The surah that mentions The Throngs of the unbelievers who shall be driven to Hell in the Hereafter, and the companies of the God-fearing who shall be ushered to Paradise in honour. It takes its name from verse 71 and verse 73 in which the word “throngs” (zumar) occurs. The main focus of the surah is the contrast between those who follow the true faith, and those who ascribe partners to God. The surah emphasizes that people are free to choose whether to believe or disbelieve (verse 41), but urges them in the strongest possible terms to turn to the right path while there is still time to repent (verse 53 .).The surah is also known as: The Companies, The Crowds, The Multitudes, The Small Groups.

tanzīlu l-kitābi mina llāhi l-ʿazīzi l-ḥakīmi
The [gradual] sending down of the Book is from Allah, the All-mighty, the All-wise.
2
ʾinnā ʾanzalnā ʾilayka l-kitāba bi-l-ḥaqqi fa-ʿbudi llāha mukhliṣan lahu d-dīna
Indeed We have sent down the Book to you with the truth; so worship Allah, putting exclusive faith1 in Him.Or ‘pure faith.’
3
ʾa-lā li-llāhi d-dīnu l-khāliṣu wa-lladhīna ttakhadhū min dūnihī ʾawliyāʾa mā naʿbuduhum ʾillā li-yuqarribūnā ʾilā llāhi zulfā ʾinna llāha yaḥkumu baynahum fī mā hum fīhi yakhtalifūna ʾinna llāha lā yahdī man huwa kādhibun kaffārun
Look! [Only] exclusive faith is worthy of Allah, and those who take guardians besides Him [claiming,] ‘We only worship them so that they may bring us near to Allah,’ Allah will indeed judge between them concerning that about which they differ. Indeed Allah does not guide someone who is a liar and an ingrate.
4
law ʾarāda llāhu ʾan yattakhidha waladan la-ṣṭafā mimmā yakhluqu mā yashāʾu subḥānahū huwa llāhu l-wāḥidu l-qahhāru
Had Allah intended to take a son, He could have chosen from those He has created whatever He wished. Immaculate is He! He is Allah, the One, the All-paramount.
5

He created the heavens and the earth with reason. He winds the night over the day, and winds the day over the night, and He has disposed the sun and the moon, each moving for a specified term.1 Look! He is the All-mighty, the All-forgiver!Or ‘until a specified time.’
6

He created you from a single soul, then made from it its mate, and He has sent down for you eight mates of the cattle.1 He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, in a threefold darkness. That is Allah, your Lord! To Him belongs all sovereignty. There is no god except Him. Then where are you being led away?Cf. 6:143.
7
ʾin takfurū fa-ʾinna llāha ghaniyyun ʿankum wa-lā yarḍā li-ʿibādihi l-kufra wa-ʾin tashkurū yarḍahu lakum wa-lā taziru wāziratun wizra ʾukhrā thumma ʾilā rabbikum marjiʿukum fa-yunabbiʾukum bi-mā kuntum taʿmalūna ʾinnahū ʿalīmun bi-dhāti ṣ-ṣudūri
If you are ungrateful,1 indeed Allah has no need of you, though He does not approve ingratitude for His servants; and if you give thanks He approves that for you. No bearer shall bear another’s burden; then to your Lord will be your return, whereat He will inform you concerning what you used to do. Indeed He knows best what is in the breasts.Or ‘faithless.’

When distress befalls man, he supplicates his Lord, turning to Him penitently. Then, when He grants him a blessing from Himself, he forgets that for which he had supplicated Him before,1 and sets up equals to Allah that he may lead [people] astray from His way. Say, ‘Revel in your ingratitude2 for a while. Indeed you are among the inmates of the Fire.’Cf. 6:41.Or ‘faithlessness.’

