Surah 29
AL-ʿANKABŪT
THE SPIDER
meccan 69 Verses
The surah that mentions the practical fragility of the webbed home of The Spider as an analogy for those who take false deities as a shelter. It takes its name from verse 41 which mentions “the spider” (ʿankabūt). The surah stresses that believers will be tested and that they should remain steadfast. The misconceptions of disbelievers regarding the nature of revelation and the Prophet are addressed. References are made to earlier prophets and details given of the punishments brought on those who denied them.

Alif, Lām, Mīm.
2

ʾa-ḥasiba n-nāsu ʾan yutrakū ʾan yaqūlū ʾāmannā wa-hum lā yuftanūna

Do the people suppose that they will be let off because they say, ‘We have faith,’ and they will not be tested?
3

wa-la-qad fatannā lladhīna min qablihim fa-la-yaʿlamanna llāhu lladhīna ṣadaqū wa-la-yaʿlamanna l-kādhibīna

Certainly We tested those who were before them. So Allah shall surely ascertain those who are truthful, and He shall surely ascertain the liars.
4

ʾam ḥasiba lladhīna yaʿmalūna s-sayyiʾāti ʾan yasbiqūnā sāʾa mā yaḥkumūna

Do those who commit misdeeds suppose that they can outmaneuver Us? Evil is the judgement that they make.
5

man kāna yarjū liqāʾa llāhi fa-ʾinna ʾajala llāhi la-ʾātin wa-huwa s-samīʿu l-ʿalīmu

Whoever expects to encounter Allah [should know that] Allah’s [appointed] time will indeed come, and He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.
6

wa-man jāhada fa-ʾinnamā yujāhidu li-nafsihī ʾinna llāha la-ghaniyyun ʿani l-ʿālamīna

Whoever strives, strives only for his own sake.1 Indeed Allah has no need of the creatures.Or ‘Whoever wages jihād, wages jihād only for his own sake.’
7

wa-lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti la-nukaffiranna ʿanhum sayyiʾātihim wa-la-najziyannahum ʾaḥsana lladhī kānū yaʿmalūna

As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, We will absolve them of their misdeeds and We will surely reward them by the best of what they used to do.
8

wa-waṣṣaynā l-ʾinsāna bi-wālidayhi ḥusnan wa-ʾin jāhadāka li-tushrika bī mā laysa laka bihī ʿilmun fa-lā tuṭiʿhumā ʾilayya marjiʿukum fa-ʾunabbiʾukum bi-mā kuntum taʿmalūna

We have enjoined man to be good to his parents. But if they urge you to ascribe to Me as partner that of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them. To Me will be your return, whereat I will inform you concerning that which you used to do.
9

wa-lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti la-nudkhilannahum fī ṣ-ṣāliḥīna

Those who have faith and do righteous deeds, We will surely admit them among the righteous.
10

wa-mina n-nāsi man yaqūlu ʾāmannā bi-llāhi fa-ʾidhā ʾūdhiya fī llāhi jaʿala fitnata n-nāsi ka-ʿadhābi llāhi wa-la-ʾin jāʾa naṣrun min rabbika la-yaqūlunna ʾinnā kunnā maʿakum ʾa-wa-laysa llāhu bi-ʾaʿlama bi-mā fī ṣudūri l-ʿālamīna

Among the people there are those who say, ‘We have faith in Allah,’ but if such a one is tormented in Allah’s cause, he takes persecution by the people for Allah’s punishment. Yet if there comes any help1 from your Lord, they will say for sure, ‘We were indeed with you.’ Does not Allah know best what is in the breasts of the creatures?Or ‘victory.’
11

wa-la-yaʿlamanna llāhu lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-la-yaʿlamanna l-munāfiqīna

Allah shall surely ascertain those who have faith, and He shall surely ascertain the hypocrites.
12

wa-qāla lladhīna kafarū li-lladhīna ʾāmanū ttabiʿū sabīlanā wa-l-naḥmil khaṭāyākum wa-mā hum bi-ḥāmilīna min khaṭāyāhum min shayʾin ʾinnahum la-kādhibūna

