The surah that enshrines the spiritual-, property-, lineage-, and marriage-rights and obligations of Women. It makes frequent reference to matters concerning women (nisāʾ), hence its name. The surah gives a number of instructions, urging justice to children and orphans, and mentioning inheritance and marriage laws. In the first and last verses of the surah, it gives rulings on property and inheritance. The surah also talks of the tensions between the Muslim community in Medina and some of the People of the Book (verse 44 and verse 61), moving into a general discussion of war: it warns the Muslims to be cautious and to defend the weak and helpless (verse 71 .). Another similar theme is the intrigues of the hypocrites (verse 88 . and verse 138 .).The surah is also known as: The Woman.

yā-ʾayyuhā n-nāsu ttaqū rabbakumu lladhī khalaqakum min nafsin wāḥidatin wa-khalaqa minhā zawjahā wa-baththa minhumā rijālan kathīran wa-nisāʾan wa-ttaqū llāha lladhī tasāʾalūna bihī wa-l-ʾarḥāma ʾinna llāha kāna ʿalaykum raqīban
O mankind! Be wary of your Lord who created you from a single soul, and created its mate from it, and from the two of them, scattered numerous men and women. Be wary of Allah, in whose Name you adjure one another, and the wombs.1 Indeed Allah is watchful over you. That is, ‘Be wary of Allah and observe the rights of the blood relations and beware of breaking the ties of kinship.’
2
wa-ʾātū l-yatāmā ʾamwālahum wa-lā tatabaddalū l-khabītha bi-ṭ-ṭayyibi wa-lā taʾkulū ʾamwālahum ʾilā ʾamwālikum ʾinnahū kāna ḥūban kabīran
Give the orphans their property, and do not replace the good with the bad, and do not eat up their property [by mingling it] with your own property, for that is indeed a great sin.1See verse 2:220 and the footnote.
3
wa-ʾin khiftum ʾallā tuqsiṭū fī l-yatāmā fa-nkiḥū mā ṭāba lakum mina n-nisāʾi mathnā wa-thulātha wa-rubāʿa fa-ʾin khiftum ʾallā taʿdilū fa-wāḥidatan ʾaw mā malakat ʾaymānukum dhālika ʾadnā ʾallā taʿūlū
If you fear that you may not deal justly with the orphans,1 then marry [other] women that you like, two, three, or four. But if you fear that you may not treat them fairly, then [marry only] one, or [marry from among] your slave-women. That makes it likelier that you will not be unfair. That is, girl orphans.
4
wa-ʾātū n-nisāʾa ṣaduqātihinna niḥlatan fa-ʾin ṭibna lakum ʿan shayʾin minhu nafsan fa-kulūhu hanīʾan marīʾan
Give women their dowries as an obligation; but if they remit anything of it of their own accord, then consume it as [something] lawful and wholesome.
5
wa-lā tuʾtū s-sufahāʾa ʾamwālakumu llatī jaʿala llāhu lakum qiyāman wa-rzuqūhum fīhā wa-ksūhum wa-qūlū lahum qawlan maʿrūfan
Do not give the feeble-minded your property which Allah has assigned you to manage: provide for them out of it, and clothe them, and speak to them honourable words.
6
wa-btalū l-yatāmā ḥattā ʾidhā balaghū n-nikāḥa fa-ʾin ʾānastum minhum rushdan fa-dfaʿū ʾilayhim ʾamwālahum wa-lā taʾkulūhā ʾisrāfan wa-bidāran ʾan yakbarū wa-man kāna ghaniyyan fa-l-yastaʿfif wa-man kāna faqīran fa-l-yaʾkul bi-l-maʿrūfi fa-ʾidhā dafaʿtum ʾilayhim ʾamwālahum fa-ʾashhidū ʿalayhim wa-kafā bi-llāhi ḥasīban
Test the orphans when they reach the age of marriage. Then if you discern in them maturity, deliver to them their property. And do not consume it lavishly and hastily lest they should grow up. As for him who is well-off, let him be abstemious, and as for him who is poor, let him eat in an honourable manner. And when you deliver to them their property, take witnesses over them, and Allah suffices as reckoner.
7
li-r-rijāli naṣībun mimmā taraka l-wālidāni wa-l-ʾaqrabūna wa-li-n-nisāʾi naṣībun mimmā taraka l-wālidāni wa-l-ʾaqrabūna mimmā qalla minhu ʾaw kathura naṣīban mafrūḍan
Men have a share in the heritage left by parents and near relatives, and women have a share in the heritage left by parents and near relatives, whether it be little or much, a share ordained [by Allah].
8
wa-ʾidhā ḥaḍara l-qismata ʾulū l-qurbā wa-l-yatāmā wa-l-masākīnu fa-rzuqūhum minhu wa-qūlū lahum qawlan maʿrūfan
And when the division is attended by relatives, the orphans and the needy, provide for them out of it, and speak to them honourable words.
9
wa-l-yakhsha lladhīna law tarakū min khalfihim dhurriyyatan ḍiʿāfan khāfū ʿalayhim fa-l-yattaqū llāha wa-l-yaqūlū qawlan sadīdan
Let those fear [the result of mistreating orphans] who, were they to leave behind weak offspring, would be concerned on their account. So let them be wary of Allah, and let them speak upright words.
10
ʾinna lladhīna yaʾkulūna ʾamwāla l-yatāmā ẓulman ʾinnamā yaʾkulūna fī buṭūnihim nāran wa-sa-yaṣlawna saʿīran
Indeed those who consume the property of orphans wrongfully, only ingest fire into their bellies, and soon they will enter the Blaze.

Allah enjoins you concerning your children: for the male shall be the like of the share of two females, and if there be [two or] more than two females, then for them shall be two-thirds of what he1 leaves; but if she be alone, then for her shall be a half; and for each of his parents a sixth of what he leaves, if he has children; but if he has no children, and his parents are his [sole] heirs, then it shall be a third for his mother; but if he has brothers, then a sixth for his mother, after [paying off] any bequest he may have made or any debt [he may have incurred]. Your parents and your children —you do not know which of them is likelier to be beneficial for you. This is an ordinance from Allah. Indeed Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.That is, the deceased person.

For you shall be a half of what your wives leave, if they have no children; but if they have children, then for you shall be a fourth of what they leave, after [paying off] any bequest they may have made or any debt [they may have incurred]. And for them [it shall be] a fourth of what you leave, if you have no children; but if you have children, then for them shall be an eighth of what you leave, after [paying off] any bequest you may have made or any debt [you may have incurred]. If a man or woman is inherited by siblings1 and has a brother or a sister, then each of them shall receive a sixth; but if they are more than that, then they shall share in one third, after [paying off] any bequest he may have made or any debt [he may have incurred] without prejudice.2 [This is] an enjoinment from Allah, and Allah is all-knowing, all-forbearing.Kalālah means the siblings of a deceased person without a first-degree heir. See verse 4:176 below. That is, the will should not encroach on the rights of the heirs, for instance by acknowledging a nonexistent debt.

These are Allah’s bounds, and whoever obeys Allah and His Apostle, He shall admit him to gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever]. That is the great success.
14
wa-man yaʿṣi llāha wa-rasūlahū wa-yataʿadda ḥudūdahū yudkhilhu nāran khālidan fīhā wa-lahū ʿadhābun muhīnun
But whoever disobeys Allah and His Apostle, and transgresses the bounds set by Allah, He shall make him enter a Fire, to remain in it [forever], and there will be a humiliating punishment for him.

Should any of your women commit an indecent act,1 produce against them four witness from yourselves, and if they testify, detain them2 in [their] houses until death finishes them, or Allah decrees a course for them.3That is, adultery. That is, the women against whom testimony has been given.Superseded by the punishment by stoning for adultery and by verse 24:2 which prescribes the punishment for fornication.
16
wa-lladhāni yaʾtiyānihā minkum fa-ʾādhūhumā fa-ʾin tābā wa-ʾaṣlaḥā fa-ʾaʿriḍū ʿanhumā ʾinna llāha kāna tawwāban raḥīman
Should two among you commit it,1 chastise them both; but if they repent and reform, let them alone. Indeed Allah is all-clement, all-merciful.That is, fornication (or sodomy, according to some exegetes).
17

[Acceptance of] repentance by Allah is only for those who commit evil out of ignorance, then repent promptly. It is such whose repentance Allah will accept, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
18

But [acceptance of] repentance is not for those who go on committing misdeeds: when death approaches any of them, he says, ‘I repent now.’ Nor is it for those who die while they are faithless. For such We have prepared a painful punishment.

O you who have faith! It is not lawful for you to inherit women forcibly, and do not press them to take away part of what you have given them, unless they commit a gross indecency.1 Consort with them in an honourable manner; and should you dislike them, maybe you dislike something while Allah invests it with an abundant good. That is, adultery.

