhu l-munāfiqīna wa-l-munāfiqāti wa-l-kuffāra nāra jahannama khālidīna fīhā hiya ḥasbuhum wa-laʿanahumu llāhu wa-lahum ʿadhābun muqīmun

Allah has promised the hypocrites, men and women, and the faithless, the Fire of hell, to remain in it [forever]. That suffices them. Allah has cursed them, and there is a lasting punishment for them.

ka-lladhīna min qablikum kānū ʾashadda minkum quwwatan wa-ʾakthara ʾamwālan wa-ʾawlādan fa-stamtaʿū bi-khalāqihim fa-stamtaʿtum bi-khalāqikum ka-mā stamtaʿa lladhīna min qablikum bi-khalāqihim wa-khuḍtum ka-lladhī khāḍū ʾulāʾika ḥabiṭat ʾaʿmāluhum fī d-dunyā wa-l-ʾākhirati wa-ʾulāʾika humu l-khāsirūna

[Hypocrites! Your case is] similar to those who were before you, who were more powerful than you and more abounding in wealth and children: they enjoyed their share [of worldly existence]; you too enjoy your share, just like those who were before you enjoyed their share, and you have gossiped [impiously] as they gossiped. They are the ones whose works have failed in this world and the Hereafter; and it is they who are the losers.

ʾa-lam yaʾtihim nabaʾu lladhīna min qablihim qawmi nūḥin wa-ʿādin wa-thamūda wa-qawmi ʾibrāhīma wa-ʾaṣḥābi madyana wa-l-muʾtafikāti ʾatathum rusuluhum bi-l-bayyināti fa-mā kāna llāhu li-yaẓlimahum wa-lākin kānū ʾanfusahum yaẓlimūna

Has there not come to them the account of those who were before them —the people of Noah, ʿĀd, and Thamūd, and the people of Abraham, the inhabitants of Midian, and the towns that were overturned?1 Their apostles brought them manifest proofs. So it was not Allah who wronged them, but it was they who used to wrong themselves. That is, the towns of the people of Lot. Cf. 53:53; 69:9.

wa-l-muʾminūna wa-l-muʾminātu baʿḍuhum ʾawliyāʾu baʿḍin yaʾmurūna bi-l-maʿrūfi wa-yanhawna ʿani l-munkari wa-yuqīmūna ṣ-ṣalāta wa-yuʾtūna z-zakāta wa-yuṭīʿūna llāha wa-rasūlahū ʾulāʾika sa-yarḥamuhumu llāhu ʾinna llāha ʿazīzun ḥakīmun

But the faithful, men and women, are comrades of one another: they bid what is right and forbid what is wrong and maintain the prayer, give the zakāt, and obey Allah and His Apostle. It is they to whom Allah will soon grant His mercy. Indeed Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.
72

waʿada llāhu l-muʾminīna wa-l-muʾmināti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru khālidīna fīhā wa-masākina ṭayyibatan fī jannāti ʿadnin wa-riḍwānun mina llāhi ʾakbaru dhālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu

Allah has promised the faithful, men and women, gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever], and good dwellings in the Gardens of Eden.1 Yet Allah’s pleasure is greater [than all these]; that is the great success.Or ‘eternal [or everlasting] gardens.’ Cf. 13:23; 16:31; 18:31; 19:61; 20:76; 35:33; 38:50; 40:8; 61:12; 98:8.

O Prophet! Wage jihād against the faithless and the hypocrites, and be severe with them. Their refuge shall be hell, and it is an evil destination.
74

yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi mā qālū wa-la-qad qālū kalimata l-kufri wa-kafarū baʿda ʾislāmihim wa-hammū bi-mā lam yanālū wa-mā naqamū ʾillā ʾan ʾaghnāhumu llāhu wa-rasūluhū min faḍlihī fa-ʾin yatūbū yaku khayran lahum wa-ʾin yatawallaw yuʿadhdhibhumu llāhu ʿadhāban ʾalīman fī d-dunyā wa-l-ʾākhirati wa-mā lahum fī l-ʾarḍi min waliyyin wa-lā naṣīrin

