Surah 48
AL-FATḤ
VICTORY
medinan 29 Verses
The surah that opens by acclaiming the manifest Victory or Triumph of peace that God accorded His Prophet in the truce he agreed to with the Meccans at a place called Ḥudaybiyyah. It takes its name from verse 1 wherein “victory” (fatḥ) is mentioned. The surah makes reference to the occasion when the Prophet had a vision that he and his followers would be performing pilgrimage to Mecca (verse 27). They set out, but the Meccans decided to bar them at Ḥudaybiyyah from reaching the town and sent emissaries to have discussions with the Prophet. In the end the Prophet signed a treaty that he and the believers would not enter Mecca that year, but would do so the next year. Seeing the long-term significance of this treaty, in the interests of peace he agreed to a truce often years during which time, if any Meccan went over to his side, he would return him to the Meccans, but if any of his people went over to the Meccans, they would not return them. Throughout the surah the Prophet is assured that this treaty that God has given him is a great breakthrough (verse 1., verse 18 . and verse 27). The believers are reassured that their self-restraint and obedience to the Prophet were inspired by God (verse 4 . and verse 24 .). The surah condemns both the hypocrites in Medina (verse 6) and the idolaters of Mecca (verse 6 and verse 26) and closes by praising the believers (verse 29).The surah is also known as: Conquest, The Manifest Triumph, Triumph.

huwa lladhī ʾanzala s-sakīnata fī qulūbi l-muʾminīna li-yazdādū ʾīmānan maʿa ʾīmānihim wa-li-llāhi junūdu s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi wa-kāna llāhu ʿalīman ḥakīman

li-yudkhila l-muʾminīna wa-l-muʾmināti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru khālidīna fīhā wa-yukaffira ʿanhum sayyiʾātihim wa-kāna dhālika ʿinda llāhi fawzan ʿaẓīman

6

wa-yuʿadhdhiba l-munāfiqīna wa-l-munāfiqāti wa-l-mushrikīna wa-l-mushrikāti ẓ-ẓānnīna bi-llāhi ẓanna s-sawʾi ʿalayhim dāʾiratu s-sawʾi wa-ghaḍiba llāhu ʿalayhim wa-laʿanahum wa-ʾaʿadda lahum jahannama wa-sāʾat maṣīran

That He may punish the hypocrites, men and women, and the polytheists, men and women, who entertain a bad opinion of Allah. For them shall be an adverse turn of fortune:Allah is wrathful with themand He has cursed them, and prepared for them hell, and it is an evil destination.

10

ʾinna lladhīna yubāyiʿūnaka ʾinnamā yubāyiʿūna llāha yadu llāhi fawqa ʾaydīhim fa-man nakatha fa-ʾinnamā yankuthu ʿalā nafsihī wa-man ʾawfā bi-mā ʿāhada ʿalayhu llāha fa-sa-yuʾtīhi ʾajran ʿaẓīman

sa-yaqūlu laka l-mukhallafūna mina l-ʾaʿrābi shaghalatnā ʾamwālunā wa-ʾahlūnā fa-staghfir lanā yaqūlūna bi-ʾalsinatihim mā laysa fī qulūbihim qul fa-man yamliku lakum mina llāhi shayʾan ʾin ʾarāda bikum ḍarran ʾaw ʾarāda bikum nafʿan bal kāna llāhu bi-mā taʿmalūna khabīran

The Bedouins who were left behind will tell you,‘Our possessions and our families kept us occupied. So plead [to Allah] for our forgiveness!’They say with their tongueswhat is not in their hearts.Say, ‘Who can be of any avail to you against Allah, should He desire to cause you harmor desire to bring you benefit?Rather Allah is well aware of what you do.’
12

bal ẓanantum ʾan lan yanqaliba r-rasūlu wa-l-muʾminūna ʾilā ʾahlīhim ʾabadan wa-zuyyina dhālika fī qulūbikum wa-ẓanantum ẓanna s-sawʾi wa-kuntum qawman būran

Rather you thoughtthat the Apostle and the faithful will not returnto their folk ever, and that was made to seem decorous to your hearts, and you entertained evil thoughts, and you were a ruined lot.
13

wa-man lam yuʾmin bi-llāhi wa-rasūlihī fa-ʾinnā ʾaʿtadnā li-l-kāfirīna saʿīran

As for those who have no faith in Allahand His Apostle,We have prepared a blaze for the faithless.
14

wa-li-llāhi mulku s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi yaghfiru li-man yashāʾu wa-yuʿadhdhibu man yashāʾu wa-kāna llāhu ghafūran raḥīman

To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavensand the earth:He forgives whomever He wishes, and punishes whomever He wishes, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
15

sa-yaqūlu l-mukhallafūna ʾidhā nṭalaqtum ʾilā maghānima li-taʾkhudhūhā dharūnā nattabiʿkum yurīdūna ʾan yubaddilū kalāma llāhi qul lan tattabiʿūnā ka-dhālikum qāla llāhu min qablu fa-sa-yaqūlūna bal taḥsudūnanā bal kānū lā yafqahūna ʾillā qalīlan

Those who were left to stay behind will say, when you set out to capture booty:‘Let us follow you.’They desire to change the word of Allah.Say, ‘You shall never follow us!Thus has Allah said beforehand.’Then they will say, ‘You are envious of us.’Rather they do not understand but a little.
16

qul li-l-mukhallafīna mina l-ʾaʿrābi sa-tudʿawna ʾilā qawmin ʾulī baʾsin shadīdin tuqātilūnahum ʾaw yuslimūna fa-ʾin tuṭīʿū yuʾtikumu llāhu ʾajran ḥasanan wa-ʾin tatawallaw ka-mā tawallaytum min qablu yuʿadhdhibkum ʿadhāban ʾalīman