The omitted phrase is, ‘like someone who is not such?’
10

Say, ‘[Allah declares:] “O My servants who have faith! Be wary of your Lord. For those who do good in this world there will be a good [reward], and Allah’s earth is vast. Indeed the patient will be paid in full their reward without any reckoning.” ’
11
qul ʾinnī ʾumirtu ʾan ʾaʿbuda llāha mukhliṣan lahu d-dīna

quli llāha ʾaʿbudu mukhliṣan lahū dīnī
Say, ‘[Only] Allah do I worship, putting my exclusive faith in Him.
15

16
lahum min fawqihim ẓulalun mina n-nāri wa-min taḥtihim ẓulalun dhālika yukhawwifu llāhu bihī ʿibādahū yā-ʿibādi fa-ttaqūni
There will be canopies of fire above them, and [similar] canopies beneath them. With that Allah deters His servants. So, My servants, be wary of Me!
17
wa-lladhīna jtanabū ṭ-ṭāghūta ʾan yaʿbudūhā wa-ʾanābū ʾilā llāhi lahumu l-bushrā fa-bashshir ʿibādi
As for those who stay clear of the worship of the Rebel and turn penitently to Allah, there is good news for them. So give good news to My servants
18

who listen to the word [of Allah] and follow the best [sense] of it. They are the ones whom Allah has guided, and it is they who possess intellect.
19
ʾa-fa-man ḥaqqa ʿalayhi kalimatu l-ʿadhābi ʾa-fa ʾanta tunqidhu man fī n-nāri
Can he against whom the word of punishment has become due?1 Can you rescue someone who is in the Fire?Ellipsis; the omitted phrase is, ‘escape his punishment?’
20

But as for those who are wary of their Lord, for them there will be lofty abodes with [other] lofty abodes built above them, with streams running beneath them —a promise of Allah. Allah does not break His promise.
21

Have you not seen that Allah sends down water from the sky, then He conducts it through the ground as springs. Then with it He brings forth crops of diverse hues. Then they wither and you see them turn yellow. Then He turns them into chaff. There is indeed an admonition in that for those who possess intellect.
22

Allah has sent down the best of discourses, a scripture [composed] of similar1 motifs, whereat quiver the skins of those who fear their Lord, then their skins and hearts soften to Allah’s remembrance. That is Allah’s guidance, by which He guides whomever He wishes; and whomever Allah leads astray, has no guide.Or ‘parallel motifs.’
24
ʾa-fa-man yattaqī bi-wajhihī sūʾa l-ʿadhābi yawma l-qiyāmati wa-qīla li-ẓ-ẓālimīna dhūqū mā kuntum taksibūna
What! Is someone who fends off with his face the terrible punishment [meted out to him] on the Day of Resurrection?1 And the wrongdoers will be told, ‘Taste what you used to earn.’Ellipsis. The omitted phrase is, ‘like someone who is secure from any kind of punishment?’
25
kadhdhaba lladhīna min qablihim fa-ʾatāhumu l-ʿadhābu min ḥaythu lā yashʿurūna
Those who were before them impugned [the apostles], whereat the punishment overtook them whence they were not aware.
26
fa-ʾadhāqahumu llāhu l-khizya fī l-ḥayāti d-dunyā wa-la-ʿadhābu l-ʾākhirati ʾakbaru law kānū yaʿlamūna
So Allah made them taste disgrace in the life of the world, and the punishment of the Hereafter will surely be greater, had they known.
27

Certainly we have drawn for mankind in this Qurʾān every [kind of] example, so that they may take admonition
28
qurʾānan ʿarabiyyan ghayra dhī ʿiwajin laʿallahum yattaqūna
—an Arabic Qurʾān, without any deviousness, so that they may be Godwary.
29
ḍaraba llāhu mathalan rajulan fīhi shurakāʾu mutashākisūna wa-rajulan salaman li-rajulin hal yastawiyāni mathalan-i l-ḥamdu li-llāhi bal ʾaktharuhum lā yaʿlamūna
Allah draws an example: a man jointly owned by several contending masters, and a man belonging entirely to one man: are the two equal in comparison?1 All praise belongs to Allah! But most of them do not know. The parable compares the polytheist with the monotheist. The worshipper of multiple deities is likened to a slave trying to please several masters.
30
ʾinnaka mayyitun wa-ʾinnahum mayyitūna
You will indeed die, and they [too] will die indeed.
31
thumma ʾinnakum yawma l-qiyāmati ʿinda rabbikum takhtaṣimūna
Then on the Day of Resurrection you will indeed contend before your Lord.
32
fa-man ʾaẓlamu mimman kadhaba ʿalā llāhi wa-kadhdhaba bi-ṣ-ṣidqi ʾidh jāʾahū ʾa-laysa fī jahannama mathwan li-l-kāfirīna
So who is a greater wrongdoer than him who attributes a falsehood to Allah, and denies the truth when it reaches him? Is not the [final] abode of the faithless in hell?
33
wa-lladhī jāʾa bi-ṣ-ṣidqi wa-ṣaddaqa bihī ʾulāʾika humu l-muttaqūna
He who brings the truth and he who confirms it —it is they who are the Godwary.
34

