Surah 46
AL-AḤQĀF
AḤQĀF
meccan 35 Verses
The surah that mentions the fatal lesion of the ancient people of ʿĀd who dwelled in the dune valley of Aḥqāf, whose prophet warned them to give up idolatry and worship only God, but to no avail. It takes its name from verse 21, where Aḥqāf is mentioned. It reflects one of the major themes of this surah: the inescapable punishment that awaits those who deny the truth and the Resurrection. Emphasis is placed on the fact that communities more established than the Meccans” have been destroyed, and that even the jinn believe in the Quran before the disbelievers of Mecca do. Finally, the Prophet is encouraged to be steadfast and await God’s judgement on the disbelievers. The surah is also known as: The Dune Valleys of al-Ahqaf, The Dunes, The Sand Dunes, The Sandy Plains, Winding Sand-tracts.

As for him who says to his parents,‘Fie on you!Do you promise methat I shall be raised [from the dead]when generations have passed away before me?’And they invoke Allah’s help[and say]: ‘Woe to you!Believe! Indeed Allah’s promise is true.’But he says,‘These are nothing but myths of the ancients.’

The day when the faithless are exposedto the Fire, [they will be told,]‘You have exhausted your good thingsin the life of the worldand enjoyed them.So today you will be requitedwith a humiliating punishmentfor your acting arrogantly in the earthunduly, and because you used to transgress.’
21

qāla ʾinnamā l-ʿilmu ʿinda llāhi wa-ʾuballighukum mā ʾursiltu bihī wa-lākinnī ʾarākum qawman tajhalūna

He said,‘The knowledge is with Allah alone.I communicate to you what I have been sent with. But I see that you are a senseless lot.’

fa-lammā raʾawhu ʿāriḍan mustaqbila ʾawdiyatihim qālū hādhā ʿāriḍun mumṭirunā bal huwa mā staʿjaltum bihī rīhun fīhā ʿadhābun ʾalīmun

When they saw it as a cloudadvancing toward their valleys, they said, ‘This cloud brings us rain.’‘Rather it is what you sought to hasten:a hurricane carrying a painful punishment,
25

tudammiru kulla shayʾin bi-ʾamri rabbihā fa-ʾaṣbaḥū lā yurā ʾillā masākinuhum ka-dhālika najzī l-qawma l-mujrimīna

destroying everything by its Lord’s command.’So they became such that nothing could be seenexcept their dwellings. Thus do We requite the guilty lot.
26

wa-la-qad makkannāhum fī-mā ʾin makkannākum fīhi wa-jaʿalnā lahum samʿan wa-ʾabṣāran wa-ʾafʾidatan fa-mā ʾaghnā ʿanhum samʿuhum wa-lā ʾabṣāruhum wa-lā ʾafʾidatuhum min shayʾin ʾidh kānū yajḥadūna bi-ʾāyāti llāhi wa-ḥāqa bihim mā kānū bihī yastahziʾūna

Certainly We had granted them powerin respects that We have not granted you,and We had vested them with hearing and sightand hearts. But neither their hearing availed themnor did their sight, nor their hearts, in any waywhen they used to impugn the signs of Allah. So they were besiegedby what they used to deride.
27

wa-la-qad ʾahlaknā mā ḥawlakum mina l-qurā wa-ṣarrafnā l-ʾāyāti laʿallahum yarjiʿūna

Certainly We destroyed towns that were around you,and We have paraphrased the signsso that they may come back.
28

So why did not those [false gods] helpthem whom they had taken, besides Allah,as gods, as means of nearness [to Him]?Rather they forsook them;and that was their lieand what they used to fabricate.
29

wa-ʾidh ṣarafnā ʾilayka nafaran mina l-jinni yastamiʿūna l-qurʾāna fa-lammā ḥaḍarūhu qālū ʾanṣitū fa-lammā quḍiya wallaw ʾilā qawmihim mundhirīna

When We dispatched toward you a team of jinnlistening to the Qurʾān,when they were in its presence, they said, ‘Be silent!’When it was finished, they went back to their peopleas warners.
30

qālū yā-qawmanā ʾinnā samiʿnā kitāban ʾunzila min baʿdi mūsā muṣaddiqan li-mā bayna yadayhi yahdī ʾilā l-ḥaqqi wa-ʾilā ṭarīqin mustaqīmin

They said, ‘O our people!Indeed we have heard a Bookwhich has been sent down after Moses, confirming what was before it.It guides to the truthand to a straight path.
31

yā-qawmanā ʾajībū dāʿiya llāhi wa-ʾāminū bihī yaghfir lakum min dhunūbikum wa-yujirkum min ʿadhābin ʾalīmin

O our people!Respond to Allah’s summonerand have faith in Him.He will forgive you some of your sinsand shelter you from a painful punishment.’
32

wa-man lā yujib dāʿiya llāhi fa-laysa bi-muʿjizin fī l-ʾarḍi wa-laysa lahū min dūnihī ʾawliyāʾu ʾulāʾika fī ḍalālin mubīnin

Those who do not respond to Allah’s summonercannot thwart [Allah] on the earth, and they will not find any protectors besides Him.They are in manifest error.
33

ʾa-wa-lam yaraw ʾanna llāha lladhī khalaqa s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍa wa-lam yaʿya bi-khalqihinna bi-qādirin ʿalā ʾan yuḥyiya l-mawtā balā ʾinnahū ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun

Do they not see that Allah, who created the heavens and the earthand [who] was not exhausted by their creation,is able to revive the dead?Yes, indeed He has power over all things.
34

wa-yawma yuʿraḍu lladhīna kafarū ʿalā n-nāri ʾa-laysa hādhā bi-l-ḥaqqi qālū balā wa-rabbinā qāla fa-dhūqū l-ʿadhāba bi-mā kuntum takfurūna

The day when the faithless are exposedto the Fire,[He will say,] ‘Is this not a fact?’They will say, ‘Yes, by our Lord!’He will say, ‘So taste the punishmentbecause of what you used to disbelieve.’
35

fa-ṣbir ka-mā ṣabara ʾulū l-ʿazmi mina r-rusuli wa-lā tastaʿjil lahum ka-ʾannahum yawma yarawna mā yūʿadūna lam yalbathū ʾillā sāʿatan min nahārin balāghun fa-hal yuhlaku ʾillā l-qawmu l-fāsiqūna

So be patientjust as the resolute among the apostles were patient, and do not seek to hasten [the punishment]for them. The day when they seewhat they are promised, [it will be]as though they had remained only an hour of a day. This is a proclamation. So shall anyone be destroyedexcept the transgressing lot?