Say to the Bedouins who were left to stay behind,‘You will be called against a peopleof a great might:they will embrace Islam, or you will fight them.So if you obey, Allah will give you a good reward;but if you turn away like you turned away before,He will punish you with a painful punishment.’
17

laysa ʿalā l-ʾaʿmā ḥarajun wa-lā ʿalā l-ʾaʿraji ḥarajun wa-lā ʿalā l-marīḍi ḥarajun wa-man yuṭiʿi llāha wa-rasūlahū yudkhilhu jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru wa-man yatawalla yuʿadhdhibhu ʿadhāban ʾalīman

There is no blame on the blind, nor is there any blame on the lame, nor is there blame on the sick;and whoever obeys Allah and His Apostle,He will admit him into gardenswith streams running in them, and whoever refuses to comply,He will punish him with a painful punishment.
18

la-qad raḍiya llāhu ʿani l-muʾminīna ʾidh yubāyiʿūnaka taḥta sh-shajarati fa-ʿalima mā fī qulūbihim fa-ʾanzala s-sakīnata ʿalayhim wa-ʾathābahum fatḥan qarīban

and abundant spoils that they will capture, and Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.
20

Allah has promised you abundant spoilswhich you will capture. He has expedited this one for you,and withheld men’s hands from you,so that it may be a sign for the faithful, and that He may guide you to a straight path.
21

wa-ʾukhrā lam taqdirū ʿalayhā qad ʾaḥāṭa llāhu bihā wa-kāna llāhu ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīran

And other [spoils]which you have not yet captured:Allah has comprehended them, and Allah has power over all things.
22

sunnata llāhi llatī qad khalat min qablu wa-lan tajida li-sunnati llāhi tabdīlan

[It is] Allah’s precedent that has passed before, and you will never find in Allah’s precedentany change.
24

wa-huwa lladhī kaffa ʾaydiyahum ʿankum wa-ʾaydiyakum ʿanhum bi-baṭni makkata min baʿdi ʾan ʾaẓfarakum ʿalayhim wa-kāna llāhu bi-mā taʿmalūna baṣīran

It is He who withheld their hands from you,and your hands from them,in the valley of Makkah, after He had given you victory over them, and Allah sees best what you do.
25

humu lladhīna kafarū wa-ṣaddūkum ʿani l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi wa-l-hadya maʿkūfan ʾan yablugha maḥillahū wa-law-lā rijālun muʾminūna wa-nisāʾun muʾminātun lam taʿlamūhum ʾan taṭʾūhum fa-tuṣībakum minhum maʿarratun bi-ghayri ʿilmin li-yudkhila llāhu fī raḥmatihī man yashāʾu law tazayyalū la-ʾadhdhabnā lladhīna kafarū minhum ʿadhāban ʾalīman

They are the ones who disbelievedand barred you from the Sacred Mosque, and kept the offering from reaching its destination. And were it not for [certain] faithful menand faithful women, whom you did not know—lest you should trample them, and thus blame for [killing] them should fall on youunawares;1 [He held you back]so that Allah may admit into His mercywhomever He wishes. And had they been separate,We would have surely punished the faithlessamong themwith a painful punishment.Ellipsis; the omitted phrase is ‘We would have given you a free hand against them.’
26

ʾidh jaʿala lladhīna kafarū fī qulūbihimu l-ḥamiyyata ḥamiyyata l-jāhiliyyati fa-ʾanzala llāhu sakīnatahū ʿalā rasūlihī wa-ʿalā l-muʾminīna wa-ʾalzamahum kalimata t-taqwā wa-kānū ʾaḥaqqa bihā wa-ʾahlahā wa-kāna llāhu bi-kulli shayʾin ʿalīman

27

la-qad ṣadaqa llāhu rasūlahu r-ruʾyā bi-l-ḥaqqi la-tadkhulunna l-masjida l-ḥarāma ʾin shāʾa llāhu ʾāminīna muḥalliqīna ruʾūsakum wa-muqaṣṣirīna lā takhāfūna fa-ʿalima mā lam taʿlamū fa-jaʿala min dūni dhālika fatḥan qarīban

huwa lladhī ʾarsala rasūlahū bi-l-hudā wa-dīni l-ḥaqqi li-yuẓhirahū ʿalā d-dīni kullihī wa-kafā bi-llāhi shahīdan

It is He who has sent His Apostle with guidanceand the true religion, that He may make it prevail over all religions, and Allah suffices as witness.
29

muḥammadun rasūlu llāhi wa-lladhīna maʿahū ʾashiddāʾu ʿalā l-kuffāri ruḥamāʾu baynahum tarāhum rukkaʿan sujjadan yabtaghūna faḍlan mina llāhi wa-riḍwānan sīmāhum fī wujūhihim min ʾathari s-sujūdi dhālika mathaluhum fī t-tawrāti wa-mathaluhum fī l-ʾinjīli ka-zarʿin ʾakhraja shaṭʾahū fa-ʾāzarahū fa-staghlaẓa fa-stawā ʿalā sūqihī yuʿjibu z-zurrāʿa li-yaghīẓa bihimu l-kuffāra waʿada llāhu lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti minhum maghfiratan wa-ʾajran ʿaẓīman

Muhammad, the Apostle of Allah, and those who are with himare hard against the faithlessand merciful amongst themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in worship],seeking Allah’s grace and [His] pleasure.Their mark is [visible] on their faces, from the effect of prostration.Such is their description in the Torahand their description in the Evangel.Like a tillagethat sends out its shoots and builds them up,and they grow stoutand settle on their stalks, impressing the sowers,so that He may enrage the faithless by them.Allah has promised thoseof them who have faith and do righteous deedsforgiveness and a great reward.