If you desire to take a wife in place of another, and you have given one of them a quintal [of gold], do not take anything away from it. Would you take it by way of calumny and flagrant sin?!

wa-lā tankiḥū mā nakaḥa ʾābāʾukum mina n-nisāʾi ʾillā mā qad salafa ʾinnahū kāna fāḥishatan wa-maqtan wa-sāʾa sabīlan
Do not marry any of the women whom your fathers had married, excluding what is already past. That is indeed an indecency, an outrage and an evil course.
23

wa-man lam yastaṭiʿ minkum ṭawlan ʾan yankiḥa l-muḥṣanāti l-muʾmināti fa-min mā malakat ʾaymānukum min fatayātikumu l-muʾmināti wa-llāhu ʾaʿlamu bi-ʾīmānikum baʿḍukum min baʿḍin fa-nkiḥūhunna bi-ʾidhni ʾahlihinna wa-ʾātūhunna ʾujūrahunna bi-l-maʿrūfi muḥṣanātin ghayra musāfiḥātin wa-lā muttakhidhāti ʾakhdānin fa-ʾidhā ʾuḥṣinna fa-ʾin ʾatayna bi-fāḥishatin fa-ʿalayhinna niṣfu mā ʿalā l-muḥṣanāti mina l-ʿadhābi dhālika li-man khashiya l-ʿanata minkum wa-ʾan taṣbirū khayrun lakum wa-llāhu ghafūrun raḥīmun
As for those of you who cannot afford to marry faithful free women, then [let them marry] from what you own, from among your faithful slave-women. Your faith is best known [only] to Allah; you are all [on a] similar [footing]. So marry them with their masters’ permission, and give them their dowries in an honourable manner —[such of them] as are chaste women, not licentious ones or those who take paramours. But on marrying, should they commit an indecent act, then there shall be for them [only] half the punishment for free women. This is for those of you who fear falling into fornication; but it is better that you be continent,1 and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.That is, by refraining from marriage with slave-women.
26
yurīdu llāhu li-yubayyina lakum wa-yahdiyakum sunana lladhīna min qablikum wa-yatūba ʿalaykum wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun
Allah desires to explain [the laws] to you, and to guide you to the customs of those who were before you,1 and to turn toward you clemently, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.That is, to the customs of the prophets of the past and their communities.
27
wa-llāhu yurīdu ʾan yatūba ʿalaykum wa-yurīdu lladhīna yattabiʿūna sh-shahawāti ʾan tamīlū maylan ʿaẓīman
Allah desires to turn toward you clemently, but those who pursue their [base] appetites desire that you fall into gross waywardness.
28
yurīdu llāhu ʾan yukhaffifa ʿankum wa-khuliqa l-ʾinsānu ḍaʿīfan
Allah desires to lighten your burden, for man was created weak.
29
yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū lā taʾkulū ʾamwālakum baynakum bi-l-bāṭili ʾillā ʾan takūna tijāratan ʿan tarāḍin minkum wa-lā taqtulū ʾanfusakum ʾinna llāha kāna bikum raḥīman
O you who have faith! Do not eat up your wealth among yourselves unrightfully,1 but it should be trade by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves.2 Indeed Allah is most merciful to you. That is, by way of usury, gambling, usurpation, false claim, or any other illegitimate means. That is, do not destroy yourselves by consuming wealth acquired through illegitimate means, such as usury, gambling, fraud, theft, bribery, usurpation and so on; or it means, do not commit suicide, or murder, or, do not expose yourselves recklessly to mortal danger.
30
wa-man yafʿal dhālika ʿudwānan wa-ẓulman fa-sawfa nuṣlīhi nāran wa-kāna dhālika ʿalā llāhi yasīran
And whoever does that in aggression and injustice, We will soon make him enter the Fire, and that is easy for Allah.
31
ʾin tajtanibū kabāʾira mā tunhawna ʿanhu nukaffir ʿankum sayyiʾātikum wa-nudkhilkum mudkhalan karīman
If you avoid the major sins that you are forbidden, We will absolve you of your misdeeds, and admit you to a noble abode.
32
wa-lā tatamannaw mā faḍḍala llāhu bihī baʿḍakum ʿalā baʿḍin li-r-rijāli naṣībun mimmā ktasabū wa-li-n-nisāʾi naṣībun mimmā ktasabna wa-sʾalū llāha min faḍlihī ʾinna llāha kāna bi-kulli shayʾin ʿalīman
Do not covet the advantage which Allah has given some of you over others. To men belongs a share of what they have earned, and to women a share of what they have earned. And ask Allah for His grace. Indeed Allah has knowledge of all things.
33
wa-li-kullin jaʿalnā mawāliya mimmā taraka l-wālidāni wa-l-ʾaqrabūna wa-lladhīna ʿaqadat ʾaymānukum fa-ʾātūhum naṣībahum ʾinna llāha kāna ʿalā kulli shayʾin shahīdan-i
For everyone We have appointed heirs to what the parents and near relatives leave, as well as those with whom you have made a compact; so give them their share [of the heritage]. Indeed Allah is witness to all things.
34
ar-rijālu qawwāmūna ʿalā n-nisāʾi bi-mā faḍḍala llāhu baʿḍahum ʿalā baʿḍin wa-bi-mā ʾanfaqū min ʾamwālihim fa-ṣ-ṣāliḥātu qānitātun ḥāfiẓātun li-l-ghaybi bi-mā ḥafiẓa llāhu wa-llātī takhāfūna nushūzahunna fa-ʿiẓūhunna wa-hjurūhunna fī l-maḍājiʿi wa-ḍribūhunna fa-ʾin ʾaṭaʿnakum fa-lā tabghū ʿalayhinna sabīlan ʾinna llāha kāna ʿaliyyan kabīran
Men are the managers of women, because of the advantage Allah has granted some of them over others, and by virtue of their spending out of their wealth. So righteous women are obedient, care-taking in the absence [of their husbands] of what Allah has enjoined [them] to guard. As for those [wives] whose misconduct you fear, [first] advise them, and [if ineffective] keep away from them in the bed, and [as the last resort] beat them. Then if they obey you, do not seek any course [of action] against them. Indeed Allah is all-exalted, all-great.
35
wa-ʾin khiftum shiqāqa baynihimā fa-bʿathū ḥakaman min ʾahlihī wa-ḥakaman min ʾahlihā ʾin yurīdā ʾiṣlāḥan yuwaffiqi llāhu baynahumā ʾinna llāha kāna ʿalīman khabīran
And if you fear a split between the two of them, then appoint an arbiter from his relatives and an arbiter from her relatives. If they desire reconcilement, Allah shall reconcile them.1 Indeed Allah is all-knowing, all-aware.That is, if the arbiters consider it advisable for the couple to remain united in wedlock, Allah will bring about a reconciliation between them.
36
wa-ʿbudū llāha wa-lā tushrikū bihī shayʾan wa-bi-l-wālidayni ʾiḥsānan wa-bi-dhī l-qurbā wa-l-yatāmā wa-l-masākīni wa-l-jāri dhī l-qurbā wa-l-jāri l-junubi wa-ṣ-ṣāḥibi bi-l-janbi wa-bni s-sabīli wa-mā malakat ʾaymānukum ʾinna llāha lā yuḥibbu man kāna mukhtālan fakhūran-i
Worship Allah and do not ascribe any partners to Him, and be good to parents, the relatives, the orphans, the needy, the near neighbour and the distant neighbour, the companion at your side, the traveller, and your slaves. Indeed Allah does not like anyone who is a swaggering braggart.
37
alladhīna yabkhalūna wa-yaʾmurūna n-nāsa bi-l-bukhli wa-yaktumūna mā ʾātāhumu llāhu min faḍlihī wa-ʾaʿtadnā li-l-kāfirīna ʿadhāban muhīnan
Those who are stingy and bid [other] people to be stingy, and conceal whatever Allah has given them out of His grace; and We have prepared for the faithless a humiliating punishment.
38
wa-lladhīna yunfiqūna ʾamwālahum riʾāʾa n-nāsi wa-lā yuʾminūna bi-llāhi wa-lā bi-l-yawmi l-ʾākhiri wa-man yakuni sh-shayṭānu lahū qarīnan fa-sāʾa qarīnan
And those who spend their wealth to be seen by people, and believe neither in Allah nor in the Last Day. As for him who has Satan for his companion —an evil companion is he!
39
wa-mādhā ʿalayhim law ʾāmanū bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ʾākhiri wa-ʾanfaqū mimmā razaqahumu llāhu wa-kāna llāhu bihim ʿalīman
What harm would it have done them had they believed in Allah and the Last Day, and spent out of what Allah has provided them? Allah knows them well.
40
ʾinna llāha lā yaẓlimu mithqāla dharratin wa-ʾin taku ḥasanatan yuḍāʿifhā wa-yuʾti min ladunhu ʾajran ʿaẓīman
Indeed Allah does not wrong [anyone] [even to the extent of] an atom’s weight, and if it be a good deed He doubles it[s reward], and gives from Himself a great reward.
41
fa-kayfa ʾidhā jiʾnā min kulli ʾummatin bi-shahīdin wa-jiʾnā bika ʿalā hāʾulāʾi shahīdan
So how shall it be, when We bring from every nation a witness and We bring you as a witness to them?
42
yawmaʾidhin yawaddu lladhīna kafarū wa-ʿaṣawu r-rasūla law tusawwā bihimu l-ʾarḍu wa-lā yaktumūna llāha ḥadīthan
On that day those who were faithless and [who] disobeyed the Apostle will wish the earth were levelled with them, and they will not conceal any matter from Allah.
43
yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū lā taqrabū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ʾantum sukārā ḥattā taʿlamū mā taqūlūna wa-lā junuban ʾillā ʿābirī sabīlin ḥattā taghtasilū wa-ʾin kuntum marḍā ʾaw ʿalā safarin ʾaw jāʾa ʾaḥadun minkum mina l-ghāʾiṭi ʾaw lāmastumu n-nisāʾa fa-lam tajidū māʾan fa-tayammamū ṣaʿīdan ṭayyiban fa-msaḥū bi-wujūhikum wa-ʾaydīkum ʾinna llāha kāna ʿafuwwan ghafūran
