1
ʾidhā s-samāʾu nshaqqat
When the sky is split open
2
wa-ʾadhinat li-rabbihā wa-ḥuqqat
and gives ear to its Lord as it should.
3
wa-ʾidhā l-ʾarḍu muddat
When the earth is spread out
4
wa-ʾalqat mā fīhā wa-takhallat
and throws out what is in it, emptying itself,
5
wa-ʾadhinat li-rabbihā wa-ḥuqqat
and gives ear to its Lord as it should.
6
yā-ʾayyuhā l-ʾinsānu ʾinnaka kādiḥun ʾilā rabbika kadḥan fa-mulāqīhi
O man!You are labouring toward your Lord laboriously, and you will encounter Him.
7
fa-ʾammā man ʾūtiya kitābahū bi-yamīnihī
Then as for him who is given his recordin his right hand,
8
fa-sawfa yuḥāsabu ḥisāban yasīran
he shall soon receive an easy reckoning,
9
wa-yanqalibu ʾilā ʾahlihī masrūran
and he will return to his folks joyfully.
10
wa-ʾammā man ʾūtiya kitābahū warāʾa ẓahrihī
But as for him who is given his recordfrom behind his back,
11
fa-sawfa yadʿū thubūran
he will pray for annihilation,1Cf. 25:13-14, 78:40.
12
wa-yaṣlā saʿīran
and he will enter the Blaze.
13
ʾinnahū kāna fī ʾahlihī masrūran
Indeed he used to be joyful among his folk,
14
ʾinnahū ẓanna ʾan lan yaḥūra
and indeed he thought he would never return.
15
balā ʾinna rabbahū kāna bihī baṣīran
Yes indeed, his Lord sees him best.
16
fa-lā ʾuqsimu bi-sh-shafaqi
So I swear by the evening glow,
17
wa-l-layli wa-mā wasaqa
by the night and what it is fraught with,
18
wa-l-qamari ʾidhā ttasaqa
by the moon when it blooms full:
19
la-tarkabunna ṭabaqan ʿan ṭabaqin
you will surely fare from stage to stage.
20
fa-mā lahum lā yuʾminūna
So what is the matter with themthat they will not believe?
21
wa-ʾidhā quriʾa ʿalayhimu l-qurʾānu lā yasjudūna
And when the Qurʾān is recited to themthey will not prostrate?
22
bali lladhīna kafarū yukadhdhibūna
Rather the faithless deny,
23
wa-llāhu ʾaʿlamu bi-mā yūʿūna
and Allah knows best what they keep to themselves.
24
fa-bashshirhum bi-ʿadhābin ʾalīmin
So warn them of a painful punishment,
25
ʾillā lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti lahum ʾajrun ghayru mamnūnin
except such as are faithfuland do righteous deeds:there will be an everlasting reward for them.