They swear by Allah that they did not say it. But they certainly did utter the word of unfaith and renounced faith after their islām. They contemplated what they could not achieve, and they were vindictive only because Allah and His Apostle had enriched them out of His grace. Yet if they repent, it will be better for them; but if they turn away, Allah shall punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they shall not find on the earth any guardian or helper.
75

wa-minhum man ʿāhada llāha la-ʾin ʾātānā min faḍlihī la-naṣṣaddaqanna wa-la-nakūnanna mina ṣ-ṣāliḥīna

Among them are those who made a pledge with Allah: ‘If He gives us out of His grace, we will surely give the zakāt and we will surely be among the righteous.’
76

fa-lammā ʾātāhum min faḍlihī bakhilū bihī wa-tawallaw wa-hum muʿriḍūna

But when He gave them out of His grace, they begrudged it and turned away, being disregardful.
77

fa-ʾaʿqabahum nifāqan fī qulūbihim ʾilā yawmi yalqawnahū bi-mā ʾakhlafū llāha mā waʿadūhu wa-bi-mā kānū yakdhibūna

So He caused hypocrisy to ensue in their hearts until the day they will encounter Him, because of their going back on what they had promised Allah and because of the lies they used to tell.
78

ʾa-lam yaʿlamū ʾanna llāha yaʿlamu sirrahum wa-najwāhum wa-ʾanna llāha ʿallāmu l-ghuyūbi

Do they not know that Allah knows their secret [thoughts] and [hears] their secret talks, and that Allah is knower of all that is Unseen?
79

alladhīna yalmizūna l-muṭṭawwiʿīna mina l-muʾminīna fī ṣ-ṣadaqāti wa-lladhīna lā yajidūna ʾillā juhdahum fa-yaskharūna minhum sakhira llāhu minhum wa-lahum ʿadhābun ʾalīmun-i

Those who blame the voluntary donors from among the faithful concerning the charities— and as for those who do not find [anything] except [what] their means [permit], they ridicule them— Allah shall put them to ridicule, and there is a painful punishment for them.
80

istaghfir lahum ʾaw lā tastaghfir lahum ʾin tastaghfir lahum sabʿīna marratan fa-lan yaghfira llāhu lahum dhālika bi-ʾannahum kafarū bi-llāhi wa-rasūlihī wa-llāhu lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīna

Whether you plead forgiveness for them or do not plead forgiveness for them, even if you plead forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah shall never forgive them because they defied Allah and His Apostle; and Allah does not guide the transgressing lot.
81

fariḥa l-mukhallafūna bi-maqʿadihim khilāfa rasūli llāhi wa-karihū ʾan yujāhidū bi-ʾamwālihim wa-ʾanfusihim fī sabīli llāhi wa-qālū lā tanfirū fī l-ḥarri qul nāru jahannama ʾashaddu ḥarran law kānū yafqahūna

Those who were left behind1 exulted for their sitting back against [the command of] the Apostle of Allah,2 and were reluctant to wage jihād with their possessions and persons in the way of Allah, and they said, ‘Do not go forth in this heat.’ Say, The fire of hell is severer in heat, should they understand. That is, those who were kept from participating in jihād with the Prophet (ṣ). Cf. verse 46.Or ‘for their staying away from [the expedition of] the Apostle of Allah.’
82

fa-l-yaḍḥakū qalīlan wa-l-yabkū kathīran jazāʾan bi-mā kānū yaksibūna

So let them laugh a little; much will they weep as a requital for what they used to earn.
83

fa-ʾin rajaʿaka llāhu ʾilā ṭāʾifatin minhum fa-staʾdhanūka li-l-khurūji fa-qul lan takhrujū maʿiya ʾabadan wa-lan tuqātilū maʿiya ʿaduwwan ʾinnakum raḍītum bi-l-quʿūdi ʾawwala marratin fa-qʿudū maʿa l-khālifīna

If Allah brings you back [from the battlefront] to a group of them and they seek your permission to go forth, say, ‘You shall never go forth with me, and you shall not fight with me against any enemy. You were indeed pleased to sit back the first time, so sit back with those who stay behind.’
84

wa-lā tuṣalli ʿalā ʾaḥadin minhum māta ʾabadan wa-lā taqum ʿalā qabrihī ʾinnahum kafarū bi-llāhi wa-rasūlihī wa-mātū wa-hum fāsiqūna