O you who have faith! Do not approach prayer when you are intoxicated, [not] until you know what you are saying, nor [enter mosques] in the state of ritual impurity —except while passing through— until you have washed yourselves. But if you are sick or on a journey, or any of you has come from the toilet, or you have touched women,1 and you cannot find water, then make your ablution on clean ground and wipe a part of your faces and your hands. Indeed Allah is all-excusing, all-forgiving.That is, if you have performed sexual intercourse.
44
ʾa-lam tara ʾilā lladhīna ʾūtū naṣīban mina l-kitābi yashtarūna ḍ-ḍalālata wa-yurīdūna ʾan taḍillū s-sabīla
Have you not regarded those who were given a share of the Book, who purchase error and desire that you [too] should lose the way?
45
wa-llāhu ʾaʿlamu bi-ʾaʿdāʾikum wa-kafā bi-llāhi waliyyan wa-kafā bi-llāhi naṣīran
But Allah knows your enemies better, and Allah suffices as guardian, and Allah suffices as helper.
46
mina lladhīna hādū yuḥarrifūna l-kalima ʿan mawāḍiʿihī wa-yaqūlūna samiʿnā wa-ʿaṣaynā wa-smaʿ ghayra musmaʿin wa-rāʿinā layyan bi-ʾalsinatihim wa-ṭaʿnan fī d-dīni wa-law ʾannahum qālū samiʿnā wa-ʾaṭaʿnā wa-smaʿ wa-nẓurnā la-kāna khayran lahum wa-ʾaqwama wa-lākin laʿanahumu llāhu bi-kufrihim fa-lā yuʾminūna ʾillā qalīlan
Among the Jews are those who pervert words from their meanings and say, ‘We hear and disobey’ and ‘Hear without listening!’ and ‘Rāʿinā,’ twisting their tongues and reviling the faith. But had they said, ‘We hear and obey’ and ‘Listen’ and ‘Unẓurnā,’ it would have been better for them, and more upright.1 But Allah has cursed them for their faithlessness, so they will not believe except a few.See 2:104 and the related footnote.
47
yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾūtū l-kitāba ʾāminū bi-mā nazzalnā muṣaddiqan li-mā maʿakum min qabli ʾan naṭmisa wujūhan fa-naruddahā ʿalā ʾadbārihā ʾaw nalʿanahum ka-mā laʿannā ʾaṣḥāba s-sabti wa-kāna ʾamru llāhi mafʿūlan
O you who were given the Book! Believe in what We have sent down confirming what is with you, before We blot out the faces and turn them backwards, or curse them as We cursed the People of the Sabbath, and Allah’s command is bound to be fulfilled.
48
ʾinna llāha lā yaghfiru ʾan yushraka bihī wa-yaghfiru mā dūna dhālika li-man yashāʾu wa-man yushrik bi-llāhi fa-qadi ftarā ʾithman ʿaẓīman
Indeed Allah does not forgive that any partner should be ascribed to Him, but He forgives anything besides that to whomever He wishes. And whoever ascribes partners to Allah has indeed fabricated [a lie] in great sinfulness.
49
ʾa-lam tara ʾilā lladhīna yuzakkūna ʾanfusahum bali llāhu yuzakkī man yashāʾu wa-lā yuẓlamūna fatīlan-i
Have you not regarded those who style themselves as pure? Rather it is Allah who purifies whomever He wishes, and they will not be wronged [so much as] a single date-thread.
50
unẓur kayfa yaftarūna ʿalā llāhi l-kadhiba wa-kafā bihī ʾithman mubīnan
Look, how they fabricate lies against Allah! That suffices for a flagrant sin.
51
ʾa-lam tara ʾilā lladhīna ʾūtū naṣīban mina l-kitābi yuʾminūna bi-l-jibti wa-ṭ-ṭāghūti wa-yaqūlūna li-lladhīna kafarū hāʾulāʾi ʾahdā mina lladhīna ʾāmanū sabīlan
Have you not regarded those who were given a share of the Book1 believing in idols and the Rebels2 and saying of the pagans: ‘These are better guided on the way than the faithful’?That is, the Jews.Or ‘magic and evil spirits.’ Cf. footnote at 2:256.
52
ʾulāʾika lladhīna laʿanahumu llāhu wa-man yalʿani llāhu fa-lan tajida lahū naṣīran
They are the ones whom Allah has cursed, and whomever Allah curses, you will never find any helper for him.
53
ʾam lahum naṣībun mina l-mulki fa-ʾidhan lā yuʾtūna n-nāsa naqīran
Or do they have a share in sovereignty?1 If so, they will not give the people [so much as] a speck on a date-stone!Or ‘in the kingdom.’
54
ʾam yaḥsudūna n-nāsa ʿalā mā ʾātāhumu llāhu min faḍlihī fa-qad ʾātaynā ʾāla ʾibrāhīma l-kitāba wa-l-ḥikmata wa-ʾātaynāhum mulkan ʿaẓīman
Or do they envy the people for what Allah has given them out of His grace? We have certainly given the progeny of Abraham the Book and wisdom, and We have given them a great sovereignty.1A reference to the Imamate, as mentioned in 2:124. According to the traditions of the Imams of the Prophet’s descent (who represent Abraham’s progeny, through Ishmael), by the ‘great sovereignty’ is meant the office of the Imamate, because to obey the Imam is to obey Allah and to disobey the Imam is to disobey Allah. See the commentaries of Furāt al-Kūfī, ʿAyyāshī, Qummī and Ḥibrī.
55
fa-minhum man ʾāmana bihī wa-minhum man ṣadda ʿanhu wa-kafā bi-jahannama saʿīran
Of them1 are some who believe in him, and of them are some who deter [others] from him; and hell suffices for a blaze! That is, from among the Jews there are some who believe in the Prophet (ṣ).
56
ʾinna lladhīna kafarū bi-ʾāyātinā sawfa nuṣlīhim nāran kullamā naḍijat julūduhum baddalnāhum julūdan ghayrahā li-yadhūqū l-ʿadhāba ʾinna llāha kāna ʿazīzan ḥakīman
Indeed those who defy Our signs, We shall soon make them enter a Fire: as often as their skins become scorched, We shall replace them with other skins, so that they may taste the punishment. Indeed Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.
57
wa-lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti sa-nudkhiluhum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru khālidīna fīhā ʾabadan lahum fīhā ʾazwājun muṭahharatun wa-nudkhiluhum ẓillan ẓalīlan
As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, We shall admit them into gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them forever. In it there will be chaste mates for them, and We shall admit them into a deep shade.1Or ‘into a shady twilight;’ see the footnote at 25:45.
58
ʾinna llāha yaʾmurukum ʾan tuʾaddū l-ʾamānāti ʾilā ʾahlihā wa-ʾidhā ḥakamtum bayna n-nāsi ʾan taḥkumū bi-l-ʿadli ʾinna llāha niʿimmā yaʿiẓukum bihī ʾinna llāha kāna samīʿan baṣīran
Indeed Allah commands you to deliver the trusts to their [rightful] owners, and, when you judge between people, to judge with fairness. Excellent indeed is what Allah advises you. Indeed Allah is all-hearing, all-seeing.
59
yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū ʾaṭīʿū llāha wa-ʾaṭīʿū r-rasūla wa-ʾulī l-ʾamri minkum fa-ʾin tanāzaʿtum fī shayʾin fa-ruddūhu ʾilā llāhi wa-r-rasūli ʾin kuntum tuʾminūna bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ʾākhiri dhālika khayrun wa-ʾaḥsanu taʾwīlan
O you who have faith! Obey Allah and obey the Apostle and those vested with authority among you.1 And if you dispute concerning anything, refer it to Allah and the Apostle, if you have faith in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more favourable in outcome.Cf. verse 4:54 above.
60
ʾa-lam tara ʾilā lladhīna yazʿumūna ʾannahum ʾāmanū bi-mā ʾunzila ʾilayka wa-mā ʾunzila min qablika yurīdūna ʾan yataḥākamū ʾilā ṭ-ṭāghūti wa-qad ʾumirū ʾan yakfurū bihī wa-yurīdu sh-shayṭānu ʾan yuḍillahum ḍalālan baʿīdan
Have you not regarded those who claim that they believe in what has been sent down to you, and what was sent down before you? They desire to seek the judgment of the Rebel,1 though they were commanded to defy it, and Satan desires to lead them astray into far error.See the footnote at 2:256.
61
wa-ʾidhā qīla lahum taʿālaw ʾilā mā ʾanzala llāhu wa-ʾilā r-rasūli raʾayta l-munāfiqīna yaṣuddūna ʿanka ṣudūdan
And when they are told, ‘Come to what Allah has sent down and [come] to the Apostle,’ you see the hypocrites keep away from you aversely.
62
fa-kayfa ʾidhā ʾaṣābathum muṣībatun bi-mā qaddamat ʾaydīhim thumma jāʾūka yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi ʾin ʾaradnā ʾillā ʾiḥsānan wa-tawfīqan
But how will it be when an affliction visits them because of what their hands have sent ahead? Then they will come to you, swearing by Allah: ‘We desired nothing but benevolence and comity.’
63
ʾulāʾika lladhīna yaʿlamu llāhu mā fī qulūbihim fa-ʾaʿriḍ ʿanhum wa-ʿiẓhum wa-qul lahum fī ʾanfusihim qawlan balīghan
They are the ones whom Allah knows as to what is in their hearts. So let them alone, and advise them, and speak to them concerning themselves far-reaching words.
64
wa-mā ʾarsalnā min rasūlin ʾillā li-yuṭāʿa bi-ʾidhni llāhi wa-law ʾannahum ʾidh ẓalamū ʾanfusahum jāʾūka fa-staghfarū llāha wa-staghfara lahumu r-rasūlu la-wajadū llāha tawwāban raḥīman
We did not send any apostle but to be obeyed by Allah’s leave. Had they, when they wronged themselves, come to you and pleaded to Allah for forgiveness, and the Apostle had pleaded for forgiveness for them, they would have surely found Allah all-clement, all-merciful.
65
fa-lā wa-rabbika lā yuʾminūna ḥattā yuḥakkimūka fī-mā shajara baynahum thumma lā yajidū fī ʾanfusihim ḥarajan mimmā qaḍayta wa-yusallimū taslīman
But no, by your Lord! They will not believe until they make you a judge in their disputes, then do not find within their hearts any dissent to your verdict and submit in full submission.
66
wa-law ʾannā katabnā ʿalayhim ʾani qtulū ʾanfusakum ʾawi khrujū min diyārikum mā faʿalūhu ʾillā qalīlun minhum wa-law ʾannahum faʿalū mā yūʿaẓūna bihī la-kāna khayran lahum wa-ʾashadda tathbītan
