بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
That surah that opens with the story of the ancient Prophet Noah, the unrelenting Messenger of Resolve, and his obstinately unbelieving people. It is named after Noah (Nūḥ) whose account is related in the surah and further gives details of the life of Noah before the Flood, to encourage the Prophet and warn the disbelievers.

إِنّا أَرسَلنا نوحًا إِلىٰ قَومِهِ أَن أَنذِر قَومَكَ مِن قَبلِ أَن يَأتِيَهُم عَذابٌ أَليمٌ

ʾinnā ʾarsalnā nūḥan ʾilā qawmihī ʾan ʾandhir qawmaka min qabli ʾan yaʾtiyahum ʿadhābun ʾalīmun

Indeed We sent Noah to his people,[saying,] ‘Warn your peoplebefore a painful punishment overtakes them.’

قالَ يا قَومِ إِنّي لَكُم نَذيرٌ مُبينٌ

qāla yā-qawmi ʾinnī lakum nadhīrun mubīnun

He said, ‘O my people!Indeed I am a manifest warner to you.

أَنِ اعبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاتَّقوهُ وَأَطيعونِ

ʾani ʿbudū llāha wa-ttaqūhu wa-ʾaṭīʿūni

Worship Allah and be wary of Him,and obey me,
4
يَغفِر لَكُم مِن ذُنوبِكُم وَيُؤَخِّركُم إِلىٰ أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ أَجَلَ اللَّهِ إِذا جاءَ لا يُؤَخَّرُ ۖ لَو كُنتُم تَعلَمونَ

yaghfir lakum min dhunūbikum wa-yuʾakhkhirkum ʾilā ʾajalin musamman ʾinna ʾajala llāhi ʾidhā jāʾa lā yuʾakhkharu law kuntum taʿlamūna

that He may forgive you some of your sinsand respite you until a specified time.Indeed when Allah’s [appointed] time comes,it cannot be deferred,should you know.’

قالَ رَبِّ إِنّي دَعَوتُ قَومي لَيلًا وَنَهارًا

qāla rabbi ʾinnī daʿawtu qawmī laylan wa-nahāran

He said, ‘My Lord!Indeed I have summoned my people night and day
6
فَلَم يَزِدهُم دُعائي إِلّا فِرارًا

fa-lam yazidhum duʿāʾī ʾillā firāran

but my summons only increases their evasion.
7
وَإِنّي كُلَّما دَعَوتُهُم لِتَغفِرَ لَهُم جَعَلوا أَصابِعَهُم في آذانِهِم وَاستَغشَوا ثِيابَهُم وَأَصَرّوا وَاستَكبَرُوا استِكبارًا

wa-ʾinnī kullamā daʿawtuhum li-taghfira lahum jaʿalū ʾaṣābiʿahum fī ʾādhānihim wa-staghshaw thiyābahum wa-ʾaṣarrū wa-stakbarū stikbāran

Indeed whenever I have summoned them,so that You might forgive them,they would put their fingers into their earsand draw their cloaks over their heads,and they were persistent [in their unfaith],and disdainful in [their] arrogance.

ثُمَّ إِنّي دَعَوتُهُم جِهارًا

thumma ʾinnī daʿawtuhum jihāran

Again I summoned them aloud,
9
ثُمَّ إِنّي أَعلَنتُ لَهُم وَأَسرَرتُ لَهُم إِسرارًا

thumma ʾinnī ʾaʿlantu lahum wa-ʾasrartu lahum ʾisrāran

and again appealed to them publiclyand confided with them privately,
10
فَقُلتُ استَغفِروا رَبَّكُم إِنَّهُ كانَ غَفّارًا

fa-qultu staghfirū rabbakum ʾinnahū kāna ghaffāran

telling [them]: “Plead to your Lord for forgiveness.Indeed He is all-forgiver.
11
يُرسِلِ السَّماءَ عَلَيكُم مِدرارًا

yursili s-samāʾa ʿalaykum midrāran

He will send for you abundant rains from the sky,
12
وَيُمدِدكُم بِأَموالٍ وَبَنينَ وَيَجعَل لَكُم جَنّاتٍ وَيَجعَل لَكُم أَنهارًا

wa-yumdidkum bi-ʾamwālin wa-banīna wa-yajʿal lakum jannātin wa-yajʿal lakum ʾanhāran

and aid you with wealth and sons,and provide you with gardensand provide you with streams.
13
ما لَكُم لا تَرجونَ لِلَّهِ وَقارًا

mā lakum lā tarjūna li-llāhi waqāran

What is the matter with youthat you do not look upon Allah with veneration,
14
وَقَد خَلَقَكُم أَطوارًا

wa-qad khalaqakum ʾaṭwāran

though He has created you in [various] stages?
15
أَلَم تَرَوا كَيفَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ سَبعَ سَماواتٍ طِباقًا

