The surah that opens with a riveting description of The Rending open of the sky at the onset of the Day of Resurrection and assets that every human is being watched by angels and shall stand accountable before God in the Hereafter. It takes its name from “the renting” or “torn apart” (infiṭār) of the sky mentioned in verse 1. The surah deals with man’s ingratitude and his failure to concede that the Day of Judgement will come.The surah is also known as: Bursting Apart, Cleft Asunder, The Cataclysm, The Cleaving Asunder, The Splitting, Torn Apart.

إِذَا السَّماءُ انفَطَرَت
ʾidhā s-samāʾu nfaṭarat
When the sky is rent apart,
2
وَإِذَا الكَواكِبُ انتَثَرَت
wa-ʾidhā l-kawākibu ntatharat
when the stars are scattered,
3
وَإِذَا البِحارُ فُجِّرَت
wa-ʾidhā l-biḥāru fujjirat
when the seas are merged,
4
وَإِذَا القُبورُ بُعثِرَت
wa-ʾidhā l-qubūru buʿthirat
when the graves are overturned,
5
عَلِمَت نَفسٌ ما قَدَّمَت وَأَخَّرَت
ʿalimat nafsun mā qaddamat wa-ʾakhkharat
then a soul shall know what it has sentahead and left behind.
6
يا أَيُّهَا الإِنسانُ ما غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ الكَريمِ
yā-ʾayyuhā l-ʾinsānu mā gharraka bi-rabbika l-karīmi
O man!What has deceived you about your generous1 Lord,Or ‘noble.’
7
الَّذي خَلَقَكَ فَسَوّاكَ فَعَدَلَكَ
alladhī khalaqaka fa-sawwāka fa-ʿadalaka
who created you and proportioned you,and gave you an upright nature,
8
في أَيِّ صورَةٍ ما شاءَ رَكَّبَكَ
fī ʾayyi ṣūratin mā shāʾa rakkabaka
and composed you in any form that He wished?
9
كَلّا بَل تُكَذِّبونَ بِالدّينِ
kallā bal tukadhdhibūna bi-d-dīni
No indeed! Rather you deny the Retribution.
10
وَإِنَّ عَلَيكُم لَحافِظينَ
wa-ʾinna ʿalaykum la-ḥāfiẓīna
Indeed, there are over you watchers,
11
كِرامًا كاتِبينَ
kirāman kātibīna
noble writers
12
يَعلَمونَ ما تَفعَلونَ
yaʿlamūna mā tafʿalūna
who know whatever you do.
13
إِنَّ الأَبرارَ لَفي نَعيمٍ
ʾinna l-ʾabrāra la-fī naʿīmin
Indeed the pious shall be amid bliss,
14
وَإِنَّ الفُجّارَ لَفي جَحيمٍ
wa-ʾinna l-fujjāra la-fī jaḥīmin
and indeed the vicious shall be in hell
15
يَصلَونَها يَومَ الدّينِ
yaṣlawnahā yawma d-dīni
entering it on the Day of Retribution,1Or ‘the Day of Judgement.’
16
وَما هُم عَنها بِغائِبينَ
wa-mā hum ʿanhā bi-ghāʾibīna
and they shall not be absent from it.
17
وَما أَدراكَ ما يَومُ الدّينِ
wa-mā ʾadrāka mā yawmu d-dīni
And what will show youwhat is the Day of Retribution?
18
ثُمَّ ما أَدراكَ ما يَومُ الدّينِ
thumma mā ʾadrāka mā yawmu d-dīni
Again, what will showyou what is the Day of Retribution?
19
يَومَ لا تَملِكُ نَفسٌ لِنَفسٍ شَيئًا ۖ وَالأَمرُ يَومَئِذٍ لِلَّهِ
yawma lā tamliku nafsun li-nafsin shayʾan wa-l-ʾamru yawmaʾidhin li-llāhi
It is a daywhen no soul will be of any avail to another souland all command that day will belong to Allah.