so that Allah may absolve them of the worst of what they did, and pay them their reward by the best of what they used to do.
36
ʾa-laysa llāhu bi-kāfin ʿabdahū wa-yukhawwifūnaka bi-lladhīna min dūnihī wa-man yuḍlili llāhu fa-mā lahū min hādin
Does not Allah suffice [to defend] His servant? They1 would frighten you of others than Him. Yet whomever Allah leads astray, has no guide,That is, the idolaters, who threatened the Prophet with the vengeance of their gods.
37
wa-man yahdi llāhu fa-mā lahū min muḍillin ʾa-laysa llāhu bi-ʿazīzin dhī ntiqāmin
and whomever Allah guides, there is no one who can lead him astray. Is not Allah an all-mighty avenger?
38

If you ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth?’ they will surely say, ‘Allah.’ Say, ‘Have you considered what you invoke besides Allah? Should Allah desire some distress for me, can they remove the distress visited by Him? Or should He desire some mercy for me, can they withhold His mercy?’ Say, ‘Allah is sufficient for me. In Him let all the trusting put their trust.’

Indeed We have sent down the Book to you for [the deliverance of] mankind with the truth. So whoever is guided is guided for his own sake, and whoever goes astray, goes astray to his own detriment, and it is not your duty to watch over them.
42
allāhu yatawaffā l-ʾanfusa ḥīna mawtihā wa-llatī lam tamut fī manāmihā fa-yumsiku llatī qaḍā ʿalayhā l-mawta wa-yursilu l-ʾukhrā ʾilā ʾajalin musamman ʾinna fī dhālika la-ʾāyātin li-qawmin yatafakkarūna
Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those who have not died in their sleep. Then He retains those for whom He has ordained death and releases the others until a specified time. There are indeed signs in that for a people who reflect.
43
ʾami ttakhadhū min dūni llāhī shufaʿāʾa qul ʾa-wa-law kānū lā yamlikūna shayʾan wa-lā yaʿqilūna
Have they taken intercessors besides Allah? Say, ‘What! Even though they have no control over anything and cannot apply reason?!’
44
qul li-llāhi sh-shafāʿatu jamīʿan lahū mulku s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi thumma ʾilayhi turjaʿūna
Say, ‘All intercession rests with Allah. To Him belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth; then you will be brought back to Him.’
45
wa-ʾidhā dhukira llāhu waḥdahu shmaʾazzat qulūbu lladhīna lā yuʾminūna bi-l-ʾākhirati wa-ʾidhā dhukira lladhīna min dūnihī ʾidhā hum yastabshirūna
When Allah is mentioned alone, [thereat] shrink away the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter, but when others are mentioned besides Him, behold, they rejoice!
46
quli llāhumma fāṭira s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi ʿālima l-ghaybi wa-sh-shahādati ʾanta taḥkumu bayna ʿibādika fī mā kānū fīhi yakhtalifūna
Say, ‘O Allah! Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, You will judge between Your servants concerning that about which they used to differ.’
47
wa-law ʾanna li-lladhīna ẓalamū mā fī l-ʾarḍi jamīʿan wa-mithlahū maʿahū la-ftadaw bihī min sūʾi l-ʿadhābi yawma l-qiyāmati wa-badā lahum mina llāhi mā lam yakūnū yaḥtasibūna
Even if the wrongdoers possessed all that is on the earth, and as much of it besides, they would surely offer it to redeem themselves with it from a terrible punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and there will appear to them from Allah what they had never reckoned.
48
wa-badā lahum sayyiʾātu mā kasabū wa-ḥāqa bihim mā kānū bihī yastahziʾūna
The evils of what they had earned will appear to them, and they will be besieged by what they used to deride.
49
fa-ʾidhā massa l-ʾinsāna ḍurrun daʿānā thumma ʾidhā khawwalnāhu niʿmatan minnā qāla ʾinnamā ʾūtītuhū ʿalā ʿilmin bal hiya fitnatun wa-lākinna ʾaktharahum lā yaʿlamūna