Had We prescribed for them, [commanding]: ‘Slay [the guilty among] your folks1 or leave your habitations,’ they would not have done it, except a few of them. And if they had done as they were advised it would have been better for them, and firmer in confirming [their faith].As in the case of the Israelites who were ordered to kill those who were guilty among them of the worship of the Calf. See 2:54.
67
wa-ʾidhan la-ʾātaynāhum min ladunnā ʾajran ʿaẓīman
Then We would surely have given them a great reward from Us,
68
wa-la-hadaynāhum ṣirāṭan mustaqīman
and We would have surely guided them to a straight path.
69
wa-man yuṭiʿi llāha wa-r-rasūla fa-ʾulāʾika maʿa lladhīna ʾanʿama llāhu ʿalayhim mina n-nabiyyīna wa-ṣ-ṣiddīqīna wa-sh-shuhadāʾi wa-ṣ-ṣāliḥīna wa-ḥasuna ʾulāʾika rafīqan
Whoever obeys Allah and the Apostle —they are with those whom Allah has blessed, including the prophets and the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous, and excellent companions are they!
70
dhālika l-faḍlu mina llāhi wa-kafā bi-llāhi ʿalīman
That is the grace of Allah, and Allah suffices as knower [of His creatures].
71
yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū khudhū ḥidhrakum fa-nfirū thubātin ʾawi-nfirū jamīʿan
O you who have faith! Take your precautions, then go forth in companies, or go forth en masse.
72
wa-ʾinna minkum la-man la-yubaṭṭiʾanna fa-ʾin ʾaṣābatkum muṣībatun qāla qad ʾanʿama llāhu ʿalayya ʾidh lam ʾakun maʿahum shahīdan
Among you is indeed he who drags his feet, and should an affliction visit you, he says, ‘It was certainly Allah’s blessing that I did not accompany them!’
73
wa-la-ʾin ʾaṣābakum faḍlun mina llāhi la-yaqūlanna ka-ʾan lam takun baynakum wa-baynahū mawaddatun yā-laytanī kuntu maʿahum fa-ʾafūza fawzan ʿaẓīman
But should a grace from Allah come to you, he will surely say, as if there were no affection between you and him, ‘I wish I were with them so that I had achieved a great success!’
74
fa-l-yuqātil fī sabīli llāhi lladhīna yashrūna l-ḥayāta d-dunyā bi-l-ʾākhirati wa-man yuqātil fī sabīli llāhi fa-yuqtal ʾaw yaghlib fa-sawfa nuʾtīhi ʾajran ʿaẓīman
Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter; and whoever fights in the way of Allah, and then is slain, or he subdues [the enemy], soon We shall give him a great reward.
75
wa-mā lakum lā tuqātilūna fī sabīli llāhi wa-l-mustaḍʿafīna mina r-rijāli wa-n-nisāʾi wa-l-wildāni lladhīna yaqūlūna rabbanā ʾakhrijnā min hādhihi l-qaryati ẓ-ẓālimi ʾahluhā wa-jʿal lanā min ladunka waliyyan wa-jʿal lanā min ladunka naṣīran-i
Why should you not fight in the way of Allah and the abased men, women, and children, who say, ‘Our Lord, bring us out of this town whose people are wrongdoers, and appoint for us a guardian from You, and appoint for us a helper from You’?
76
alladhīna ʾāmanū yuqātilūna fī sabīli llāhi wa-lladhīna kafarū yuqātilūna fī sabīli ṭ-ṭāghūti fa-qātilū ʾawliyāʾa sh-shayṭāni ʾinna kayda sh-shayṭāni kāna ḍaʿīfan
Those who have faith fight in the way of Allah, and those who are faithless fight in the way of the Rebel. So fight the friends of Satan; indeed the stratagems of Satan are always flimsy.
77
ʾa-lam tara ʾilā lladhīna qīla lahum kuffū ʾaydiyakum wa-ʾaqīmū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ʾātū z-zakāta fa-lammā kutiba ʿalayhimu l-qitālu ʾidhā farīqun minhum yakhshawna n-nāsa ka-khashyati llāhi ʾaw ʾashadda khashyatan wa-qālū rabbanā li-ma katabta ʿalaynā l-qitāla law-lā ʾakhkhartanā ʾilā ʾajalin qarībin qul matāʿu d-dunyā qalīlun wa-l-ʾākhiratu khayrun li-mani ttaqā wa-lā tuẓlamūna fatīlan
Have you not regarded those who were told, ‘Keep your hands off [from warfare], and maintain the prayer, and give the zakāt’? But when fighting was prescribed for them, behold, a part of them were afraid of people as if fearing Allah, or were even more afraid, and they said, ‘Our Lord! Why did You prescribe fighting for us? Why did You not respite us for a short time?!’1 Say, ‘The enjoyment of this world is little and the Hereafter is better for the Godwary, and you will not be wronged so much as a single date-thread.Or ‘until an imminent time;’ that is, until the time of natural death, which is not far in any case. Cf. 14:44; 63:10-11.
78
ʾaynamā takūnū yudrikkumu l-mawtu wa-law kuntum fī burūjin mushayyadatin wa-ʾin tuṣibhum ḥasanatun yaqūlū hādhihī min ʿindi llāhi wa-ʾin tuṣibhum sayyiʾatun yaqūlū hādhihī min ʿindika qul kullun min ʿindi llāhi fa-mā-li hāʾulāʾi l-qawmi lā yakādūna yafqahūna ḥadīthan
Wherever you may be, death shall overtake you, even if you were in fortified towers.’ And if any good befalls them, they say, ‘This is from Allah;’ and when an ill befalls them, they say, ‘This is from you.’ Say, ‘All is from Allah.’ What is the matter with these people that they would not understand any matter?
79
mā ʾaṣābaka min ḥasanatin fa-mina llāhi wa-mā ʾaṣābaka min sayyiʾatin fa-min nafsika wa-ʾarsalnāka li-n-nāsi rasūlan wa-kafā bi-llāhi shahīdan
Whatever good befalls you is from Allah; and whatever ill befalls you is from yourself. We sent you as an apostle to mankind, and Allah suffices as a witness.
80
man yuṭiʿi r-rasūla fa-qad ʾaṭāʿa llāha wa-man tawallā fa-mā ʾarsalnāka ʿalayhim ḥafīẓan
Whoever obeys the Apostle certainly obeys Allah; and as for those who turn their backs [on you], We have not sent you to keep watch over them.
81
wa-yaqūlūna ṭāʿatun fa-ʾidhā barazū min ʿindika bayyata ṭāʾifatun minhum ghayra lladhī taqūlu wa-llāhu yaktubu mā yubayyitūna fa-ʾaʿriḍ ʿanhum wa-tawakkal ʿalā llāhi wa-kafā bi-llāhi wakīlan
They profess obedience [to you], but when they go out from your presence, a group of them conspire overnight [to do] something other than what you say. But Allah records what they conspire overnight. So disregard them and put your trust in Allah, for Allah suffices as trustee.
82
ʾa-fa-lā yatadabbarūna l-qurʾāna wa-law kāna min ʿindi ghayri llāhi la-wajadū fīhi khtilāfan kathīran
Do they not contemplate the Qurʾān? Had it been from [someone] other than Allah, they would have surely found much discrepancy in it.
83
wa-ʾidhā jāʾahum ʾamrun mina l-ʾamni ʾawi l-khawfi ʾadhāʿū bihī wa-law raddūhu ʾilā r-rasūli wa-ʾilā ʾulī l-ʾamri minhum la-ʿalimahu lladhīna yastanbiṭūnahū minhum wa-law-lā faḍlu llāhi ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatuhū la-ttabaʿtumu sh-shayṭāna ʾillā qalīlan
When a report of safety or alarm comes to them, they immediately broadcast it; but had they referred it to the Apostle or to those vested with authority among them, those of them who investigate would have ascertained it. And were it not for Allah’s grace upon you and His mercy, you would have surely followed Satan, [all] except a few.
84
fa-qātil fī sabīli llāhi lā tukallafu ʾillā nafsaka wa-ḥarriḍi l-muʾminīna ʿasā llāhu ʾan yakuffa baʾsa lladhīna kafarū wa-llāhu ʾashaddu baʾsan wa-ʾashaddu tankīlan
So fight in the way of Allah: you are responsible only for yourself, but urge on the faithful [to fight]. Maybe Allah will curb the might of the faithless, for Allah is greatest in might and severest in punishment.
85
man yashfaʿ shafāʿatan ḥasanatan yakun lahū naṣībun minhā wa-man yashfaʿ shafāʿatan sayyiʾatan yakun lahū kiflun minhā wa-kāna llāhu ʿalā kulli shayʾin muqītan
Whoever intercedes for a good cause shall receive a share of it, and whoever intercedes for an evil cause shall share its burden, and Allah is prepotent over all things.
86
wa-ʾidhā ḥuyyītum bi-taḥiyyatin fa-ḥayyū bi-ʾaḥsana minhā ʾaw ruddūhā ʾinna llāha kāna ʿalā kulli shayʾin ḥasīban-i
When you are greeted with a salute, greet with a better one than it, or return it; indeed Allah takes account of all things.
87
allāhu lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa la-yajmaʿannakum ʾilā yawmi l-qiyāmati lā rayba fīhi wa-man ʾaṣdaqu mina llāhi ḥadīthan
Allah—there is no god except Him— will surely gather you on the Day of Resurrection, in which there is no doubt; and who is more truthful in speech than Allah?
88
fa-mā lakum fī l-munāfiqīna fiʾatayni wa-llāhu ʾarkasahum bi-mā kasabū ʾa-turīdūna ʾan tahdū man ʾaḍalla llāhu wa-man yuḍlili llāhu fa-lan tajida lahū sabīlan
Why should you be two groups concerning the hypocrites,1 while Allah has made them relapse because of their deeds? Do you desire to guide someone Allah has led astray? Whomever Allah leads astray, you will never find any way for him.A reference to the hypocrites of Makkah who feigned sympathy for the muslims while remaining in Makkah and continuing to work for their enemies.
89
waddū law takfurūna ka-mā kafarū fa-takūnūna sawāʾan fa-lā tattakhidhū minhum ʾawliyāʾa ḥattā yuhājirū fī sabīli llāhi fa-ʾin tawallaw fa-khudhūhum wa-qtulūhum ḥaythu wajadtumūhum wa-lā tattakhidhū minhum waliyyan wa-lā naṣīran
They are eager that you should disbelieve like they have disbelieved, so that you all become alike. So do not make friends [with anyone] from among them, until they migrate in the way of Allah. But if they turn their backs, seize them and kill them wherever you find them, and do not take from among them friends or helpers,

