The surah that mentions the heavy metallic element Iron as being sent down by God form the heavens to endow the earth itself with mighty force, and humanity with the many benefits of its malleable and structural strength, and all the great tests of faith that arise from this. It takes its name from verse 25, which mentions iron (ḥadīd). The surah urges the believers to spend in God’s cause and uphold justice. The all pervasiveness of God’s power, knowledge, control, and glory is airmed to encourage the believers to right action, and the fate of the hypocrites is described. Previous prophets are mentioned (verse 26 .), especially Noah, Abraham, and Jesus, showing the response they received. The surah closes with a reference to the People of the Book.
1
sabbaḥa li-llāhi mā fī s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi wa-huwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīmu

4

It is He who created the heavens and the earthin six days;then settled on the Throne. He knows whatever enters the earthand whatever emerges from itand whatever descends from the skyand whatever ascends to it,and He is with you wherever you may be,and Allah sees best what you do.
5

yūliju l-layla fī n-nahāri wa-yūliju n-nahāra fī l-layli wa-huwa ʿalīmun bi-dhāti ṣ-ṣudūri
He makes the night pass into the dayand makes the day pass into the night, and He knows best what is in the breasts.
7

Have faith in Allah and His Apostle, and spend out of thatwherein He has made you successors.1Those of you who have faithand spend [in Allah’s way]—there is a great reward for them. That is, of the past generations.
8
wa-mā lakum lā tuʾminūna bi-llāhi wa-r-rasūlu yadʿūkum li-tuʾminū bi-rabbikum wa-qad ʾakhadha mīthāqakum ʾin kuntum muʾminīna
Why should you not have faith in Allahwhile the Apostle invites youto have faith in your Lord, and He has certainly made a covenant with you, should you be faithful?
9

It is He who sends downmanifest signs to His servantthat He may bring you out of darkness into light, and indeed Allah is most kind and merciful to you.
10

Why should you not spend in the way of Allah, while to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavensand the earth? Not equal [to others] are those of youwho spent and fought before the victory.1They are greater in rankthan those who have spent and fought afterwards.Yet Allah has promised the best reward to eachand Allah is well aware of what you do.That is, the Prophet’s triumphant return to Makkah.
11
man dhā lladhī yuqriḍu llāha qarḍan ḥasanan fa-yuḍāʿifahū lahū wa-lahū ʾajrun karīmun
Who is it that will lend Allah a good loan, that He may multiply it for himand [that] there may be a noble reward for him?
12
yawma tarā l-muʾminīna wa-l-muʾmināti yasʿā nūruhum bayna ʾaydīhim wa-bi-ʾaymānihim bushrākumu l-yawma jannātun tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru khālidīna fīhā dhālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu
The day you will see the faithful, men and women, with their light moving swiftly before themand on their right, [and greeted with the words:]‘There is good news for you today!Gardens with streams running in them,to remain in them [forever].That is the great success.’
13
yawma yaqūlu l-munāfiqūna wa-l-munāfiqātu li-lladhīna ʾāmanū nẓurūnā naqtabis min nūrikum qīla rjiʿū warāʾakum fa-ltamisū nūran fa-ḍuriba baynahum bi-sūrin lahū bābun bāṭinuhū fīhi r-raḥmatu wa-ẓāhiruhū min qibalihi l-ʿadhābu
The day the hypocrites, men and women, will sayto the faithful,‘Please let up on us,that we may glean something from your light!’They will be told: ‘Go back and grope for light!’1Then there will be set up between them a wallwith a gate, with mercy on its interiorand punishment toward its exterior. That is, go back into the world. Said mockingly to the hypocrites. Cf. 2:15, 11:38.
14

