AL-MURSALĀT
THE EMISSARIES
meccan 50 Verses
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
The surah that opens with the oath of the Divine One swearing by the Emissaries as those sent forth in succession. It takes its name from the “emissaries” (mursalāt) mentioned in verse 1. The surah describes the Day of Decision: its inevitability, arguments for its coming, and the events that will presage the Judgement, as well as the fates of believers and disbelievers.The surah is also known as: (Winds) Sent Forth, The Loosed Ones, Those Sent Forth, Those Sent Forth in Succession, Those That Are Sent Forth.

وَالمُرسَلاتِ عُرفًا

wa-l-mursalāti ʿurfan

By the successive emissaries,
2
فَالعاصِفاتِ عَصفًا

fa-l-ʿāṣifāti ʿaṣfan

by the raging hurricanes,
3
وَالنّاشِراتِ نَشرًا

wa-n-nāshirāti nashran

by the sweeping spreaders,
4
فَالفارِقاتِ فَرقًا

fa-l-fāriqāti farqan

by the decisive separators,
5
فَالمُلقِياتِ ذِكرًا

fa-l-mulqiyāti dhikran

by the inspirers of remembrance,
6
عُذرًا أَو نُذرًا

ʿudhran ʾaw nudhran

to excuse or to warn:
7
إِنَّما توعَدونَ لَواقِعٌ

ʾinnamā tūʿadūna la-wāqiʿun

indeed what you are promised will surely befall.
8
فَإِذَا النُّجومُ طُمِسَت

fa-ʾidhā n-nujūmu ṭumisat

So when the stars are blotted out,
9
وَإِذَا السَّماءُ فُرِجَت

wa-ʾidhā s-samāʾu furijat

and when the sky is split,
10
وَإِذَا الجِبالُ نُسِفَت

wa-ʾidhā l-jibālu nusifat

and when the mountains are scattered1 [like dust],Or ‘blown away.’
11
وَإِذَا الرُّسُلُ أُقِّتَت

wa-ʾidhā r-rusulu ʾuqqitat

and when the time is set for the apostles [to witness]
12
لِأَيِّ يَومٍ أُجِّلَت

li-ʾayyi yawmin ʾujjilat

—for what day has [all] that been set [to occur]?
13
لِيَومِ الفَصلِ

li-yawmi l-faṣli

For the Day of Judgement!
14
وَما أَدراكَ ما يَومُ الفَصلِ

wa-mā ʾadrāka mā yawmu l-faṣli

And what will show you what is the Day of Judgement!
15
وَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ

waylun yawmaʾidhin li-l-mukadhdhibīna

Woe to the deniers on that day!
16
أَلَم نُهلِكِ الأَوَّلينَ

ʾa-lam nuhliki l-ʾawwalīna

Did We not destroy the ancients,
17
ثُمَّ نُتبِعُهُمُ الآخِرينَ

thumma nutbiʿuhumu l-ʾākhirīna

[and] then made the latter ones follow them?
18
كَذٰلِكَ نَفعَلُ بِالمُجرِمينَ

ka-dhālika nafʿalu bi-l-mujrimīna

That is how We deal with the guilty.
19
وَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ

waylun yawmaʾidhin li-l-mukadhdhibīna

Woe to the deniers on that day!
20
أَلَم نَخلُقكُم مِن ماءٍ مَهينٍ

ʾa-lam nakhluqkum min māʾin mahīnin

Have We not created you from a base fluid,
21
فَجَعَلناهُ في قَرارٍ مَكينٍ

fa-jaʿalnāhu fī qarārin makīnin

[and] then lodged it in a secure abode
22
إِلىٰ قَدَرٍ مَعلومٍ

ʾilā qadarin maʿlūmin

until a known span [of time]?
23
فَقَدَرنا فَنِعمَ القادِرونَ

fa-qadarnā fa-niʿma l-qādirūna

Then We designed;so how excellent designers We are!
24
وَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ

waylun yawmaʾidhin li-l-mukadhdhibīna

Woe to the deniers on that day!
25
أَلَم نَجعَلِ الأَرضَ كِفاتًا

ʾa-lam najʿali l-ʾarḍa kifātan

Have We not made the earth a receptacle
26
أَحياءً وَأَمواتًا

ʾaḥyāʾan wa-ʾamwātan

for the living and the dead,
27
وَجَعَلنا فيها رَواسِيَ شامِخاتٍ وَأَسقَيناكُم ماءً فُراتًا