And never pray over any of them when he dies, nor stand at his graveside. They indeed defied Allah and His Apostle and died as transgressors.
85

wa-lā tuʿjibka ʾamwāluhum wa-ʾawlāduhum ʾinnamā yurīdu llāhu ʾan yuʿadhdhibahum bihā fī d-dunyā wa-tazhaqa ʾanfusuhum wa-hum kāfirūna

Let not their possessions or their children impress you. Allah only desires to punish them with these in this world, and that their souls may depart while they are faithless.
86

wa-ʾidhā ʾunzilat sūratun ʾan ʾāminū bi-llāhi wa-jāhidū maʿa rasūlihi staʾdhanaka ʾulū ṭ-ṭawli minhum wa-qālū dharnā nakun maʿa l-qāʿidīna

When a sūrah is sent down [declaring]: ‘Have faith in Allah, and wage jihād along with His Apostle, the affluent among them ask you for leave, and say, ‘Let us remain with those who sit back.’
87

raḍū bi-ʾan yakūnū maʿa l-khawālifi wa-ṭubiʿa ʿalā qulūbihim fa-hum lā yafqahūna

They are pleased to be with those who stay back,1 and their hearts have been sealed. So they do not understand. That is, along with women and children, the invalid and the decrepit.
88

lākini r-rasūlu wa-lladhīna ʾāmanū maʿahū jāhadū bi-ʾamwālihim wa-ʾanfusihim wa-ʾulāʾika lahumu l-khayrātu wa-ʾulāʾika humu l-mufliḥūna

But the Apostle and the faithful who are with him wage jihād with their possessions and persons, and to such belong all the blessings, and it is they who are the felicitous.
89

ʾaʿadda llāhu lahum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru khālidīna fīhā dhālika l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu

Allah has prepared for them gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever]. That is the great success.
90

wa-jāʾa l-muʿadhdhirūna mina l-ʾaʿrābi li-yuʾdhana lahum wa-qaʿada lladhīna kadhabū llāha wa-rasūlahū sa-yuṣību lladhīna kafarū minhum ʿadhābun ʾalīmun

Some of the Bedouins who sought to be excused came so that they may be granted leave [to stay back]; while those who lied to Allah and His Apostle sat back. Soon there shall visit the faithless among them a painful punishment.
91

laysa ʿalā ḍ-ḍuʿafāʾi wa-lā ʿalā l-marḍā wa-lā ʿalā lladhīna lā yajidūna mā yunfiqūna ḥarajun ʾidhā naṣaḥū li-llāhi wa-rasūlihī mā ʿalā l-muḥsinīna min sabīlin wa-llāhu ghafūrun raḥīmun

There is no blame on the weak, nor on the sick, nor on those who do not find anything to spend, so long as they are sincere to Allah and His Apostle. There is no [cause for] blaming the virtuous, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
92

wa-lā ʿalā lladhīna ʾidhā mā ʾatawka li-taḥmilahum qulta lā ʾajidu mā ʾaḥmilukum ʿalayhi tawallaw wa-ʾaʿyunuhum tafīḍu mina d-damʿi ḥazanan ʾallā yajidū mā yunfiqūna

Nor [is there any blame] on those to whom, when they came to you to provide them with a mount, you said, ‘I do not find any mount for you,’ and they turned back, their eyes flowing with tears, grieved because they did not find any means to spend.
93

ʾinnamā s-sabīlu ʿalā lladhīna yastaʾdhinūnaka wa-hum ʾaghniyāʾu raḍū bi-ʾan yakūnū maʿa l-khawālifi wa-ṭabaʿa llāhu ʿalā qulūbihim fa-hum lā yaʿlamūna

The blame lies only on those who ask leave of you [to stay behind] though they are well-off. They are pleased to be with those who stay back; Allah has set a seal on their hearts, so they do not know [the outcome of their conduct].
94

yaʿtadhirūna ʾilaykum ʾidhā rajaʿtum ʾilayhim qul lā taʿtadhirū lan nuʾmina lakum qad nabbaʾanā llāhu min ʾakhbārikum wa-sa-yarā llāhu ʿamalakum wa-rasūluhū thumma turaddūna ʾilā ʿālimi l-ghaybi wa-sh-shahādati fa-yunabbiʾukum bi-mā kuntum taʿmalūna

