ʿamma yatasāʾalūna
What is it about which they question each other?!
2
ʿani n-nabaʾi l-ʿaẓīmi
[Is it] about the great tiding,
3
alladhī hum fīhi mukhtalifūna
the one about which they differ?
4
kallā sa-yaʿlamūna
No indeed! They will soon know!
5
thumma kallā sa-yaʿlamūna
Again, no indeed! They will soon know!
6
ʾa-lam najʿali l-ʾarḍa mihādan
Did We not make the earth a resting place?
7
wa-l-jibāla ʾawtādan
and the mountains stakes?
8
wa-khalaqnākum ʾazwājan
and create you in pairs?1Or ‘as sexes.’
9
wa-jaʿalnā nawmakum subātan
and make your sleep for rest?
10
wa-jaʿalnā l-layla libāsan
and make the night a covering?
11
wa-jaʿalnā n-nahāra maʿāshan
and make the day for livelihood?
12
wa-banaynā fawqakum sabʿan shidādan
and build above you the seven mighty heavens?
13
wa-jaʿalnā sirājan wahhājan
and make [the sun for] a radiant lamp?
14
wa-ʾanzalnā mina l-muʿṣirāti māʾan thajjājan
and send down water pouring from the rain-clouds,
15
li-nukhrija bihī ḥabban wa-nabātan
that with it We may bring forth grains and plants,
16
wa-jannātin ʾalfāfan
and luxuriant gardens?
17
ʾinna yawma l-faṣli kāna mīqātan
Indeed the Day of Judgement is the tryst,
18
yawma yunfakhu fī ṣ-ṣūri fa-taʾtūna ʾafwājan
the day the Trumpet will be blown, and you will come in groups,
19
wa-futiḥati s-samāʾu fa-kānat ʾabwāban
and the sky will be openedand become gates,
20
wa-suyyirati l-jibālu fa-kānat sarāban
and the mountains will be set movingand become a mirage.

22
li-ṭ-ṭāghīna maʾāban
a resort for the rebels,
23
lābithīna fīhā ʾaḥqāban
to reside therein for ages,
24
lā yadhūqūna fīhā bardan wa-lā sharāban
tasting in it neither any coolness nor drink,
25
ʾillā hamīman wa-ghassāqan
except boiling water and pus
26
jazāʾan wifāqan
—a fitting requital.
27
ʾinnahum kānū lā yarjūna ḥisāban
Indeed they did not expect any reckoning,
28
wa-kadhdhabū bi-ʾāyātinā kidhdhāban
and they denied Our signs mendaciously,
29
wa-kulla shayʾin ʾaḥṣaynāhu kitāban
and We have figured everything in a Book.
30
fa-dhūqū fa-lan nazīdakum ʾillā ʿadhāban
So [now] taste! We shall increase you in nothing but punishment!
31
ʾinna li-l-muttaqīna mafāzan
Indeed a triumph awaits the Godwary:
32
ḥadāʾiqa wa-ʾaʿnāban
gardens and vineyards,
33
wa-kawāʿiba ʾatrāban
and buxom maidens of a like age,
34
wa-kaʾsan dihāqan
and brimming cups.
35
lā yasmaʿūna fīhā laghwan wa-lā kidhdhāban
Therein they shall hear neither vain talk nor lies
36

—a reward from your Lord,a bounty sufficing,1Or ‘abounding,’ or ‘well-deserved,’ or ‘well-earned.’
37
rabbi s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi wa-mā baynahumā r-raḥmāni lā yamlikūna minhu khiṭāban

38
yawma yaqūmu r-rūḥu wa-l-malāʾikatu ṣaffan lā yatakallamūna ʾillā man ʾadhina lahu r-raḥmānu wa-qāla ṣawāban
on the daywhen the Spirit and the angels standin an array.None shall speakexcept whom the All-beneficent permitsand who says what is right.
39
dhālika l-yawmu l-ḥaqqu fa-man shāʾa ttakhadha ʾilā rabbihī maʾāban
That is the day of truth. So let anyone who wishes take resort with his Lord.
40
ʾinnā ʾandharnākum ʿadhāban qarīban yawma yanẓuru l-marʾu mā qaddamat yadāhu wa-yaqūlu l-kāfiru yā-laytanī kuntu turāban