The faithless say to the faithful, ‘Follow our way and we will bear [responsibility for] your iniquities.’ They will not bear anything of their iniquities. They are indeed liars.
13

wa-la-yaḥmilunna ʾathqālahum wa-ʾathqālan maʿa ʾathqālihim wa-la-yusʾalunna yawma l-qiyāmati ʿammā kānū yaftarūna

But surely they will carry their own burdens and other burdens along with their own burdens, and they will surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection concerning that which they used to fabricate.
14

wa-la-qad ʾarsalnā nūḥan ʾilā qawmihī fa-labitha fīhim ʾalfa sanatin ʾillā khamsīna ʿāman fa-ʾakhadhahumu ṭ-ṭūfānu wa-hum ẓālimūna

Certainly We sent Noah to his people, and he remained with them for a thousand-less-fifty years. Then the flood overtook them while they were wrongdoers.
15

fa-ʾanjaynāhu wa-ʾaṣḥāba s-safīnati wa-jaʿalnāhā ʾāyatan li-l-ʿālamīna

Then We delivered him and the occupants of the Ark, and made it a sign for all the nations.
16

wa-ʾibrāhīma ʾidh qāla li-qawmihi ʿbudū llāha wa-ttaqūhu dhālikum khayrun lakum ʾin kuntum taʿlamūna

And Abraham, when he said to his people, ‘Worship Allah and be wary of Him. That is better for you, should you know.
17

ʾinnamā taʿbudūna min dūni llāhi ʾawthānan wa-takhluqūna ʾifkan ʾinna lladhīna taʿbudūna min dūni llāhi lā yamlikūna lakum rizqan fa-btaghū ʿinda llāhi r-rizqa wa-ʿbudūhu wa-shkurū lahū ʾilayhi turjaʿūna

In fact, instead of Allah you worship idols, and you invent a lie. Indeed those whom you worship besides Allah have no control over your provision. So seek all [your] provision from Allah, and worship Him and thank Him, and to Him you shall be brought back.’1The narrative of Abraham is resumed in verse 24 below.
18

wa-ʾin tukadhdhibū fa-qad kadhdhaba ʾumamun min qablikum wa-mā ʿalā r-rasūli ʾillā l-balāghu l-mubīnu

And if you impugn [the Apostle’s teaching], then [other] nations have impugned [likewise] before you, and the Apostle’s duty is only to communicate in clear terms.
19

ʾa-wa-lam yaraw kayfa yubdiʾu llāhu l-khalqa thumma yuʿīduhū ʾinna dhālika ʿalā llāhi yasīrun

Have they not regarded how Allah originates the creation? Then He will bring it back. That is indeed easy for Allah.
20

qul sīrū fī l-ʾarḍi fa-nẓurū kayfa badaʾa l-khalqa thumma llāhu yunshiʾu n-nashʾata l-ʾākhirata ʾinna llāha ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun

Say, ‘Travel over the land and then observe how He has originated the creation.’ Then Allah shall bring about the genesis of the Hereafter. Indeed Allah has power over all things.
21

yuʿadhdhibu man yashāʾu wa-yarḥamu man yashāʾu wa-ʾilayhi tuqlabūna

He will punish whomever He wishes and have mercy on whomever He wishes, and to Him you will be returned.
22

wa-mā ʾantum bi-muʿjizīna fī l-ʾarḍi wa-lā fī s-samāʾi wa-mā lakum min dūni llāhi min waliyyin wa-lā naṣīrin

You cannot thwart Him on the earth or in the sky, nor do you have besides Allah any guardian or any helper.
23

wa-lladhīna kafarū bi-ʾāyāti llāhi wa-liqāʾihī ʾulāʾika yaʾisū min raḥmatī wa-ʾulāʾika lahum ʿadhābun ʾalīmun

Those who deny the signs of Allah and the encounter with Him, they have despaired of My mercy, and for such there is a painful punishment.
24

fa-mā kāna jawāba qawmihī ʾillā ʾan qālū qtulūhu ʾaw ḥarriqūhu fa-ʾanjāhu llāhu mina n-nāri ʾinna fī dhālika la-ʾāyātin li-qawmin yuʾminūna