excepting those who join a people between whom and you there is a treaty, or such as come to you with hearts reluctant to fight you or to fight their own people. Had Allah wished, He would have imposed them upon you, and then they would have surely fought you. So if they keep out of your way and do not fight you, and offer you peace, then Allah does not allow you any course [of action] against them.

You will find others desiring to be secure from you, and secure from their own people; yet whenever they are called back to polytheism, they relapse into it. So if they do not keep out of your way, nor offer you peace, nor keep their hands off [from fighting], then seize them and kill them wherever you confront them, and it is such against whom We have given you a clear sanction.

A believer may not kill another believer, unless it is by mistake. Anyone who kills a believer by mistake should set free a believing slave, and pay blood-money to his family,1 unless they remit it in charity. If he2 belongs to a people that are hostile to you but is a believer, then a believing slave is to be set free. And if he belongs to a people with whom you have a treaty, the blood-money is to be paid to his family and a believing slave is to be set free. He who cannot afford [to pay the blood-money], must fast two successive months as a penance from Allah, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.That is, to the family of the victim. That is, the victim.

wa-man yaqtul muʾminan mutaʿammidan fa-jazāʾuhū jahannamu khālidan fīhā wa-ghaḍiba llāhu ʿalayhi wa-laʿanahū wa-ʾaʿadda lahū ʿadhāban ʿaẓīman
Should anyone kill a believer intentionally, his requital shall be hell, to remain in it [forever]; Allah shall be wrathful at him and curse him and He shall prepare for him a great punishment.
94
yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū ʾidhā ḍarabtum fī sabīli llāhi fa-tabayyanū wa-lā taqūlū li-man ʾalqā ʾilaykumu s-salāma lasta muʾminan tabtaghūna ʿaraḍa l-ḥayāti d-dunyā fa-ʿinda llāhi maghānimu kathīratun ka-dhālika kuntum min qablu fa-manna llāhu ʿalaykum fa-tabayyanū ʾinna llāha kāna bi-mā taʿmalūna khabīran
O you who have faith! When you issue forth in the way of Allah, try to ascertain: do not say to someone who offers you peace, ‘You are not a believer,’ seeking the transitory wares of the life of this world. Yet with Allah are plenteous gains. You too were such earlier, but Allah did you a favour. Therefore, do ascertain. Allah is indeed well aware of what you do.
95
lā yastawī l-qāʿidūna mina l-muʾminīna ghayru ʾulī ḍ-ḍarari wa-l-mujāhidūna fī sabīli llāhi bi-ʾamwālihim wa-ʾanfusihim faḍḍala llāhu l-mujāhidīna bi-ʾamwālihim wa-ʾanfusihim ʿalā l-qāʿidīna darajatan wa-kullan waʿada llāhu l-ḥusnā wa-faḍḍala llāhu l-mujāhidīna ʿalā l-qāʿidīna ʾajran ʿaẓīman
Not equal are those of the faithful who sit back —excepting those who suffer from some disability— and those who wage jihād in the way of Allah with their possession and their persons. Allah has graced those who wage jihād with their possessions and their persons by a degree over those who sit back; yet to each Allah has promised the best reward, and Allah has graced those who wage jihād over those who sit back with a great reward:
96
darajātin minhu wa-maghfiratan wa-raḥmatan wa-kāna llāhu ghafūran raḥīman
ranks from Him, forgiveness, and mercy, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
97
ʾinna lladhīna tawaffāhumu l-malāʾikatu ẓālimī ʾanfusihim qālū fī-ma kuntum qālū kunnā mustaḍʿafīna fī l-ʾarḍi qālū ʾa-lam takun ʾarḍu llāhi wāsiʿatan fa-tuhājirū fīhā fa-ʾulāʾika maʾwāhum jahannamu wa-sāʾat maṣīran
Indeed, those whom the angels take away while they are wronging themselves, they1 ask, ‘What state were you in?’ They reply, ‘We were abased in the land.’ They say, ‘Was not Allah’s earth vast enough so that you might migrate in it?’ The refuge of such shall be hell, and it is an evil destination. That is, the angels.
98
ʾillā l-mustaḍʿafīna mina r-rijāli wa-n-nisāʾi wa-l-wildāni lā yastaṭīʿūna ḥīlatan wa-lā yahtadūna sabīlan
Except the abased among men, women and children, who have neither access to any means nor are guided to any way.
99
fa-ʾulāʾika ʿasā llāhu ʾan yaʿfuwa ʿanhum wa-kāna llāhu ʿafuwwan ghafūran
Maybe Allah will excuse them, for Allah is all-excusing, all-forgiving.
100
wa-man yuhājir fī sabīli llāhi yajid fī l-ʾarḍi murāghaman kathīran wa-saʿatan wa-man yakhruj min baytihī muhājiran ʾilā llāhi wa-rasūlihī thumma yudrikhu l-mawtu fa-qad waqaʿa ʾajruhū ʿalā llāhi wa-kāna llāhu ghafūran raḥīman
Whoever migrates in the way of Allah will find many havens and plenitude in the earth. And whoever leaves his home migrating toward Allah and His Apostle, and is then overtaken by death, his reward shall certainly fall on Allah, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
101
wa-ʾidhā ḍarabtum fī l-ʾarḍi fa-laysa ʿalaykum junāḥun ʾan taqṣurū mina ṣ-ṣalāti ʾin khiftum ʾan yaftinakumu lladhīna kafarū ʾinna l-kāfirīna kānū lakum ʿaduwwan mubīnan
When you journey in the land, there is no sin upon you in shortening the prayers, if you fear that the faithless may trouble you; indeed the faithless are your manifest enemies.
102
wa-ʾidhā kunta fīhim fa-ʾaqamta lahumu ṣ-ṣalāta fa-l-taqum ṭāʾifatun minhum maʿaka wa-l-yaʾkhudhū ʾasliḥatahum fa-ʾidhā sajadū fa-l-yakūnū min warāʾikum wa-l-taʾti ṭāʾifatun ʾukhrā lam yuṣallū fa-l-yuṣallū maʿaka wa-l-yaʾkhudhū ḥidhrahum wa-ʾasliḥatahum wadda lladhīna kafarū law taghfulūna ʿan ʾasliḥatikum wa-ʾamtiʿatikum fa-yamīlūna ʿalaykum maylatan wāḥidatan wa-lā junāḥa ʿalaykum ʾin kāna bikum ʾadhan min maṭarin ʾaw kuntum marḍā ʾan taḍaʿū ʾasliḥatakum wa-khudhū ḥidhrakum ʾinna llāha ʾaʿadda li-l-kāfirīna ʿadhāban muhīnan
When you are among them, leading them in prayers, let a group of them stand with you carrying their weapons. And when they have done the prostrations, let them withdraw to the rear, then let the other group which has not prayed come and pray with you, taking their precautions and [bearing] their weapons. The faithless are eager that you should be oblivious of your weapons and your baggage, so that they could assault you all at once. But there is no sin upon you, if you are troubled by rain or are sick, to set aside your weapons; but take your precautions. Indeed Allah has prepared for the faithless a humiliating punishment.
103
fa-ʾidhā qaḍaytumu ṣ-ṣalāta fa-dhkurū llāha qiyāman wa-quʿūdan wa-ʿalā junūbikum fa-ʾidhā ṭmaʾnantum fa-ʾaqīmū ṣ-ṣalāta ʾinna ṣ-ṣalāta kānat ʿalā l-muʾminīna kitāban mawqūtan
When you have finished the prayers, remember Allah, standing, sitting and lying down, and when you feel secure, perform the [complete] prayers, for the prayer is indeed a timed prescription for the faithful.
104
wa-lā tahinū fī btighāʾi l-qawmi ʾin takūnū taʾlamūna fa-ʾinnahum yaʾlamūna ka-mā taʾlamūna wa-tarjūna mina llāhi mā lā yarjūna wa-kāna llāhu ʿalīman ḥakīman
Do not slacken in the pursuit of these people.1 If you are suffering, they are also suffering like you, but you expect from Allah what they do not expect, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.That is, the infidels.
105
ʾinnā ʾanzalnā ʾilayka l-kitāba bi-l-ḥaqqi li-taḥkuma bayna n-nāsi bi-mā ʾarāka llāhu wa-lā takun li-l-khāʾinīna khaṣīman
Indeed We have sent down to you the Book with the truth, so that you may judge between the people by what Allah has shown you; do not be an advocate for the traitors,
106
wa-staghfiri llāha ʾinna llāha kāna ghafūran raḥīman
and plead to Allah for forgiveness; indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
107
wa-lā tujādil ʿani lladhīna yakhtānūna ʾanfusahum ʾinna llāha lā yuḥibbu man kāna khawwānan ʾathīman
And do not plead for those who betray themselves; indeed Allah does not like someone who is treacherous and sinful.
108

