The surah proclaiming the Quran that God bestowed upon Muhammad to be, in its finality and totality, The Criterion of everlasting salvation for all humankind until the end of time. It takes its name from verse 1, which refers to the Quran as “al-Furqān” (lit. “the Distinguisher”, “the Separator” or “the Dierentiator”, i.e. a criterion for distinguishing between truth and falsehood). The surah starts with a denunciation of polytheism, then deals with the disbelievers” arguments against the Prophet, the Quran, and the Day of Judgement. It warns them of their fate, citing examples of earlier peoples. The surah describes the power and grace of God, and ends with the qualities of true believers in verse 63 .The surah is also known as: Discrimination, Salvation, The Dierentiator, The Standard.
1
tabāraka lladhī nazzala l-furqāna ʿalā ʿabdihī li-yakūna li-l-ʿālamīna nadhīran-i
Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion to His servant that he may be a warner to all the nations.
2
alladhī lahū mulku s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi wa-lam yattakhidh waladan wa-lam yakun lahū sharīkun fī l-mulki wa-khalaqa kulla shayʾin fa-qaddarahū taqdīran
He, to whom belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth, and who did not take a son, nor has He any partner in sovereignty, and He created everything and determined it in a precise measure.
3
wa-ttakhadhū min dūnihī ʾālihatan lā yakhluqūna shayʾan wa-hum yukhlaqūna wa-lā yamlikūna li-ʾanfusihim ḍarran wa-lā nafʿan wa-lā yamlikūna mawtan wa-lā ḥayātan wa-lā nushūran
Yet they have taken gods besides Him who create nothing and have themselves been created, and who have no control over their own harm or benefit and have no control over [their own] death, or life, or resurrection.
4
wa-qāla lladhīna kafarū ʾin hādhā ʾillā ʾifkun-i ftarāhu wa-ʾaʿānahū ʿalayhi qawmun ʾākharūna fa-qad jāʾū ẓulman wa-zūran
The faithless say, ‘This is nothing but a lie that he has fabricated, and other people have abetted him in it.’ Thus they have certainly come out with wrongdoing and falsehood.
5
wa-qālū ʾasāṭīru l-ʾawwalīna ktatabahā fa-hiya tumlā ʿalayhi bukratan wa-ʾaṣīlan
They say, ‘He has taken down myths of the ancients, and they are dictated to him morning and evening.’
6
qul ʾanzalahu lladhī yaʿlamu s-sirra fī s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi ʾinnahū kāna ghafūran raḥīman
Say, ‘It has been sent down by Him who knows the hidden in the heavens and the earth. Indeed He is all-forgiving, all-merciful.’
7
wa-qālū mā-li hādhā r-rasūli yaʾkulu ṭ-ṭaʿāma wa-yamshī fī l-ʾaswāqi law-lā ʾunzila ʾilayhi malakun fa-yakūna maʿahū nadhīran
And they say, ‘What sort of apostle is this who eats food and walks in the marketplaces? Why has not an angel been sent down to him so as to be a warner along with him?’
8
ʾaw yulqā ʾilayhi kanzun ʾaw takūnu lahū jannatun yaʾkulu minhā wa-qāla ẓ-ẓālimūna ʾin tattabiʿūna ʾillā rajulan masḥūran-i
Or, ‘[Why is not] a treasure thrown to him, or [why does] he [not] have a garden from which he may eat?’ And the wrongdoers say, ‘You are just following a bewitched man.’
9
unẓur kayfa ḍarabū laka l-ʾamthāla fa-ḍallū fa-lā yastaṭīʿūna sabīlan
Look, how they draw comparisons for you; so they go astray, and cannot find the way.
10
tabāraka lladhī ʾin shāʾa jaʿala laka khayran min dhālika jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru wa-yajʿal laka quṣūran
Blessed is He who will grant you better than that if He wishes —gardens with streams running in them, and He will make for you palaces.
11
bal kadhdhabū bi-s-sāʿati wa-ʾaʿtadnā li-man kadhdhaba bi-s-sāʿati saʿīran
Rather they deny the Hour, and We have prepared a Blaze for those who deny the Hour.
12
ʾidhā raʾathum min makānin baʿīdin samiʿū lahā taghayyuẓan wa-zafīran
When it1 sights them from a distant place, they will hear it raging and roaring. That is, hell.
13
wa-ʾidhā ʾulqū minhā makānan ḍayyiqan muqarranīna daʿaw hunālika thubūran
And when they are cast into a narrow place in it, bound together [in chains], they will pray for [their own] annihilation.1Cf. 43:77; 78:40.