But the only answer of his people was that they said, ‘Kill him, or burn him.’ Then Allah delivered him from the fire. There are indeed signs in that for a people who have faith.
25

wa-qāla ʾinnamā ttakhadhtum min dūni llāhi ʾawthānan mawaddata baynikum fī l-ḥayāti d-dunyā thumma yawma l-qiyāmati yakfuru baʿḍukum bi-baʿḍin wa-yalʿanu baʿḍukum baʿḍan wa-maʾwākumu n-nāru wa-mā lakum min nāṣirīna

He said, ‘You have taken idols [for worship] besides Allah for the sake of [mutual] affection amongst yourselves in the life of the world. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will disown one another and curse one another,1 and the Fire will be your abode, and you will not have any helpers.’Cf. 43:67.
26

fa-ʾāmana lahū lūṭun wa-qāla ʾinnī muhājirun ʾilā rabbī ʾinnahū huwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīmu

Thereupon Lot believed in him, and he said, ‘Indeed I am migrating toward my Lord. Indeed He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.’
27

wa-wahabnā lahū ʾisḥāqa wa-yaʿqūba wa-jaʿalnā fī dhurriyyatihi n-nubuwwata wa-l-kitāba wa-ʾātaynāhu ʾajrahū fī d-dunyā wa-ʾinnahū fī l-ʾākhirati la-mina ṣ-ṣāliḥīna

And We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and We ordained among his descendants prophethood and the Book, and We gave him his reward in the world, and in the Hereafter he will indeed be among the Righteous.
28

wa-lūṭan ʾidh qāla li-qawmihī ʾinnakum la-taʾtūna l-fāḥishata mā sabaqakum bihā min ʾaḥadin mina l-ʿālamīna

And Lot, when he said to his people, ‘You indeed commit an indecency none in the world has ever committed before you!
29

ʾa-ʾinnakum la-taʾtūna r-rijāla wa-taqṭaʿūna s-sabīla wa-taʾtūna fī nādīkumu l-munkara fa-mā kāna jawāba qawmihī ʾillā ʾan qālū ʾtinā bi-ʿadhābi llāhi ʾin kunta mina ṣ-ṣādiqīna

What! Do you come to men, and cut off the way,1 and commit outrages in your gatherings?’ But the only answer of his people was that they said, ‘Bring us Allah’s punishment should you be truthful.’That is, the natural way of conjugal relations between the sexes.
30

qāla rabbi nṣurnī ʿalā l-qawmi l-mufsidīna

He said, ‘My Lord! Help me against this corruptive lot.’
31

wa-lammā jāʾat rusulunā ʾibrāhīma bi-l-bushrā qālū ʾinnā muhlikū ʾahli hādhihi l-qaryati ʾinna ʾahlahā kānū ẓālimīna

And when Our messengers1 came to Abraham with the good news, they said, ‘We are indeed going to destroy the people of this town. Its people are indeed wrongdoers.’That is, the angels sent to give the good news of Isaac’s birth to Abraham and to destroy the people of Sodom.
32

qāla ʾinna fīhā lūṭan qālū naḥnu ʾaʿlamu bi-man fīhā la-nunajjiyannahū wa-ʾahlahū ʾillā mraʾatahū kānat mina l-ghābirīna

He said, ‘Lot is indeed in it.’ They said, ‘We know better those who are in it. We will surely deliver him and his family, except his wife: she shall be one of those who remain behind.’
33

wa-lammā ʾan jāʾat rusulunā lūṭan sīʾa bihim wa-ḍāqa bihim dharʿan wa-qālū lā takhaf wa-lā taḥzan ʾinnā munajjūka wa-ʾahlaka ʾillā mraʾataka kānat mina l-ghābirīna

And when Our messengers came to Lot, he was distressed on their account and in a predicament for their sake. But they said, ‘Do not be afraid, nor grieve! We shall deliver you and your family, except your wife: she will be one of those who remain behind.
34