They will offer you excuses when you return to them. Say, ‘Do not make excuses; we will never believe you. Allah has informed us of your state of affairs. Allah and His Apostle will observe your conduct, then you will be returned to the Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, and He will inform you concerning what you used to do.’
95

sa-yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi lakum ʾidhā nqalabtum ʾilayhim li-tuʿriḍū ʿanhum fa-ʾaʿriḍū ʿanhum ʾinnahum rijsun wa-maʾwāhum jahannamu jazāʾan bi-mā kānū yaksibūna

They will swear to you by Allah, when you return to them, that you may leave them alone. So leave them alone. They are indeed filth, and their refuge shall be hell, a requital for what they used to earn.
96

yaḥlifūna lakum li-tarḍaw ʿanhum fa-ʾin tarḍaw ʿanhum fa-ʾinna llāha lā yarḍā ʿani l-qawmi l-fāsiqīna

They swear to you that you may be reconciled to them. But even if you are reconciled to them Allah shall not be reconciled to the transgressing lot.
97

al-ʾaʿrābu ʾashaddu kufran wa-nifāqan wa-ʾajdaru ʾallā yaʿlamū ḥudūda mā ʾanzala llāhu ʿalā rasūlihī wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

The Bedouins are more obdurate in unfaith and hypocrisy, and more apt to be ignorant of the precepts that Allah has sent down to His Apostle, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
98

wa-mina l-ʾaʿrābi man yattakhidhu mā yunfiqu maghraman wa-yatarabbaṣu bikumu d-dawāʾira ʿalayhim dāʾiratu s-sawʾi wa-llāhu samīʿun ʿalīmun

Among the Bedouins are those who regard what they spend as a loss, and they watch for a reversal of your fortunes. Theirs shall be an adverse turn of fortune, and Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.
99

wa-mina l-ʾaʿrābi man yuʾminu bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ʾākhiri wa-yattakhidhu mā yunfiqu qurubātin ʿinda lāhi wa-ṣalawāti r-rasūli ʾa-lā ʾinnahā qurbatun lahum sa-yudkhiluhumu llāhu fī raḥmatihī ʾinna llāha ghafūrun raḥīmun

Yet among the Bedouins are [also] those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and regard what they spend as [a means of attaining] nearness to Allah and the blessings of the Apostle. Look! It shall indeed bring them nearness, and Allah will admit them into His mercy. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

wa-s-sābiqūna l-ʾawwalūna mina l-muhājirīna wa-l-ʾanṣāri wa-lladhīna ttabaʿūhum bi-ʾiḥsānin raḍiya llāhu ʿanhum wa-raḍū ʿanhu wa-ʾaʿadda lahum jannātin tajrī taḥtahā l-ʾanhāru khālidīna fīhā ʾabadan dhālika l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu

The early vanguard of the Emigrants and the Helpers and those who followed them in virtue, —Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them forever. That is the great success.

wa-mimman ḥawlakum mina l-ʾaʿrābi munāfiqūna wa-min ʾahli l-madīnati maradū ʿalā n-nifāqi lā taʿlamuhum naḥnu naʿlamuhum sa-nuʿadhdhibuhum marratayni thumma yuraddūna ʾilā ʿadhābin ʿaẓīmin

There are hypocrites among the Bedouins around you and among the townspeople of Madinah, steeped in hypocrisy. You do not know them; We know them, and We will punish them twice, then they shall be consigned to a great punishment.
102

wa-ʾākharūna ʿtarafū bi-dhunūbihim khalaṭū ʿamalan ṣāliḥan wa-ʾākhara sayyiʾan ʿasā llāhu ʾan yatūba ʿalayhim ʾinna llāha ghafūrun raḥīmun