wa-jaʿalnā fīhā rawāsiya shāmikhātin wa-ʾasqaynākum māʾan furātan

and set in it lofty [and] firm mountains,and given you agreeable water to drink?
28
وَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ

waylun yawmaʾidhin li-l-mukadhdhibīna

Woe to the deniers on that day!
29
انطَلِقوا إِلىٰ ما كُنتُم بِهِ تُكَذِّبونَ

inṭaliqū ʾilā mā kuntum bihī tukadhdhibūna

[They will be told]:‘Get off toward what you used to deny!
30
انطَلِقوا إِلىٰ ظِلٍّ ذي ثَلاثِ شُعَبٍ

inṭaliqū ʾilā ẓillin dhī thalāthi shuʿabin

Get off toward the triple-forked shadow,
31
لا ظَليلٍ وَلا يُغني مِنَ اللَّهَبِ

lā ẓalīlin wa-lā yughnī mina l-lahabi

which is neither shadynor is of any avail against the flame.
32
إِنَّها تَرمي بِشَرَرٍ كَالقَصرِ

ʾinnahā tarmī bi-shararin ka-l-qaṣri

Indeed it throws up sparks [huge] like palaces,1Or ‘like castles,’ or ‘like the trunks (of huge trees).’
33
كَأَنَّهُ جِمالَتٌ صُفرٌ

ka-ʾannahū jimālatun ṣufrun

[bright] as if they were yellow camels.
34
وَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ

waylun yawmaʾidhin li-l-mukadhdhibīna

Woe to the deniers on that day!
35
هٰذا يَومُ لا يَنطِقونَ

hādhā yawmu lā yanṭiqūna

This is a day wherein they will not speak,
36
وَلا يُؤذَنُ لَهُم فَيَعتَذِرونَ

wa-lā yuʾdhanu lahum fa-yaʿtadhirūna

nor will they be permitted to offer excuses.
37
وَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ

waylun yawmaʾidhin li-l-mukadhdhibīna

Woe to the deniers on that day!
38
هٰذا يَومُ الفَصلِ ۖ جَمَعناكُم وَالأَوَّلينَ

hādhā yawmu l-faṣli jamaʿnākum wa-l-ʾawwalīna

‘This is the Day of Judgement.We have brought together you and the ancients.
39
فَإِن كانَ لَكُم كَيدٌ فَكيدونِ

fa-ʾin kāna lakum kaydun fa-kīdūni

If you have any stratagems [left],try out your stratagems against Me!’
40
وَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ

waylun yawmaʾidhin li-l-mukadhdhibīna

Woe to the deniers on that day!
41
إِنَّ المُتَّقينَ في ظِلالٍ وَعُيونٍ

ʾinna l-muttaqīna fī ẓilālin wa-ʿuyūnin

Indeed the Godwary will be amid shades and springs,
42
وَفَواكِهَ مِمّا يَشتَهونَ

wa-fawākiha mimmā yashtahūna

and fruits, such as they desire.
43
كُلوا وَاشرَبوا هَنيئًا بِما كُنتُم تَعمَلونَ

kulū wa-shrabū hanīʾan bi-mā kuntum taʿmalūna

[They will be told:] ‘Enjoy your food and drink,[as a reward] for what you used to do.’
44
إِنّا كَذٰلِكَ نَجزِي المُحسِنينَ

ʾinnā ka-dhālika najzī l-muḥsinīna

Thus indeed do We reward the virtuous.
45
وَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ

waylun yawmaʾidhin li-l-mukadhdhibīna

Woe to the deniers on that day!
46
كُلوا وَتَمَتَّعوا قَليلًا إِنَّكُم مُجرِمونَ

kulū wa-tamattaʿū qalīlan ʾinnakum mujrimūna

‘Eat and enjoy a little!You are indeed guilty.’
47
وَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ

waylun yawmaʾidhin li-l-mukadhdhibīna

Woe to the deniers on that day!
48
وَإِذا قيلَ لَهُمُ اركَعوا لا يَركَعونَ

wa-ʾidhā qīla lahumu rkaʿū lā yarkaʿūna

When they are told, ‘Bow down,’they do not bow down!
49
وَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ

waylun yawmaʾidhin li-l-mukadhdhibīna

Woe to the deniers on that day!
50
فَبِأَيِّ حَديثٍ بَعدَهُ يُؤمِنونَ

fa-bi-ʾayyi ḥadīthin baʿdahū yuʾminūna

So what discourse will they believe after this?