ʾinnā munzilūna ʿalā ʾahli hādhihi l-qaryati rijzan mina s-samāʾi bi-mā kānū yafsuqūna

We are indeed going to bring down upon the people of this town a punishment from the sky because of the transgressions they used to commit.’
35

wa-la-qad taraknā minhā ʾāyatan bayyinatan li-qawmin yaʿqilūna

Certainly We have left of it a manifest sign for a people who apply reason.
36

wa-ʾilā madyana ʾakhāhum shuʿayban fa-qāla yā-qawmi ʿbudū llāha wa-rjū l-yawma l-ʾākhira wa-lā taʿthaw fī l-ʾarḍi mufsidīna

And to Midian We sent Shuʿayb, their brother. He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah, and expect [to encounter] the Last Day, and do not act wickedly on the earth causing corruption.’
37

fa-kadhdhabūhu fa-ʾakhadhathumu r-rajfatu fa-ʾaṣbaḥū fī dārihim jāthimīna

But they impugned him, whereupon the earthquake seized them, and they lay lifeless prostrate in their homes.
38

wa-ʿādan wa-thamūda wa-qad tabayyana lakum min masākinihim wa-zayyana lahumu sh-shayṭānu ʾaʿmālahum fa-ṣaddahum ʿani s-sabīli wa-kānū mustabṣirīna

And ʿĀd and Thamūd, [whose fate] is evident to you from their habitations. Satan made their deeds seem decorous to them, thus he barred them from the way [of Allah], though they used to be perceptive.1That is, they let themselves be deceived by Satan despite their God-given ability to discern between good and evil.
39

wa-qārūna wa-firʿawna wa-hāmāna wa-la-qad jāʾahum mūsā bi-l-bayyināti fa-stakbarū fī l-ʾarḍi wa-mā kānū sābiqīna

And Korah, Pharaoh, and Hāmān. Certainly Moses brought them manifest proofs, but they acted arrogantly in the land; though they could not outmaneuver [Allah].
40

fa-kullan ʾakhadhnā bi-dhanbihī fa-minhum man ʾarsalnā ʿalayhi ḥāṣiban wa-minhum man ʾakhadhathu ṣ-ṣayḥatu wa-minhum man khasafnā bihi l-ʾarḍa wa-minhum man ʾaghraqnā wa-mā kāna llāhu li-yaẓlimahum wa-lākin kānū ʾanfusahum yaẓlimūna

So We seized each [of them] for his sin: among them were those upon whom We unleashed a rain of stones, and among them were those who were seized by the Cry, and among them were those whom We caused the earth to swallow, and among them were those whom We drowned. It was not Allah who wronged them, but it was they who used to wrong themselves.
41

mathalu lladhīna ttakhadhū min dūni llāhi ʾawliyāʾa ka-mathali l-ʿankabūti ttakhadhat baytan wa-ʾinna ʾawhana l-buyūti la-baytu l-ʿankabūti law kānū yaʿlamūna

The parable of those who take guardians instead of Allah is that of the spider that takes a home, and indeed the frailest of homes is the home of a spider, had they known!
42

ʾinna llāha yaʿlamu mā yadʿūna min dūnihī min shayʾin wa-huwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīmu

Allah indeed knows whatever thing they invoke besides Him, and He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.
43

wa-tilka l-ʾamthālu naḍribuhā li-n-nāsi wa-mā yaʿqiluhā ʾillā l-ʿālimūna

And We draw these parables for mankind; but no one grasps them except those who have knowledge.
44

khalaqa llāhu s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍa bi-l-ḥaqqi ʾinna fī dhālika la-ʾāyatan li-l-muʾminīna

Allah created the heavens and the earth with reason. There is indeed a sign in that for the faithful.
45

utlu mā ʾūḥiya ʾilayka mina l-kitābi wa-ʾaqimi ṣ-ṣalāta ʾinna ṣ-ṣalāta tanhā ʿani l-faḥshāʾi wa-l-munkari wa-la-dhikru llāhi ʾakbaru wa-llāhu yaʿlamu mā taṣnaʿūna

Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book, and maintain the prayer. Indeed the prayer prevents indecencies and wrongs, and the remembrance of Allah is surely greater. And Allah knows whatever [deeds] you do.
46

wa-lā tujādilū ʾahla l-kitābi ʾillā bi-llatī hiya ʾaḥsanu ʾillā lladhīna ẓalamū minhum wa-qūlū ʾāmannā bi-lladhī ʾunzila ʾilaynā wa-ʾunzila ʾilaykum wa-ʾilāhunā wa-ʾilāhukum wāḥidun wa-naḥnu lahū muslimūna

Do not dispute with the People of the Book except in a manner which is best, barring such of them as are wrongdoers, and say, ‘We believe in that which has been sent down to us and has been sent down to you; our God and your God is one [and the same], and to Him do we submit.’
47

wa-ka-dhālika ʾanzalnā ʾilayka l-kitāba fa-lladhīna ʾātaynāhumu l-kitāba yuʾminūna bihī wa-min hāʾulāʾi man yuʾminu bihī wa-mā yajḥadu bi-ʾāyātinā ʾillā l-kāfirūna

Thus have We sent down the Book to you; and those to whom We have given the Book believe in it, and of these1 there are some who believe in it, and none contests Our signs except the faithless. That is, of the people of Makkah.
48

wa-mā kunta tatlū min qablihī min kitābin wa-lā takhuṭṭuhū bi-yamīnika ʾidhan la-rtāba l-mubṭilūna

You did not use to recite any scripture before it, nor did you write it with your right hand, for then the impugners would have been skeptical.
49

bal huwa ʾāyātun bayyinātun fī ṣudūri lladhīna ʾūtū l-ʿilma wa-mā yajḥadu bi-ʾāyātinā ʾillā ẓ-ẓālimūna

Rather it is [present as] manifest signs in the breasts of those who have been given knowledge, and none contests Our signs except wrongdoers.
50

wa-qālū law-lā ʾunzila ʿalayhi ʾāyātun min rabbihī qul ʾinnamā l-ʾāyātu ʿinda llāhi wa-ʾinnamā ʾana nadhīrun mubīnun

They say, ‘Why has not some sign1 been sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say, ‘The signs are only with Allah, and I am only a manifest warner.’That is, a miracle.
51

ʾa-wa-lam yakfihim ʾannā ʾanzalnā ʿalayka l-kitāba yutlā ʿalayhim ʾinna fī dhālika la-raḥmatan wa-dhikrā li-qawmin yuʾminūna

Does it not suffice them that We have sent down to you the Book which is recited to them? There is indeed a mercy and admonition in that for a people who have faith.
52

qul kafā bi-llāhi baynī wa-baynakum shahīdan yaʿlamu mā fī s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi wa-lladhīna ʾāmanū bi-l-bāṭili wa-kafarū bi-llāhi ʾulāʾika humu l-khāsirūna

Say, ‘Allah suffices as a witness between me and you: He knows whatever there is in the heavens and the earth. Those who put faith in falsehood and defy Allah, —it is they who are the losers.’
53

wa-yastaʿjilūnaka bi-l-ʿadhābi wa-law-lā ʾajalun musamman la-jāʾahumu l-ʿadhābu wa-la-yaʾtiyannahum baghtatan wa-hum lā yashʿurūna

They ask you to hasten the punishment. Yet were it not for a specified time, the punishment would have surely overtaken them. Surely it will overtake them suddenly while they are unaware.
54

yastaʿjilūnaka bi-l-ʿadhābi wa-ʾinna jahannama la-muḥīṭatun bi-l-kāfirīna

They ask you to hasten the punishment, and indeed hell will besiege the faithless
55

yawma yaghshāhumu l-ʿadhābu min fawqihim wa-min taḥti ʾarjulihim wa-yaqūlu dhūqū mā kuntum taʿmalūna

on the day when the punishment envelopes them, from above them and from under their feet, and He will say, ‘Taste what you used to do!’
56

yā-ʿibādiya lladhīna ʾāmanū ʾinna ʾarḍī wāsiʿatun fa-ʾiyyāya fa-ʿbudūni

O My servants who have faith! My earth is indeed vast. So worship [only] Me.
57

kullu nafsin dhāʾiqatu l-mawti thumma ʾilaynā turjaʿūna

Every soul shall taste death. Then you shall be brought back to Us.
58

wa-lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti la-nubawwiʾannahum mina l-jannati ghurafan tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru khālidīna fīhā niʿma ʾajru l-ʿāmilīna