They try to hide [their real character] from people, but they do not try to hide from Allah, though He is with them when they conspire overnight with a discourse that He does not approve of. And Allah comprehends whatever they do.
109
hā-ʾantum hāʾulāʾi jādaltum ʿanhum fī l-ḥayāti d-dunyā fa-man yujādilu llāha ʿanhum yawma l-qiyāmati ʾam man yakūnu ʿalayhim wakīlan
Aha! There you are, pleading for them in the life of this world! But who will plead for them with Allah on the Day of Resurrection, or will be their defender?
110
wa-man yaʿmal sūʾan ʾaw yaẓlim nafsahū thumma yastaghfiri llāha yajidi llāha ghafūran raḥīman
Whoever commits evil or wrongs himself and then pleads to Allah for forgiveness, will find Allah all-forgiving, all-merciful.
111
wa-man yaksib ʾithman fa-ʾinnamā yaksibuhū ʿalā nafsihī wa-kāna llāhu ʿalīman ḥakīman
And whoever commits a sin, commits it only against himself; and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
112
wa-man yaksib khaṭīʾatan ʾaw ʾithman thumma yarmi bihī barīʾan fa-qadi ḥtamala buhtānan wa-ʾithman mubīnan
But someone who commits an iniquity or sin and then accuses an innocent person of it, is indeed guilty of calumny and a flagrant sin.
113
wa-law-lā faḍlu llāhi ʿalayka wa-raḥmatuhū la-hammat ṭāʾifatun minhum ʾan yuḍillūka wa-mā yuḍillūna ʾillā ʾanfusahum wa-mā yaḍurrūnaka min shayʾin wa-ʾanzala llāhu ʿalayka l-kitāba wa-l-ḥikmata wa-ʿallamaka mā lam takun taʿlamu wa-kāna faḍlu llāhi ʿalayka ʿaẓīman
Were it not for Allah’s grace and His mercy on you, a group of them were bent on leading you astray; but they do not mislead anyone except themselves, and they cannot do you any harm. Allah has sent down to you the Book and wisdom, and He has taught you what you did not know, and great is Allah’s grace upon you.
114
lā khayra fī kathīrin min najwāhum ʾillā man ʾamara bi-ṣadaqatin ʾaw maʿrūfin ʾaw ʾiṣlāḥin bayna n-nāsi wa-man yafʿal dhālika btighāʾa marḍāti llāhi fa-sawfa nuʾtīhi ʾajran ʿaẓīman
There is no good in much of their secret talks, excepting him who enjoins charity or what is right or reconciliation between people, and whoever does that, seeking Allah’s pleasure, soon We shall give him a great reward.
115
wa-man yushāqiqi r-rasūla min baʿdi mā tabayyana lahu l-hudā wa-yattabiʿ ghayra sabīli l-muʾminīna nuwallihī mā tawallā wa-nuṣlihī jahannama wa-sāʾat maṣīran
But whoever defies the Apostle, after the guidance has become manifest to him, and follows a way other than that of the faithful, We shall abandon him to his devices and We shall make him enter hell, and it is an evil destination.
116
ʾinna llāha lā yaghfiru ʾan yushraka bihī wa-yaghfiru mā dūna dhālika li-man yashāʾu wa-man yushrik bi-llāhi fa-qad ḍalla ḍalālan baʿīdan
Indeed Allah does not forgive that any partner should be ascribed to Him, but He forgives anything besides that to whomever He wishes. And whoever ascribes partners to Allah has certainly strayed into far error.
117
ʾin yadʿūna min dūnihī ʾillā ʾināthan wa-ʾin yadʿūna ʾillā shayṭānan marīdan
They invoke none but females1 besides Him, and invoke none but a froward Satan,Most of the idols and deities worshipped by Arab pagans had female names, e.g. Lāt, Manāt, ʿUzzā, Nāʾilah, etc.
118
laʿanahu llāhu wa-qāla la-ʾattakhidhanna min ʿibādika naṣīban mafrūḍan
whom Allah has cursed, and who said, ‘I will surely take of Your servants a settled share,
119
wa-la-ʾuḍillannahum wa-la-ʾumanniyannahum wa-la-ʾāmurannahum fa-la-yubattikunna ʾādhāna l-ʾanʿāmi wa-la-ʾāmurannahum fa-la-yughayyirunna khalqa llāhi wa-man yattakhidhi sh-shayṭāna waliyyan min dūni llāhi fa-qad khasira khusrānan mubīnan
and I will lead them astray and give them [false] hopes, and prompt them to slit the ears of cattle,1 and I will prompt them to alter Allah’s creation.’ Whoever takes Satan as a guardian instead of Allah has certainly incurred a manifest loss. This refers to the pagan practice of slitting the ears of camels as a sign of their dedication to pagan deities.
120
yaʿiduhum wa-yumannīhim wa-mā yaʿiduhumu sh-shayṭānu ʾillā ghurūran
He makes them promises and gives them [false] hopes, yet Satan does not promise them anything but delusion.
121
ʾulāʾika maʾwāhum jahannamu wa-lā yajidūna ʿanhā maḥīṣan
The refuge of such shall be hell, and they will not find any escape from it.
122
wa-lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti sa-nudkhiluhum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru khālidīna fīhā ʾabadan waʿda llāhi ḥaqqan wa-man ʾaṣdaqu mina llāhi qīlan
But those who have faith and do righteous deeds, We will admit them into gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them forever —a true promise of Allah, and who is truer in speech than Allah?
123
laysa bi-ʾamāniyyikum wa-lā ʾamāniyyi ʾahli l-kitābi man yaʿmal sūʾan yujza bihī wa-lā yajid lahū min dūni llāhi waliyyan wa-lā naṣīran
It will be neither after your hopes nor the hopes of the People of the Book: whoever commits evil shall be requited for it, and he will not find for himself any guardian or helper besides Allah.
124
wa-man yaʿmal mina ṣ-ṣāliḥāti min dhakarin ʾaw ʾunthā wa-huwa muʾminun fa-ʾulāʾika yadkhulūna l-jannata wa-lā yuẓlamūna naqīran
And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, should he be faithful —such shall enter paradise and they will not be wronged [so much as] the speck on a date-stone.
125
wa-man ʾaḥsanu dīnan mimman ʾaslama wajhahū li-llāhi wa-huwa muḥsinun wa-ttabaʿa millata ʾibrāhīma ḥanīfan wa-ttakhadha llāhu ʾibrāhīma khalīlan
And who has a better religion than him who submits his will to Allah, being virtuous, and follows the creed of Abraham, a ḥanīf? And Allah took Abraham for a dedicated friend.
126
wa-li-llāhi mā fī s-samāwāti wa-mā fī l-ʾarḍi wa-kāna llāhu bi-kulli shayʾin muḥīṭan
To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah comprehends all things.
127
wa-yastaftūnaka fī n-nisāʾi quli llāhu yuftīkum fīhinna wa-mā yutlā ʿalaykum fī l-kitābi fī yatāmā n-nisāʾi llātī lā tuʾtūnahunna mā kutiba lahunna wa-targhabūna ʾan tankiḥūhunna wa-l-mustaḍʿafīna mina l-wildāni wa-ʾan taqūmū li-l-yatāmā bi-l-qisṭi wa-mā tafʿalū min khayrin fa-ʾinna llāha kāna bihī ʿalīman
They seek your ruling concerning women. Say, ‘Allah gives you a ruling concerning them and what is announced to you in the Book concerning girl orphans —whom you do not give what has been prescribed for them, and yet you desire to marry them— and about the weak among children: that you should maintain the orphans with justice, and whatever good you do, indeed Allah knows it well.
128
wa-ʾini mraʾatun khāfat min baʿlihā nushūzan ʾaw ʾiʿrāḍan fa-lā junāḥa ʿalayhimā ʾan yuṣliḥā baynahumā ṣulḥan wa-ṣ-ṣulḥu khayrun wa-ʾuḥḍirati l-ʾanfusu sh-shuḥḥa wa-ʾin tuḥsinū wa-tattaqū fa-ʾinna llāha kāna bi-mā taʿmalūna khabīran
If a woman fears from her husband misconduct or desertion, there is no sin upon the couple if they reach a reconciliation between themselves; and reconcilement is better. The souls are prone to greed; but if you are virtuous and Godwary, Allah is indeed well aware of what you do.
129
wa-lan tastaṭīʿū ʾan taʿdilū bayna n-nisāʾi wa-law ḥaraṣtum fa-lā tamīlū kulla l-mayli fa-tadharūhā ka-l-muʿallaqati wa-ʾin tuṣliḥū wa-tattaqū fa-ʾinna llāha kāna ghafūran raḥīman
You will not be able to be fair between wives, even if you are eager to do so. Yet do not turn away from one altogether, leaving her as if in a suspense. But if you are conciliatory and Godwary, Allah is indeed all-forgiving, all-merciful.
130
wa-ʾin yatafarraqā yughni llāhu kullan min saʿatihī wa-kāna llāhu wāsiʿan ḥakīman
But if they separate, Allah will suffice each of them out of His bounty, and Allah is all-bounteous, all-wise.
131
wa-li-llāhi mā fī s-samāwāti wa-mā fī l-ʾarḍi wa-la-qad waṣṣaynā lladhīna ʾūtū l-kitāba min qablikum wa-ʾiyyākum ʾani ttaqū llāha wa-ʾin takfurū fa-ʾinna li-llāhi mā fī s-samāwāti wa-mā fī l-ʾarḍi wa-kāna llāhu ghaniyyan ḥamīdan
To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. We have certainly enjoined those who were given the Book before you, and you, that you should be wary of Allah. But if you are faithless, [you should know that] to Allah indeed belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah is all-sufficient, all-laudable.
132
wa-li-llāhi mā fī s-samāwāti wa-mā fī l-ʾarḍi wa-kafā bi-llāhi wakīlan
