The surah that opens by proclaiming one of the names of the Day of Resurrection, The Inevitable reality or hour, so named because in the matter of truth shall forever be decided then and all truth shall prevail regarding every aair. It takes its name from the Inevitable or Besieger (al-Ḥāqqah) mentioned in verse 1. The surah describes punishment in this life (verse 4 .) and the next (verse 13 .). The bliss to be enjoyed by the believers is eloquently contrasted with the torments of hell (verse 19 .). From verse 38 onwards, God airms the Truth of the Quran and the Prophet. The surah is also known as: Reality, The Catastrophe, The Concrete Reality, The Indubitable, The Inevitable Hour, The Inevitable Reality, The Sure Occurrence, The Sure Reality, The Undeniable.

wa-mā ʾadrāka mā l-ḥāqqatu
What will show you what is the Besieger?!

kadhdhabat thamūdu wa-ʿādun bi-l-qāriʿati
Thamūd and ʿĀd denied the Catastrophe.

As for Thamūd, they were destroyed by the Cry.
6

wa-ʾammā ʿādun fa-ʾuhlikū bi-rīḥin ṣarṣarin ʿātiyatin
And as for ʿĀd,they were destroyed by a fierce icy gale,
7
sakhkharahā ʿalayhim sabʿa layālin wa-thamāniyata ʾayyāmin ḥusūman fa-tarā l-qawma fīhā ṣarʿā ka-ʾannahum ʾaʿjāzu nakhlin khāwiyatin
which He disposed against themfor seven grueling1 nights and eight days,so that you could have seen the peoplelying about therein prostrateas if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.Or ‘successive.’

10
fa-ʿaṣaw rasūla rabbihim fa-ʾakhadhahum ʾakhdhatan rābiyatan
Then they disobeyed the apostle of their Lord,so He seized them with a terrible seizing.
11
ʾinnā lammā ṭaghā l-māʾu ḥamalnākum fī l-jāriyati
Indeed when the Flood rose high,We carried you in a floating ark,
12
li-najʿalahā lakum tadhkiratan wa-taʿiyahā ʾudhunun wāʿiyatun
that We might make it a reminder for you,and that receptive ears might remember it.
13
fa-ʾidhā nufikha fī ṣ-ṣūri nafkhatun wāḥidatun
When the Trumpet is blown with a single blast
14
wa-ḥumilati l-ʾarḍu wa-l-jibālu fa-dukkatā dakkatan wāḥidatan
and the earth and the mountains are liftedand levelled with a single leveling,1Or ‘crumbled with a single crumbling.’
15

then, on that day, will the Imminent [Hour] befall1Cf. 56:1-6.
16
wa-nshaqqati s-samāʾu fa-hiya yawmaʾidhin wāhiyatun
and the sky will be split open—for it will be frail that day—
17
wa-l-malaku ʿalā ʾarjāʾihā wa-yaḥmilu ʿarsha rabbika fawqahum yawmaʾidhin thamāniyatun
and the angels will be all over it,and the Throne of your Lord will be bornethat day by eight [angels].
18

19
fa-ʾammā man ʾūtiya kitābahū bi-yamīnihī fa-yaqūlu hāʾumu qraʾū kitābiyah
As for him who is given his book in his right hand,he will say, ‘Here, take and read my book!
20
ʾinnī ẓanantu ʾannī mulāqin ḥisābiyah
Indeed I knew that I shall encounter my account.’
21
fa-huwa fī ʿīshatin rāḍiyatin
So he will have a pleasant life,
22
fī jannatin ʿāliyatin
in an elevated garden,
23
quṭūfuhā dāniyatun
whose clusters [of fruits] will be within easy reach.
24
kulū wa-shrabū hanīʾan bi-mā ʾaslaftum fī l-ʾayyāmi l-khāliyati
[He will be told]: ‘Enjoy your food and drink, for what you had sent in advance in past days.’
25
wa-ʾammā man ʾūtiya kitābahū bi-shimālihī fa-yaqūlu yā-laytanī lam ʾūta kitābiyah
But as for him who is given his book in his left hand,he will say, ‘I wish I had not been given my book,
26
wa-lam ʾadri mā ḥisābiyah
nor had I ever known what my account is!
27
yā-laytahā kānati l-qāḍiyata
I wish death had been the end of it all!
28
mā ʾaghnā ʿannī māliyah
My wealth did not avail me.
29
halaka ʿannī sulṭāniyah
My authority has departed from me.’
30
khudhūhu fa-ghullūhu
[The angels will be told:] ‘Seize him, and fetter him!
31
thumma l-jaḥīma ṣallūhu
Then put him into hell.
32
thumma fī silsilatin dharʿuhā sabʿūna dhirāʿan fa-slukūhu
Then, in a chain whose length is seventy cubits, bind him.
33
ʾinnahū kāna lā yuʾminu bi-llāhi l-ʿaẓīmi
Indeed he had no faith in Allah, the All-supreme,
34
wa-lā yaḥuḍḍu ʿalā ṭaʿāmi l-miskīni
and he did not urge the feeding of the needy,
35
fa-laysa lahu l-yawma hāhunā ḥamīmun
so he has no friend here today,
36
wa-lā ṭaʿāmun ʾillā min ghislīnin
nor any food except pus,
37
lā yaʾkuluhū ʾillā l-khāṭiʾūna
which no one shall eat except the iniquitous.’
38
fa-lā ʾuqsimu bi-mā tubṣirūna
I swear by what you see
39
wa-mā lā tubṣirūna
and what you do not see:
40
ʾinnahū la-qawlu rasūlin karīmin
it is indeed the speech of a noble apostle,
41
wa-mā huwa bi-qawli shāʿirin qalīlan mā tuʾminūna
and it is not the speech of a poet.Little is the faith that you have!
42
wa-lā bi-qawli kāhinin qalīlan mā tadhakkarūna
Nor is it the speech of a soothsayer.Little is the admonition that you take!
43
tanzīlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīna
Gradually sent down from the Lord of all the worlds.
44
wa-law taqawwala ʿalaynā baʿḍa l-ʾaqāwīli
Had he faked any sayings in Our name,
45
la-ʾakhadhnā minhu bi-l-yamīni
We would have surely seized him by the right hand
46
thumma la-qaṭaʿnā minhu l-watīna
and then cut off his aorta,
47
fa-mā minkum min ʾaḥadin ʿanhu ḥājizīna
and none of you could have held Us off from him.
48
wa-ʾinnahū la-tadhkiratun li-l-muttaqīna
Indeed it is a reminder for the Godwary.
49
wa-ʾinnā la-naʿlamu ʾanna minkum mukadhdhibīna
Indeed We knowthat there are some among you who deny [it].
50
wa-ʾinnahū la-ḥasratun ʿalā l-kāfirīna
And indeed it will be a [matter of] regretfor the faithless.
51
wa-ʾinnahū la-ḥaqqu l-yaqīni
It is indeed certain truth.
52
fa-sabbiḥ bi-smi rabbika l-ʿaẓīmi
So celebrate the Name of your Lord, the All-supreme.