ʾa-lam taraw kayfa khalaqa llāhu sabʿa samāwātin ṭibāqan

Have you not seen how Allah has createdseven heavens in layers,
16
وَجَعَلَ القَمَرَ فيهِنَّ نورًا وَجَعَلَ الشَّمسَ سِراجًا

wa-jaʿala l-qamara fīhinna nūran wa-jaʿala sh-shamsa sirājan

and has made therein the moon for a light,and the sun for a lamp?
17
وَاللَّهُ أَنبَتَكُم مِنَ الأَرضِ نَباتًا

wa-llāhu ʾanbatakum mina l-ʾarḍi nabātan

Allah made you grow from the earth,with a [vegetable] growth.
18
ثُمَّ يُعيدُكُم فيها وَيُخرِجُكُم إِخراجًا

thumma yuʿīdukum fīhā wa-yukhrijukum ʾikhrājan

Then He makes you return to it,and He will bring you forth [without fail].
19
وَاللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الأَرضَ بِساطًا

wa-llāhu jaʿala lakumu l-ʾarḍa bisāṭan

Allah has made the earth a vast expanse for you
20
لِتَسلُكوا مِنها سُبُلًا فِجاجًا

li-taslukū minhā subulan fijājan

so that you may travel over its spacious ways.” ’
21
قالَ نوحٌ رَبِّ إِنَّهُم عَصَوني وَاتَّبَعوا مَن لَم يَزِدهُ مالُهُ وَوَلَدُهُ إِلّا خَسارًا

qāla nūḥun rabbi ʾinnahum ʿaṣawnī wa-ttabaʿū man lam yazidhu māluhū wa-waladuhū ʾillā khasāran

Noah said, ‘My Lord!They have disobeyed me,following someonewhose wealth and children only add to his loss,
22
وَمَكَروا مَكرًا كُبّارًا

wa-makarū makran kubbāran

and they have devised an outrageous plot.
23
وَقالوا لا تَذَرُنَّ آلِهَتَكُم وَلا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّا وَلا سُواعًا وَلا يَغوثَ وَيَعوقَ وَنَسرًا

wa-qālū lā tadharunna ʾālihatakum wa-lā tadharunna waddan wa-lā suwāʿan wa-lā yaghūtha wa-yaʿūqa wa-nasran

They say, “Do not abandon your gods.Do not abandon Wadd, nor Suwā,nor Yaghūth, Yaʿūq and Nasr,”1Names of Babylonian gods worshipped by the polytheists.
24
وَقَد أَضَلّوا كَثيرًا ۖ وَلا تَزِدِ الظّالِمينَ إِلّا ضَلالًا

wa-qad ʾaḍallū kathīran wa-lā tazidi ẓ-ẓālimīna ʾillā ḍalālan

and already they have led many astray.Do not increase the wrongdoers in anything but error.’
25
مِمّا خَطيئَاتِهِم أُغرِقوا فَأُدخِلوا نارًا فَلَم يَجِدوا لَهُم مِن دونِ اللَّهِ أَنصارًا

mimmā khaṭīʾātihim ʾughriqū fa-ʾudkhilū nāran fa-lam yajidū lahum min dūni llāhi ʾanṣāran

They were drowned because of their iniquities,then made to enter a Fire,and they did not find for themselvesany helpers besides Allah.
26
وَقالَ نوحٌ رَبِّ لا تَذَر عَلَى الأَرضِ مِنَ الكافِرينَ دَيّارًا

wa-qāla nūḥun rabbi lā tadhar ʿalā l-ʾarḍi mina l-kāfirīna dayyāran

And Noah said, ‘My Lord!‘Do not leave on the earthany inhabitant from among the faithless.
27
إِنَّكَ إِن تَذَرهُم يُضِلّوا عِبادَكَ وَلا يَلِدوا إِلّا فاجِرًا كَفّارًا

ʾinnaka ʾin tadharhum yuḍillū ʿibādaka wa-lā yalidū ʾillā fājiran kaffāran

If You leave them, they will lead astray Your servantsand will not beget except vicious ingrates.
28
رَبِّ اغفِر لي وَلِوالِدَيَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيتِيَ مُؤمِنًا وَلِلمُؤمِنينَ وَالمُؤمِناتِ وَلا تَزِدِ الظّالِمينَ إِلّا تَبارًا

rabbi ghfir lī wa-li-wālidayya wa-li-man dakhala baytiya muʾminan wa-li-l-muʾminīna wa-l-muʾmināti wa-lā tazidi ẓ-ẓālimīna ʾillā tabāran

My Lord! Forgive me and my parents,and whoever enters my house in faith,and the faithful men and women,and do not increase the wrongdoers in anythingexcept ruin.’