To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah suffices as trustee.
133
ʾin yashaʾ yudhhibkum ʾayyuhā n-nāsu wa-yaʾti bi-ʾākharīna wa-kāna llāhu ʿalā dhālika qadīran
If He wishes, He will take you away, O mankind, and bring others [in your place]; Allah has the power to do that.
134
man kāna yurīdu thawāba d-dunyā fa-ʿinda llāhi thawābu d-dunyā wa-l-ʾākhirati wa-kāna llāhu samīʿan baṣīran
Whoever desires the reward of this world, [should know that] with Allah is the reward of this world and the Hereafter, and Allah is all-hearing, all-seeing.
135
yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū kūnū qawwāmīna bi-l-qisṭi shuhadāʾa li-llāhi wa-law ʿalā ʾanfusikum ʾawi l-wālidayni wa-l-ʾaqrabīna ʾin yakun ghaniyyan ʾaw faqīran fa-llāhu ʾawlā bihimā fa-lā tattabiʿū l-hawā ʾan taʿdilū wa-ʾin talwū ʾaw tuʿriḍū fa-ʾinna llāha kāna bi-mā taʿmalūna khabīran
O you who have faith! Be maintainers of justice and witnesses for the sake of Allah, even if it should be against yourselves or [your] parents and near relatives, and whether it be [someone] rich or poor, for Allah has a greater right over them. So do not follow [your] desires, lest you should be unfair, and if you distort [the testimony] or disregard [it], Allah is indeed well aware of what you do.
136
yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū ʾāminū bi-llāhi wa-rasūlihī wa-l-kitābi lladhī nazzala ʿalā rasūlihī wa-l-kitābi lladhī ʾanzala min qablu wa-man yakfur bi-llāhi wa-malāʾikatihī wa-kutubihī wa-rusulihī wa-l-yawmi l-ʾākhiri fa-qad ḍalla ḍalālan baʿīdan
O you who have faith! Have faith in Allah and His Apostle and the Book that He has sent down to His Apostle and the Book He had sent down earlier. Whoever disbelieves in Allah and His angels, His Books and His apostles and the Last Day, has certainly strayed into far error.
137
ʾinna lladhīna ʾāmanū thumma kafarū thumma ʾāmanū thumma kafarū thumma zdādū kufran lam yakuni llāhu li-yaghfira lahum wa-lā li-yahdiyahum sabīlan
As for those who believe and then disbelieve, then believe [again] and then disbelieve and then increase in disbelief, Allah shall never forgive them, nor shall He guide them to any way.
138
bashshiri l-munāfiqīna bi-ʾanna lahum ʿadhāban ʾalīman-i
Inform the hypocrites that there is a painful punishment for them
139
alladhīna yattakhidhūna l-kāfirīna ʾawliyāʾa min dūni l-muʾminīna ʾa-yabtaghūna ʿindahumu l-ʿizzata fa-ʾinna l-ʿizzata li-llāhi jamīʿan
—those who take the faithless for allies instead of the faithful. Do they seek honour with them? [If so,] indeed all honour belongs to Allah.
140
wa-qad nazzala ʿalaykum fī l-kitābi ʾan ʾidhā samiʿtum ʾāyāti llāhi yukfaru bihā wa-yustahzaʾu bihā fa-lā taqʿudū maʿahum ḥattā yakhūḍū fī ḥadīthin ghayrihī ʾinnakum ʾidhan mithluhum ʾinna llāha jāmiʿu l-munāfiqīna wa-l-kāfirīna fī jahannama jamīʿan-i
Certainly He has sent down to you in the Book that when you hear Allah’s signs being disbelieved and derided, do not sit with them until they engage in some other discourse, or else you [too] will be like them. Indeed Allah will gather the hypocrites and the faithless in hell all together.
141
alladhīna yatarabbaṣūna bikum fa-ʾin kāna lakum fatḥun mina llāhi qālū ʾa-lam nakun maʿakum wa-ʾin kāna li-l-kāfirīna naṣībun qālū ʾa-lam nastaḥwidh ʿalaykum wa-namnaʿkum mina l-muʾminīna fa-llāhu yaḥkumu baynakum yawma l-qiyāmati wa-lan yajʿala llāhu li-l-kāfirīna ʿalā l-muʾminīna sabīlan
—Those who lie in wait for you: if there is a victory for you from Allah, they say, ‘Were we not with you?’ But if the faithless get a share [of victory], they say, ‘Did we not prevail upon you and defend you against the faithful?’ Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will never provide the faithless any way [to prevail] over the faithful.
142
ʾinna l-munāfiqīna yukhādiʿūna llāha wa-huwa khādiʿuhum wa-ʾidhā qāmū ʾilā ṣ-ṣalāti qāmū kusālā yurāʾūna n-nāsa wa-lā yadhkurūna llāha ʾillā qalīlan
The hypocrites indeed seek to deceive Allah, but it is He who outwits them. When they stand up for prayer, they stand up lazily, showing off to the people and not remembering Allah except a little,
143
mudhabdhabīna bayna dhālika lā ʾilā hāʾulāʾi wa-lā ʾilā hāʾulāʾi wa-man yuḍlili llāhu fa-lan tajida lahū sabīlan
wavering in between: neither with these nor with those. And whomever Allah leads astray, you will never find any way for him.
144
yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū lā tattakhidhū l-kāfirīna ʾawliyāʾa min dūni l-muʾminīna ʾa-turīdūna ʾan tajʿalū li-llāhi ʿalaykum sulṭānan mubīnan
O you who have faith! Do not take the faithless for friends instead of the faithful. Do you wish to give Allah a clear sanction against yourselves?
145
ʾinna l-munāfiqīna fī d-darki l-ʾasfali mina n-nāri wa-lan tajida lahum naṣīran
Indeed the hypocrites will be in the lowest reach of the Fire, and you will never find any helper for them,
146
ʾillā lladhīna tābū wa-ʾaṣlaḥū wa-ʿtaṣamū bi-llāhi wa-ʾakhlaṣū dīnahum li-llāhi fa-ʾulāʾika maʿa l-muʾminīna wa-sawfa yuʾti llāhu l-muʾminīna ʾajran ʿaẓīman
except for those who repent and reform, and hold fast to Allah and dedicate their religion [exclusively] to Allah. Those are with the faithful, and soon Allah will give the faithful a great reward.
147
mā yafʿalu llāhu bi-ʿadhābikum ʾin shakartum wa-ʾāmantum wa-kāna llāhu shākiran ʿalīman
Why should Allah punish you if you give thanks and be faithful? And Allah is appreciative, all-knowing.
148
lā yuḥibbu llāhu l-jahra bi-s-sūʾi mina l-qawli ʾillā man ẓulima wa-kāna llāhu samīʿan ʿalīman
Allah does not like the disclosure of [anyone’s] evil [conduct] in speech except by someone who has been wronged, and Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.
149
ʾin tubdū khayran ʾaw tukhfūhu ʾaw taʿfū ʿan sūʾin fa-ʾinna llāha kāna ʿafuwwan qadīran
Whether you disclose a good [deed that you do] or hide it, or excuse an evil [deed], Allah is indeed all-excusing, all-powerful.
150
ʾinna lladhīna yakfurūna bi-llāhi wa-rusulihī wa-yurīdūna ʾan yufarriqū bayna llāhi wa-rusulihī wa-yaqūlūna nuʾminu bi-baʿḍin wa-nakfuru bi-baʿḍin wa-yurīdūna ʾan yattakhidhū bayna dhālika sabīlan
Those who disbelieve in Allah and His apostles and seek to separate Allah from His apostles, and say, ‘We believe in some and disbelieve in some’ and seek to take a way in between
151
ʾulāʾika humu l-kāfirūna ḥaqqan wa-ʾaʿtadnā li-l-kāfirīna ʿadhāban muhīnan
—it is they who are truly faithless, and We have prepared for the faithless a humiliating punishment.
152
wa-lladhīna ʾāmanū bi-llāhi wa-rusulihī wa-lam yufarriqū bayna ʾaḥadin minhum ʾulāʾika sawfa yuʾtīhim ʾujūrahum wa-kāna llāhu ghafūran raḥīman
But those who have faith in Allah and His apostles and make no distinction between any of them —them He will soon give their rewards, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
153
yasʾaluka ʾahlu l-kitābi ʾan tunazzila ʿalayhim kitāban mina s-samāʾi fa-qad saʾalū mūsā ʾakbara min dhālika fa-qālū ʾarinā llāha jahratan fa-ʾakhadhathumu ṣ-ṣāʿiqatu bi-ẓulmihim thumma ttakhadhū l-ʿijla min baʿdi mā jāʾathumu l-bayyinātu fa-ʿafawnā ʿan dhālika wa-ʾātaynā mūsā sulṭānan mubīnan
The People of the Book ask you to bring down for them a Book from the sky. Certainly they asked Moses for [something] greater than that, for they said, ‘Show us Allah visibly,’ whereat a thunderbolt seized them for their wrongdoing. Then they took up the Calf [for worship], after all the manifest proofs that had come to them. Yet We excused that, and We gave Moses a manifest authority.
154
wa-rafaʿnā fawqahumu ṭ-ṭūra bi-mīthāqihim wa-qulnā lahumu dkhulū l-bāba sujjadan wa-qulnā lahum lā taʿdū fī s-sabti wa-ʾakhadhnā minhum mīthāqan ghalīẓan
And We raised the Mount above them for the sake of their covenant, and We said to them, ‘Enter the gate prostrating’ and We said to them, ‘Do not violate the Sabbath,’ and We took from them a solemn covenant.
155
fa-bi-mā naqḍihim mīthāqahum wa-kufrihim bi-ʾāyāti llāhi wa-qatlihimu l-ʾanbiyāʾa bi-ghayri ḥaqqin wa-qawlihim qulūbunā ghulfun bal ṭabaʿa llāhu ʿalayhā bi-kufrihim fa-lā yuʾminūna ʾillā qalīlan
Then because of their breaking their covenant, their defiance of Allah’s signs, their killing of the prophets unjustly and for their saying, ‘Our hearts are uncircumcised.’1 Rather Allah has set a seal on them2 for their unfaith, so they do not have faith except a few.Ellipsis. The phrase omitted is: ‘We cursed them.’ Cf. 2:88; 5:13.That is, on their hearts.