[There are] others who have confessed to their sins, having mixed up righteous conduct with other that was evil. Maybe Allah will accept their repentance. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
103

khudh min ʾamwālihim ṣadaqatan tuṭahhiruhum wa-tuzakkīhim bihā wa-ṣalli ʿalayhim ʾinna ṣalātaka sakanun lahum wa-llāhu samīʿun ʿalīmun

Take charity from their possessions to cleanse them and purify them thereby, and bless them. Indeed your blessing is a comfort to them, and Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.
104

ʾa-lam yaʿlamū ʾanna llāha huwa yaqbalu t-tawbata ʿan ʿibādihī wa-yaʾkhudhu ṣ-ṣadaqāti wa-ʾanna llāha huwa t-tawwābu r-raḥīmu

Do they not know that it is Allah who accepts the repentance of His servants and receives the charities, and that it is Allah who is the All-clement, the All-merciful?
105

wa-quli ʿmalū fa-sa-yarā llāhu ʿamalakum wa-rasūluhū wa-l-muʾminūna wa-sa-turaddūna ʾilā ʿālimi l-ghaybi wa-sh-shahādati fa-yunabbiʾukum bi-mā kuntum taʿmalūna

And say, ‘Go on working: Allah will see your conduct, and His Apostle and the faithful [as well], and you will be returned to the Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, and He will inform you concerning what you used to do.
106

wa-ʾākharūna murjawna li-ʾamri llāhi ʾimmā yuʿadhdhibuhum wa-ʾimmā yatūbu ʿalayhim wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

[There are] others waiting Allah’s edict: either He shall punish them, or turn to them clemently, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
107

wa-lladhīna ttakhadhū masjidan ḍirāran wa-kufran wa-tafrīqan bayna l-muʾminīna wa-ʾirṣādan li-man ḥāraba llāha wa-rasūlahū min qablu wa-la-yaḥlifunna ʾin ʾaradnā ʾillā l-ḥusnā wa-llāhu yashhadu ʾinnahum la-kādhibūna

As for those who took to a mosque for sabotage and for defiance, and to cause division among the faithful, and for the purpose of ambush [used] by those who have fought Allah and His Apostle before —they will surely swear: ‘We desired nothing but good,’ and Allah bears witness that they are indeed liars.
108

lā taqum fīhi ʾabadan la-masjidun ʾussisa ʿalā t-taqwā min ʾawwali yawmin ʾaḥaqqu ʾan taqūma fīhi fīhi rijālun yuḥibbūna ʾan yataṭahharū wa-llāhu yuḥibbu l-muṭṭahhirīna

Do not stand in it ever! A mosque founded on Godwariness from the [very] first day is worthier that you stand in it [for prayer]. Therein are men who love to keep pure, and Allah loves those who keep pure.
109

ʾa-fa-man ʾassasa bunyānahū ʿalā taqwā mina llāhi wa-riḍwānin khayrun ʾam man ʾassasa bunyānahū ʿalā shafā jurufin hārin fa-nhāra bihī fī nāri jahanamma wa-llāhu lā yahdī l-qawma ẓ-ẓālimīna

Is he who founds his building on Godwariness and [the pursuit of Allah’s] pleasure better-off or he who founds his building on the brink of a collapsing bank which collapses with him into the fire of hell? And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.
110

lā yazālu bunyānuhumu lladhī banaw rībatan fī qulūbihim ʾillā ʾan taqaṭṭaʿa qulūbuhum wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

The building they have built will never cease to be [a source of] disquiet in their hearts until their hearts are cut into pieces, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
111

ʾinna llāha shtarā mina l-muʾminīna ʾanfusahum wa-ʾamwālahum bi-ʾanna lahumu l-jannata yuqātilūna fī sabīli llāhi fa-yaqtulūna wa-yuqtalūna waʿdan ʿalayhi ḥaqqan fī t-tawrāti wa-l-ʾinjīli wa-l-qurʾāni wa-man ʾawfā bi-ʿahdihī mina llāhi fa-stabshirū bi-bayʿikumu lladhī bāyaʿtum bihī wa-dhālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu

Indeed Allah has bought from the faithful their souls and their possessions for paradise to be theirs: they fight in the way of Allah, kill, and are killed. A promise binding upon Him in the Torah and the Evangel and the Qurʾān. And who is truer to his promise than Allah? So rejoice in the bargain you have made with Him, and that is the great success.
112

at-tāʾibūna l-ʿābidūna l-ḥāmidūna s-sāʾiḥūna r-rākiʿūna s-sājidūna l-ʾāmirūna bi-l-maʿrūfi wa-n-nāhūna ʿani l-munkari wa-l-ḥāfiẓūna li-ḥudūdi llāhi wa-bashshiri l-muʾminīna

[The faithful are] penitent, devout, celebrators of Allah’s praise, wayfarers,1 who bow [and] prostrate [in prayer], bid what is right and forbid what is wrong, and keep Allah’s bounds —and give good news to the faithful.Or ‘those who fast.’
113

mā kāna li-n-nabiyyi wa-lladhīna ʾāmanū ʾan yastaghfirū li-l-mushrikīna wa-law kānū ʾulī qurbā min baʿdi mā tabayyana lahum ʾannahum ʾaṣḥābu l-jaḥīmi

The Prophet and the faithful may not plead for the forgiveness of the polytheists, even if they should be [their] relatives, after it has become clear to them that they will be the inmates of hell.
114

wa-mā kāna stighfāru ʾibrāhīma li-ʾabīhi ʾillā ʿan mawʿidatin waʿadahā ʾiyyāhu fa-lammā tabayyana lahū ʾannahū ʿaduwwun li-llāhi tabarraʾa minhu ʾinna ʾibrāhīma la-ʾawwāhun ḥalīmun

Abraham’s pleading forgiveness for his father was only to fulfill a promise he had made him.1 So when it became manifest to him that he was an enemy of God, he repudiated him. Indeed Abraham was most plaintive and forbearing.Cf. 19:47, 60:4.
115

wa-mā kāna llāhu li-yuḍilla qawman baʿda ʾidh hadāhum ḥattā yubayyina lahum mā yattaqūna ʾinna llāha bi-kulli shayʾin ʿalīmun

Allah does not lead any people astray after He has guided them until He has made clear to them what they should beware of. Indeed Allah has knowledge of all things.
116

ʾinna llāha lahū mulku s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi yuḥyī wa-yumītu wa-mā lakum min dūni llāhi min waliyyin wa-lā naṣīrin

Indeed to Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and brings death. And besides Allah you do not have any guardian or helper.
117

la-qad tāba llāhu ʿalā n-nabiyyi wa-l-muhājirīna wa-l-ʾanṣāri lladhīna ttabaʿūhu fī sāʿati l-ʿusrati min baʿdi mā kāda yazīghu qulūbu farīqin minhum thumma tāba ʿalayhim ʾinnahū bihim raʾūfun raḥīmun

Certainly Allah turned clemently to the Prophet and the Emigrants and the Helpers, who followed him in the hour of difficulty, after the hearts of a part of them were about to swerve. Then He turned clemently to them —indeed He is most kind and merciful to them—
118

wa-ʿalā th-thalāthati lladhīna khullifū ḥattā ʾidhā ḍāqat ʿalayhimu l-ʾarḍu bi-mā raḥubat wa-ḍāqat ʿalayhim ʾanfusuhum wa-ẓannū ʾan lā maljaʾa mina llāhi ʾillā ʾilayhi thumma tāba ʿalayhim li-yatūbū ʾinna llāha huwa t-tawwābu r-raḥīmu

and to the three who were left behind. When the earth became narrow for them with [all] its expanse, and their own souls weighed heavily on them,1 and they knew that there was no refuge from Allah except in Him, then He turned clemently toward them so that they might be penitent. Indeed Allah is the All-clement, the All-merciful.That is, they were at a complete loss and were oppressed by a feeling of guilt.
119

yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū ttaqū llāha wa-kūnū maʿa ṣ-ṣādiqīna

O you who have faith! Be wary of Allah, and be with the Truthful.
120

mā kāna li-ʾahli l-madīnati wa-man ḥawlahum mina l-ʾaʿrābi ʾan yatakhallafū ʿan rasūli llāhi wa-lā yarghabū bi-ʾanfusihim ʿan nafsihī dhālika bi-ʾannahum lā yuṣībuhum ẓamaʾun wa-lā naṣabun wa-lā makhmaṣatun fī sabīli llāhi wa-lā yaṭaʾūna mawṭiʾan yaghīẓu l-kuffāra wa-lā yanālūna min ʿaduwwin naylan ʾillā kutiba lahum bihī ʿamalun ṣāliḥun ʾinna llāha lā yuḍīʿu ʾajra l-muḥsinīna