When distress befalls man, he supplicates Us. Then, when We grant him a blessing from Us, he says, ‘I was given it by virtue of [my] knowledge.’ Rather it is a test, but most of them do not know.
50
qad qālahā lladhīna min qablihim fa-mā ʾaghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yaksibūna
Those who were before them [also] said that, but what they used to earn did not avail them.
51
fa-ʾaṣābahum sayyiʾātu mā kasabū wa-lladhīna ẓalamū min hāʾulāʾi sa-yuṣībuhum sayyiʾātu mā kasabū wa-mā hum bi-muʿjizīna
So the evils of what they had earned visited them, and as for the wrongdoers among these, the evils of what they earn shall be visited on them and they will not thwart [Allah’s might].
52
ʾa-wa-lam yaʿlamū ʾanna llāha yabsuṭu r-rizqa li-man yashāʾu wa-yaqdiru ʾinna fī dhālika la-ʾāyātin li-qawmin yuʾminūna
Do they not know that Allah expands the provision for whomever He wishes and tightens it [for whomever He wishes]? There are indeed signs in that for a people who have faith.
53
qul yā-ʿibādiya lladhīna ʾasrafū ʿalā ʾanfusihim lā taqnaṭū min raḥmati llāhi ʾinna llāha yaghfiru dh-dhunūba jamīʿan ʾinnahū huwa l-ghafūru r-raḥīmu
Say [that Allah declares,] ‘O My servants who have committed excesses against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed Allah will forgive all sins. Indeed He is the All-forgiving, the All-merciful.
54
wa-ʾanībū ʾilā rabbikum wa-ʾaslimū lahū min qabli ʾan yaʾtiyakumu l-ʿadhābu thumma lā tunṣarūna
Turn penitently to Him and submit to Him before the punishment overtakes you, whereupon you will not be helped.
55
wa-ttabiʿū ʾaḥsana mā ʾunzila ʾilaykum min rabbikum min qabli ʾan yaʾtiyakumu l-ʿadhābu baghtatan wa-ʾantum lā tashʿurūna
And follow the best of what has been sent down to you from your Lord, before the punishment overtakes you suddenly while you are unaware.’
56
ʾan taqūla nafsun yā-ḥasratā ʿalā mā farraṭtu fī janbi llāhi wa-ʾin kuntu la-mina s-sākhirīna
Lest anyone should say, ‘Alas for my negligence in the vicinage of Allah! Indeed I was among those who ridiculed.’
57
ʾaw taqūla law ʾanna llāha hadānī la-kuntu mina l-muttaqīna
Or say, ‘Had Allah guided me I would have surely been among the Godwary!’
58
ʾaw taqūla ḥīna tarā l-ʿadhāba law ʾanna lī karratan fa-ʾakūna mina l-muḥsinīna
Or say, when he sights the punishment, ‘If only there had been a second chance for me I would be among the virtuous!’
59
balā qad jāʾatka ʾāyātī fa-kadhdhabta bihā wa-stakbarta wa-kunta mina l-kāfirīna
‘Yes, My signs certainly came to you, but you denied them and acted arrogantly and you were among the faithless.’
60
wa-yawma l-qiyāmati tarā lladhīna kadhabū ʿalā llāhi wujūhuhum muswaddatun ʾa-laysa fī jahannama mathwan li-l-mutakabbirīna
On the Day of Resurrection you will see those who attributed lies to Allah with their faces blackened. Is not the [final] abode of the arrogant in hell?
61
wa-yunajjī llāhu lladhīna ttaqaw bi-mafāzatihim lā yamassuhumu s-sūʾu wa-lā hum yaḥzanūna
Allah will deliver those who were Godwary with their salvation. No ill shall touch them, nor will they grieve.
62
allāhu khāliqu kulli shayʾin wa-huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin wakīlun
Allah is creator of all things, and He watches over all things.
63
lahū maqālīdu s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi wa-lladhīna kafarū bi-ʾāyāti llāhi ʾulāʾika humu l-khāsirūna
To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth, and those who disbelieve in the signs of Allah —it is they who are the losers.
64
qul ʾa-fa-ghayra llāhi taʾmurūnnī ʾaʿbudu ʾayyuhā l-jāhilūna
Say, ‘Will you, then, bid me to worship other than Allah, O you senseless ones?!’
65
wa-la-qad ʾūḥiya ʾilayka wa-ʾilā lladhīna min qablika la-ʾin ʾashrakta la-yaḥbaṭanna ʿamaluka wa-la-takūnanna mina l-khāsirīna