156
wa-bi-kufrihim wa-qawlihim ʿalā maryama buhtānan ʿaẓīman
And for their faithlessness, and their uttering a monstrous calumny against Mary,
157
wa-qawlihim ʾinnā qatalnā l-masīḥa ʿīsā bna maryama rasūla llāhi wa-mā qatalūhu wa-mā ṣalabūhu wa-lākin shubbiha lahum wa-ʾinna lladhīna khtalafū fīhi la-fī shakkin minhu mā lahum bihī min ʿilmin ʾillā ttibāʿa ẓ-ẓanni wa-mā qatalūhu yaqīnan
and for their saying, ‘We killed the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the apostle of Allah’ —though they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but so it was made to appear to them. Indeed those who differ concerning him1 are surely in doubt about him:2 they do not have any knowledge of that beyond following conjectures, and certainly they did not kill him.Or ‘it.’Or ‘it.’
158
bal rafaʿahu llāhu ʾilayhi wa-kāna llāhu ʿazīzan ḥakīman
Rather Allah raised him up toward Himself, and Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.1See verse 3:55 and the related footnote.
159
wa-ʾin min ʾahli l-kitābi ʾillā la-yuʾminanna bihī qabla mawtihī wa-yawma l-qiyāmati yakūnu ʿalayhim shahīdan
There is none among the People of the Book but will surely believe in him before his death; and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them.1That is, every Jew or Christian, before dying, will believe in the Prophet Muḥammad (ṣ), or, according to another interpretation, in Jesus (ʿa).
160
fa-bi-ẓulmin mina lladhīna hādū ḥarramnā ʿalayhim ṭayyibātin ʾuḥillat lahum wa-bi-ṣaddihim ʿan sabīli llāhi kathīran
Due to the wrongdoing of the Jews, We prohibited them certain good things that were permitted to them[earlier], and for their barring many [people] from the way of Allah,
161
wa-ʾakhdhihimu r-ribā wa-qad nuhū ʿanhu wa-ʾaklihim ʾamwāla n-nāsi bi-l-bāṭili wa-ʾaʿtadnā li-l-kāfirīna minhum ʿadhāban ʾalīman
and for their taking usury —though they had been forbidden from it— and for eating up the wealth of the people wrongfully. And We have prepared for the faithless among them a painful punishment.
162
lākini r-rāsikhūna fī l-ʿilmi minhum wa-l-muʾminūna yuʾminūna bi-mā ʾunzila ʾilayka wa-mā ʾunzila min qablika wa-l-muqīmīna ṣ-ṣalāta wa-l-muʾtūna z-zakāta wa-l-muʾminūna bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ʾākhiri ʾulāʾika sa-nuʾtīhim ʾajran ʿaẓīman
But as for those who are firmly grounded in knowledge from among them, and the faithful, they believe in what has been sent down to you, and what was sent down before you —those who maintain the prayer, give the zakāt, and believe in Allah and the Last Day —them We shall give a great reward.
163
ʾinnā ʾawḥaynā ʾilayka ka-mā ʾawḥaynā ʾilā nūḥin wa-n-nabiyyīna min baʿdihī wa-ʾawḥaynā ʾilā ʾibrāhīma wa-ʾismāʿīla wa-ʾisḥāqa wa-yaʿqūba wa-l-ʾasbāṭi wa-ʿīsā wa-ʾayyūba wa-yūnusa wa-hārūna wa-sulaymāna wa-ʾātaynā dāwūda zabūran
We have indeed revealed to you as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him, and [as] We revealed to Abraham and Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, Jesus and Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, —and We gave David the Psalms—
164
wa-rusulan qad qaṣaṣnāhum ʿalayka min qablu wa-rusulan lam naqṣuṣhum ʿalayka wa-kallama llāhu mūsā taklīman
and apostles We have recounted to you earlier and apostles We have not recounted to you, —and to Moses Allah spoke directly—
165
rusulan mubashshirīna wa-mundhirīna li-ʾallā yakūna li-n-nāsi ʿalā llāhi ḥujjatun baʿda r-rusuli wa-kāna llāhu ʿazīzan ḥakīman
apostles, as bearers of good news and warners, so that mankind may not have any argument against Allah, after the [sending of the] apostles; and Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.
166
lākini llāhu yashhadu bi-mā ʾanzala ʾilayka ʾanzalahū bi-ʿilmihī wa-l-malāʾikatu yashhadūna wa-kafā bi-llāhi shahīdan
But Allah bears witness to what He has sent down to you —He sent it down with His knowledge— and the angels bear witness [too], and Allah quite suffices as a witness.
167
ʾinna lladhīna kafarū wa-ṣaddū ʿan sabīli llāhi qad ḍallū ḍalālan baʿīdan
Indeed those who are faithless and bar [others] from the way of Allah, have certainly strayed into far error.
168
ʾinna lladhīna kafarū wa-ẓalamū lam yakuni llāhu li-yaghfira lahum wa-lā li-yahdiyahum ṭarīqan
Indeed those who are faithless and do wrong, Allah shall never forgive them, nor shall He guide them to any way,
169
ʾillā ṭarīqa jahannama khālidīna fīhā ʾabadan wa-kāna dhālika ʿalā llāhi yasīran
except the way to hell, to remain in it forever, and that is easy for Allah.
170
yā-ʾayyuhā n-nāsu qad jāʾakumu r-rasūlu bi-l-ḥaqqi min rabbikum fa-ʾāminū khayran lakum wa-ʾin takfurū fa-ʾinna li-llāhi mā fī s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi wa-kāna llāhu ʿalīman ḥakīman
O mankind! The Apostle has certainly brought you the truth from your Lord. So have faith! That is better for you. And if you are faithless, [you should know that] to Allah indeed belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
171
yā-ʾahla l-kitābi lā taghlū fī dīnikum wa-lā taqūlū ʿalā llāhi ʾillā l-ḥaqqa ʾinnamā l-masīḥu ʿīsā bnu maryama rasūlu llāhi wa-kalimatuhū ʾalqāhā ʾilā maryama wa-rūḥun minhu fa-ʾāminū bi-llāhi wa-rusulihī wa-lā taqūlū thalāthatun-i ntahū khayran lakum ʾinnamā llāhu ʾilāhun wāḥidun subḥānahū ʾan yakūna lahū waladun lahū mā fī s-samāwāti wa-mā fī l-ʾarḍi wa-kafā bi-llāhi wakīlan
O People of the Book! Do not exceed the bounds in your religion, and do not attribute anything to Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only an apostle of Allah, and His Word that He cast toward Mary and a spirit from Him. So have faith in Allah and His apostles, and do not say, ‘[God is] a trinity.’ Relinquish [such a creed]! That is better for you. Allah is but the One God. He is far too immaculate to have any son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah suffices as trustee.
172
lan yastankifa l-masīḥu ʾan yakūna ʿabdan li-llāhi wa-lā l-malāʾikatu l-muqarrabūna wa-man yastankif ʿan ʿibādatihī wa-yastakbir fa-sa-yaḥshuruhum ʾilayhi jamīʿan
The Messiah would never disdain being a servant of Allah, nor would the angels brought near [to Him]. And whoever disdains His worship and is arrogant, He will gather them all toward Him.
173
fa-ʾammā lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti fa-yuwaffīhim ʾujūrahum wa-yazīduhum min faḍlihī wa-ʾammā lladhīna stankafū wa-stakbarū fa-yuʿadhdhibuhum ʿadhāban ʾalīman wa-lā yajidūna lahum min dūni llāhi waliyyan wa-lā naṣīran
As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, He will pay them in full their rewards, and He will enhance them out of His grace. But those who are disdainful and arrogant, He will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will not find besides Allah any guardian or helper.
174
yā-ʾayyuhā n-nāsu qad jāʾakum burhānun min rabbikum wa-ʾanzalnā ʾilaykum nūran mubīnan
O mankind! Certainly a proof1 has come to you from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a manifest light.2That is, the Prophet Muḥammad (ṣ), or the Qurʾān.The Qurʾān, according to Mujāhid, Qatādah and Suddī. The wilāyah of Imām ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (ʿa) according to traditions from Imām Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad al-Ṣādiq (ʿa) and Imām Muḥammad al-Bāqir (ʿa). See the commentaries of Furāt al-Kūfī and al-ʿAyyāshī under this verse.
175
fa-ʾammā lladhīna ʾāmanū bi-llāhi wa-ʿtaṣamū bihī fa-sa-yudkhiluhum fī raḥmatin minhu wa-faḍlin wa-yahdīhim ʾilayhi ṣirāṭan mustaqīman
As for those who have faith in Allah, and hold fast to Him, He will admit them to His mercy and grace, and He will guide them on a straight path to Him.
176

They ask you for a ruling. Say, ‘Allah gives you a ruling concerning the kalālah:1 If a man dies and he has no children [or parents], but has a sister, for her shall be a half of what he leaves, and he shall inherit from her if she has no children. If there be two sisters, then they shall receive two-thirds of what he leaves. But if there be [several] brothers and sisters, then for the male shall be the like of the share of two females. Allah explains [the laws] for you lest you should go astray, and Allah has knowledge of all things.’See the footnote at verse 4:12 above.