Those who have faith and do righteous deeds, We will surely settle them in lofty abodes of paradise with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever]. How excellent is the reward of the workers!
59

alladhīna ṣabarū wa-ʿalā rabbihim yatawakkalūna

—Those who are patient and who put their trust in their Lord.
60

wa-ka-ʾayyin min dābbatin lā taḥmilu rizqahā llāhu yarzuquhā wa-ʾiyyākum wa-huwa s-samīʿu l-ʿalīmu

How many an animal there is that does not carry its own provision. Allah provides for it, and for you, and He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.
61

wa-la-ʾin saʾaltahum man khalaqa s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍa wa-sakhkhara sh-shamsa wa-l-qamara la-yaqūlunna llāhu fa-ʾannā yuʾfakūna

If you ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth, and disposed the sun and the moon?’ They will surely say, ‘Allah.’ Then where do they stray?
62

allāhu yabsuṭu r-rizqa li-man yashāʾu min ʿibādihī wa-yaqdiru lahū ʾinna llāha bi-kulli shayʾin ʿalīmun

Allah expands the provision for whomever He wishes of His servants, and tightens it for him. Indeed Allah has knowledge of all things.
63

wa-la-ʾin saʾaltahum man nazzala mina s-samāʾi māʾan fa-ʾaḥyā bihi l-ʾarḍa min baʿdi mawtihā la-yaqūlunna llāhu quli l-ḥamdu li-llāhi bal ʾaktharuhum lā yaʿqilūna

And if you ask them, ‘Who sends down water from the sky, with which He revives the earth after its death?’ They will surely say, ‘Allah.’ Say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah!’ But most of them do not apply reason.
64

wa-mā hādhihi l-ḥayātu d-dunyā ʾillā lahwun wa-laʿibun wa-ʾinna d-dāra l-ʾākhirata la-hiya l-ḥayawānu law kānū yaʿlamūna

The life of this world is nothing but diversion and play, but the abode of the Hereafter is indeed Life, had they known!
65

fa-ʾidhā rakibū fī l-fulki daʿawu llāha mukhliṣīna lahu d-dīna fa-lammā najjāhum ʾilā l-barri ʾidhā hum yushrikūna

When they board the ship, they invoke Allah putting exclusive faith in Him, but when He delivers them to land, behold, they ascribe partners [to Him],
66

li-yakfurū bi-mā ʾātaynāhum wa-li-yatamattaʿū fa-sawfa yaʿlamūna

being ungrateful for what We have given them! So let them enjoy. Soon they will know!
67

ʾa-wa-lam yaraw ʾannā jaʿalnā ḥaraman ʾāminan wa-yutakhaṭṭafu n-nāsu min ḥawlihim ʾa-fa-bi-l-bāṭili yuʾminūna wa-bi-niʿmati llāhi yakfurūna

Have they not seen that We have appointed a safe sanctuary,1 while the people are despoiled all around them? Would they then believe in falsehood and be ungrateful toward the blessing of Allah? That is, the city of Makkah.
68

wa-man ʾaẓlamu mimmani ftarā ʿalā llāhi kadhiban ʾaw kadhdhaba bi-l-ḥaqqi lammā jāʾahū ʾa-laysa fī jahannama mathwan li-l-kāfirīna

Who is a greater wrongdoer than him who fabricates a lie against Allah, or denies the truth when it comes to him? Is not the [final] abode of the faithless in hell?
69

wa-lladhīna jāhadū fīnā la-nahdiyannahum subulanā wa-ʾinna llāha la-maʿa l-muḥsinīna

As for those who strive in Us, We shall surely guide them in Our ways, and Allah is indeed with the virtuous.