Certainly it has been revealed to you and to those [who have been] before you: ‘If you ascribe a partner to Allah your works shall fail and you shall surely be among the losers.
66
bali llāha fa-ʿbud wa-kun mina sh-shākirīna
Rather, worship Allah, and be among the grateful!’
67
wa-mā qadarū llāha ḥaqqa qadrihī wa-l-ʾarḍu jamīʿan qabḍatuhū yawma l-qiyāmati wa-s-samāwātu maṭwiyyātun bi-yamīnihī subḥānahū wa-taʿālā ʿammā yushrikūna
They do not regard Allah with the regard due to Him, yet the entire earth will be in His fist on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens, scrolled, in His right hand. Immaculate is He and exalted above [having] any partners that they ascribe [to Him].
68
wa-nufikha fī ṣ-ṣūri fa-ṣaʿiqa man fī s-samāwāti wa-man fī l-ʾarḍi ʾillā man shāʾa llāhu thumma nufikha fīhi ʾukhrā fa-ʾidhā hum qiyāmun yanẓurūna
And the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens will swoon and whoever is on the earth, except whomever Allah wishes. Then it will be blown a second time, behold, they will rise up, looking on!
69
wa-ʾashraqati l-ʾarḍu bi-n-nūri rabbihā wa-wuḍiʿa l-kitābu wa-jīʾa bi-n-nabiyyīna wa-sh-shuhadāʾi wa-quḍiya baynahum bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-hum lā yuẓlamūna
And the earth will glow with the light of her Lord, and the Book1 will be set up, and the prophets and the martyrs2 will be brought, and judgment will be made between them with justice, and they will not be wronged. That is, the record of the people’s deeds.Or ‘the witnesses.’
70
wa-wuffiyat kullu nafsin mā ʿamilat wa-huwa ʾaʿlamu bi-mā yafʿalūna
Every soul will be recompensed fully for what it has done, and He is best aware of what they do.
71
wa-sīqa lladhīna kafarū ʾilā jahannama zumaran ḥattā ʾidhā jāʾūhā futiḥat ʾabwābuhā wa-qāla lahum khazanatuhā ʾa-lam yaʾtikum rusulun minkum yatlūna ʿalaykum ʾāyāti rabbikum wa-yundhirūnakum liqāʾa yawmikum hādhā qālū balā wa-lākin ḥaqqat kalimatu l-ʿadhābi ʿalā l-kāfirīna
The faithless will be driven to hell in throngs. When they reach it, and its gates are opened, its keepers will say to them, ‘Did there not come to you [any] apostles from among yourselves, reciting to you the signs of your Lord and warning you of the encounter of this day of yours?’ They will say, ‘Yes, but the word of punishment became due against the faithless.’
72
It will be said, ‘Enter the gates of hell to remain in it [forever]. Evil is the [ultimate] abode of the arrogant.’
73
wa-sīqa lladhīna ttaqaw rabbahum ʾilā l-jannati zumaran ḥattā ʾidhā jāʾūhā wa-futiḥat ʾabwābuhā wa-qāla lahum khazanatuhā salāmun ʿalaykum ṭibtum fa-dkhulūhā khālidīna
Those who are wary of their Lord will be led to paradise in throngs. When they reach it, and its gates are opened, its keepers will say to them, ‘Peace be to you! You are welcome!1 Enter it to remain [forever].’Or ‘You are excellent!’ Or ‘You have been pure.’
74
wa-qālū l-ḥamdu li-llāhi lladhī ṣadaqanā waʿdahū wa-ʾawrathanā l-ʾarḍa natabawwaʾu mina l-jannati ḥaythu nashāʾu fa-niʿma ʾajru l-ʿāmilīna
They will say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who has fulfilled His promise to us and made us heirs to the earth, that we may settle in paradise wherever we may wish!’ How excellent is the reward of the workers [of righteousness]!
75
wa-tarā l-malāʾikata ḥāffīna min ḥawli l-ʿarshi yusabbiḥūna bi-ḥamdi rabbihim wa-quḍiya baynahum bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-qīla l-ḥamdu li-llāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīna
And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne, celebrating the praise of their Lord, and judgment will be made between them with justice, and it will be said, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds!’