It is not fitting for the people of Madinah and the Bedouins around them to hang back behind the Apostle of Allah1 and prefer their own lives to his life. That is because they neither experience any thirst, nor fatigue, nor hunger, in the way of Allah, nor do they tread any ground enraging the faithless, nor do they gain any ground against an enemy but a righteous deed is written for them on its account. Indeed Allah does not waste the reward of the virtuous. That is, by failing to accompany the Apostle of Allah during his campaigns.
121

wa-lā yunfiqūna nafaqatan ṣaghīratan wa-lā kabīratan wa-lā yaqṭaʿūna wādiyan ʾillā kutiba lahum li-yajziyahumu llāhu ʾaḥsana mā kānū yaʿmalūna

And neither do they incur any expense, big or small, nor do they cross any valley, but it is written to their account, so that Allah may reward them by the best of what they used to do.
122

wa-mā kāna l-muʾminūna li-yanfirū kāffatan fa-law-lā nafara min kulli firqatin minhum ṭāʾifatun li-yatafaqqahū fī d-dīni wa-li-yundhirū qawmahum ʾidhā rajaʿū ʾilayhim laʿallahum yaḥdharūna

Yet it is not for the faithful to go forth en masse.1 But why should not there go forth a group from each of their sections to become learned in religion, and to warn their people when they return to them, so that they may beware? That is, it is not feasible, or reasonable, for all the faithful to set out for Madīnah, the Prophet’s city, for the study of the religious sciences.
123

yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū qātilū lladhīna yalūnakum mina l-kuffāri wa-l-yajidū fīkum ghilẓatan wa-ʿlamū ʾanna llāha maʿa l-muttaqīna

O you who have faith! Fight the faithless who are in your vicinity, and let them find severity in you, and know that Allah is with the Godwary.
124

wa-ʾidhā mā ʾunzilat sūratun fa-minhum man yaqūlu ʾayyukum zādathu hādhihī ʾīmānan fa-ʾammā lladhīna ʾāmanū fa-zādathum ʾīmānan wa-hum yastabshirūna

Whenever a sūrah is sent down, there are some of them1 who say, ‘Which of you did it increase in faith?’ As for those who have faith, it increases them in faith, and they rejoice. That is, the hypocrites.
125

wa-ʾammā lladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun fa-zādathum rijsan ʾilā rijsihim wa-mātū wa-hum kāfirūna

But as for those in whose heart is a sickness, it only adds defilement to their defilement, and they die while they are faithless.
126

ʾa-wa-lā yarawna ʾannahum yuftanūna fī kulli ʿāmin marratan ʾaw marratayni thumma lā yatūbūna wa-lā hum yadhdhakkarūna

Do they not see that they are tried once or twice every year? Yet they neither repent, nor do they take admonition.
127

wa-ʾidhā mā ʾunzilat sūratun naẓara baʿḍuhum ʾilā baʿḍin hal yarākum min ʾaḥadin thumma nṣarafū ṣarafa llāhu qulūbahum bi-ʾannahum qawmun lā yafqahūna

And whenever a sūrah is sent down, they look at one another: ‘Is anybody observing you?’ Then they slip away. Allah has turned aside their hearts, for they are a people who do not understand.
128

la-qad jāʾakum rasūlun min ʾanfusikum ʿazīzun ʿalayhi mā ʿanittum ḥarīṣun ʿalaykum bi-l-muʾminīna raʾūfun raḥīmun

There has certainly come to you an apostle from among yourselves. Grievous to him is your distress; he has deep concern for you, and is most kind and merciful to the faithful.
129

fa-ʾin tawallaw fa-qul ḥasbiya llāhu lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa-huwa rabbu l-ʿarshi l-ʿaẓīmi

But if they turn their backs [on you], say, ‘Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god except Him. In Him I have put my trust and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.’
