The surah that opens with the edifying question regarding human awareness of the coming of a sure cataclysmic event it calls The Enveloper. It takes its name from “the enveloper” (al-ghāshiyah) mentioned in verse 1. The surah serves to warn the disbelievers, encourage the Prophet Muhammad and the believers, and absolve him of responsibility for the disbelievers.The surah is also known as: The Overpowering, The Overwhelmer, The Overwhelming, The Overwhelming Event, The Pall, The Whelming.

هَل أَتاكَ حَديثُ الغاشِيَةِ
hal ʾatāka ḥadīthu l-ghāshiyati
Did you receive the account of the Enveloper?
2
وُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ خاشِعَةٌ
wujūhun yawmaʾidhin khāshiʿatun
Some faces on that day will be humbled,
3
عامِلَةٌ ناصِبَةٌ
ʿāmilatun nāṣibatun
wrought-up and weary:
4
تَصلىٰ نارًا حامِيَةً
taṣlā nāran ḥāmiyatan
they will enter a scorching fire,
5
تُسقىٰ مِن عَينٍ آنِيَةٍ
tusqā min ʿaynin ʾāniyatin
and made to drink from a boiling spring.
6
لَيسَ لَهُم طَعامٌ إِلّا مِن ضَريعٍ
laysa lahum ṭaʿāmun ʾillā min ḍarīʿin
They will have no food except cactus,
7
لا يُسمِنُ وَلا يُغني مِن جوعٍ
lā yusminu wa-lā yughnī min jūʿin
neither nourishing,nor availing against hunger.
8
وُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ ناعِمَةٌ
wujūhun yawmaʾidhin nāʿimatun
Some faces on that day will be joyous,
9
لِسَعيِها راضِيَةٌ
li-saʿyihā rāḍiyatun
pleased with their endeavour;
10
في جَنَّةٍ عالِيَةٍ
fī jannatin ʿāliyatin
in a lofty paradise,
11
لا تَسمَعُ فيها لاغِيَةً
lā tasmaʿu fīhā lāghiyatan
wherein they will not hear any vain talk.
12
فيها عَينٌ جارِيَةٌ
fīhā ʿaynun jāriyatun
In it there is a flowing spring
13
فيها سُرُرٌ مَرفوعَةٌ
fīhā sururun marfūʿatun
and in it there are raised couches,
14
وَأَكوابٌ مَوضوعَةٌ
wa-ʾakwābun mawḍūʿatun
and goblets set,
15
وَنَمارِقُ مَصفوفَةٌ
wa-namāriqu maṣfūfatun
and cushions laid out in an array,
16
وَزَرابِيُّ مَبثوثَةٌ
wa-zarābiyyu mabthūthatun
and carpets spread out.
17
أَفَلا يَنظُرونَ إِلَى الإِبِلِ كَيفَ خُلِقَت
ʾa-fa-lā yanẓurūna ʾilā l-ʾibili kayfa khuliqat
Do they not observe1 the camel,[to see] how she has been created?Or ‘consider.’
18
وَإِلَى السَّماءِ كَيفَ رُفِعَت
wa-ʾilā s-samāʾi kayfa rufiʿat
and the sky, how it has been raised?
19
وَإِلَى الجِبالِ كَيفَ نُصِبَت
wa-ʾilā l-jibāli kayfa nuṣibat
and the mountains, how they have been set?
20
وَإِلَى الأَرضِ كَيفَ سُطِحَت
wa-ʾilā l-ʾarḍi kayfa suṭiḥat
and the earth, how it has been surfaced?
21
فَذَكِّر إِنَّما أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ
fa-dhakkir ʾinnamā ʾanta mudhakkirun
So admonish—for you are only an admonisher,
22
لَستَ عَلَيهِم بِمُصَيطِرٍ
lasta ʿalayhim bi-muṣayṭirin
and not a taskmaster over them—
23
إِلّا مَن تَوَلّىٰ وَكَفَرَ
ʾillā man tawallā wa-kafara
except him who turns back and disbelieves.
24
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ اللَّهُ العَذابَ الأَكبَرَ
fa-yuʿadhdhibuhu llāhu l-ʿadhāba l-ʾakbara
Him Allah will punish with the greatest punishment.
25
إِنَّ إِلَينا إِيابَهُم
ʾinna ʾilaynā ʾiyābahum
Indeed to Us will be their return.
26
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَينا حِسابَهُم
thumma ʾinna ʿalaynā ḥisābahum
Then, indeed, their reckoning will lie with Us.