They will call out to them,‘Did we not use to be with you?’They will say, ‘Yes!But you cast yourselves into temptation, and you awaited1 and were doubtful, and [false] hopes deceived youuntil the edict of Allah2 arrived, and the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah. That is, waited for a reverse of fortune for Muslims. See 4:141, 9:50-52, 98, 23:25, 52:30-31.That is, death.
15
fa-l-yawma lā yuʾkhadhu minkum fidyatun wa-lā mina lladhīna kafarū maʾwākumu n-nāru hiya mawlākum wa-biʾsa l-maṣīru
So today no ransom shall be taken from you,nor from the faithless. The Fire will be your abode:it is your [ultimate] refugeand an evil destination.’
16

Is it not time yet for those who have faiththat their hearts should be humbledfor Allah’s remembranceand to the truth which has come down [to them],and to be not like those who were given the Bookbefore?1Time took its toll on themand so their hearts were hardened, and many of them are transgressors. That is, the Jews.
17
iʿlamū ʾanna llāha yuḥyi l-ʾarḍa baʿda mawtihā qad bayyannā lakumu l-ʾāyāti laʿallakum taʿqilūna
Know that Allah revives the earthafter its death. We have certainly made the signs clear for youso that you may apply reason.
18

Indeed the charitable men and charitable women, and those who lend Allah a good loan—it shall be multiplied for them, and there is a noble reward for them.
19

Those who have faith in Allah and His apostles—it is they who are the truthfuland the witnesses1 with their Lord;they shall have their reward and their light. But as for those who are faithless and deny Our signs, they shall be the inmates of hell.Or ‘martyrs.’
20

Know that the life of this world is justplay and diversion, and glitter, and mutual vainglory among youand covetousness1 for wealth and children—like the rainwhose vegetation impresses the farmer;then it withers and you see it turn yellow, then it becomes chaff, while in the Hereafter there is a severe punishmentand forgiveness from Allah and His pleasure;and the life of this world is nothingbut the wares of delusion.Or ‘rivalry.’
21

Take the lead towards forgiveness from your Lordand a paradise as vast as the heavensand the earth, prepared for those who have faith in Allahand His apostles. That is Allah’s grace, which He grants to whomever He wishes, and Allah is dispenser of a great grace.
22

No affliction visits the earthor yourselvesbut it is in a Book before We bring it about—that is indeed easy for Allah—
23
li-kay-lā taʾsaw ʿalā mā fātakum wa-lā tafraḥū bi-mā ʾātākum wa-llāhu lā yuḥibbu kulla mukhtālin fakhūrin-i
so that you may not grieve for what escapes you,nor exult for what comes your way,and Allah does not like any swaggering braggart.
24

alladhīna yabkhalūna wa-yaʾmurūna n-nāsa bi-l-bukhli wa-man yatawalla fa-ʾinna llāha huwa l-ghaniyyu l-ḥamīdu
Such as are [themselves] stingyand bid [other] people to be stingy. And whoever refuses to comply [should know that]indeed Allah is the All-sufficient, the All-laudable.
25

Certainly We sent Our apostles with manifest proofs, and We sent down with them the Bookand the Balance,so that mankind may maintain justice;and We sent down1 iron,in which there is great mightand uses for mankind, and so that Allah may know those who help Himand His apostles in [their] absence.Indeed Allah is all-strong, all-mighty.That is, created.
26

Certainly We sent Noah and Abrahamand We ordained among their descendantsprophethood and the Book. Some of them are [rightly] guided, and many of them are transgressors.
27

Then We followed them up with Our apostlesand We followed [them] with Jesus son of Mary, and We gave him the Evangel, and We put in the hearts of those who followed himkindness and mercy. But as for monasticism, they innovated it—We had not prescribed it for them—only seeking Allah’s pleasure.Yet they did not observe it with due observance. So We gave to the faithful among themtheir [due] reward, but many of them are transgressors.
28

O you who have faith!Be wary of Allahand have faith in His Apostle.He will grant you a double share of His mercyand give you a light to walk by,and forgive you,and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful;
29

so that the People of the Book may knowthat they have no power over anythingof Allah’s grace, and that all grace is in Allah’s handwhich He grants to whomever He wishesand Allah is dispenser of a great grace.