14
lā tadʿū l-yawma thubūran wāḥidan wa-dʿū thubūran kathīran
[They will be told:] ‘Do not pray for a single annihilation today, but pray for many annihilations!’
15
qul ʾa-dhālika khayrun ʾam jannatu l-khuldi llatī wuʿida l-muttaqūna kānat lahum jazāʾan wa-maṣīran
Say, ‘Is that better, or the everlasting paradise promised to the Godwary, which will be their reward and destination?’
16
lahum fīhā mā yashāʾūna khālidīna kāna ʿalā rabbika waʿdan masʾūlan
There they will have whatever they wish, abiding [forever], a promise [much] besought, [binding] on your Lord.1Cf. 3:194: ‘Our Lord, grant us what You have promised us through Your apostles.’
17
wa-yawma yaḥshuruhum wa-mā yaʿbudūna min dūni llāhi fa-yaqūlu ʾa-ʾantum ʾaḍlaltum ʿibādī hāʾulāʾi ʾam hum ḍallū s-sabīla
On the day that He will muster them and those whom they worship besides Allah, He will say, ‘Was it you who led astray these servants of Mine, or did they themselves stray from the way?’
18
qālū subḥānaka mā kāna yanbaghī lanā ʾan nattakhidha min dūnika min ʾawliyāʾa wa-lākin mattaʿtahum wa-ʾābāʾahum ḥattā nasū dh-dhikra wa-kānū qawman būran
They will say, ‘Immaculate are You! It does not behoove us to take any guardians in Your stead! But You provided for them and their fathers until they forgot the Reminder, and they were a ruined lot.’
19
fa-qad kadhdhabūkum bi-mā taqūlūna fa-mā tastaṭīʿūna ṣarfan wa-lā naṣran wa-man yaẓlim minkum nudhiqhu ʿadhāban kabīran
So they will certainly impugn you in what you say, and you will neither be able to circumvent [punishment] nor find help, and whoever of you does wrong, We shall make him taste a terrible punishment.
20
wa-mā ʾarsalnā qablaka mina l-mursalīna ʾillā ʾinnahum la-yaʾkulūna ṭ-ṭaʿāma wa-yamshūna fī l-ʾaswāqi wa-jaʿalnā baʿḍakum li-baʿḍin fitnatan ʾa-taṣbirūna wa-kāna rabbuka baṣīran
We did not send any apostles before you but that they indeed ate food and walked in marketplaces. We have made you a trial for one another, [to see] if you will be patient, and your Lord is all-seeing.
21
wa-qāla lladhīna lā yarjūna liqāʾanā law-lā ʾunzila ʿalaynā l-malāʾikatu ʾaw narā rabbanā la-qadi stakbarū fī ʾanfusihim wa-ʿataw ʿutuwwan kabīran
Those who do not expect to encounter Us say, ‘Why have angels not been sent down to us, or why do we not see our Lord?’ Certainly they are full of arrogance within their souls and have become terribly defiant.
22
yawma yarawna l-malāʾikata lā bushrā yawmaʾidhin li-l-mujrimīna wa-yaqūlūna ḥijran maḥjūran
The day when they see the angels, there will be no good news for the guilty that day, and they1 will say, ‘Keep off [from paradise]!’That is, the angels, who will say this to the faithless. According to another interpretation, during pre-Islamic days, whenever, during one of the holy months in which warfare was prohibited by custom, an Arab felt threatened by someone belonging to a belligerent tribe, he would say, Ḥijran maḥjūrā, thus telling the member of the hostile tribe to keep distance by appealing to the sanctity of the holy month. On this basis, it is the faithless who ask the angels to keep off.
23
wa-qadimnā ʾilā mā ʿamilū min ʿamalin fa-jaʿalnāhu habāʾan manthūran
Then We shall attend to the works they have done and then turn them into scattered dust.
24
ʾaṣḥābu l-jannati yawmaʾidhin khayrun mustaqarran wa-ʾaḥsanu maqīlan
On that day the inhabitants of paradise will be in the best abode and an excellent resting place.
25
wa-yawma tashaqqaqu s-samāʾu bi-l-ghamāmi wa-nuzzila l-malāʾikatu tanzīlan-i
The day when the sky with its clouds will split open, and the angels will be sent down [in a majestic] descent,
26
al-mulku yawmaʾidhin-i l-ḥaqqu li-r-raḥmāni wa-kāna yawman ʿalā l-kāfirīna ʿasīran
on that day true sovereignty will belong to the All-beneficent, and it will be a hard day for the faithless.1Cf. 74:9.
27
wa-yawma yaʿaḍḍu ẓ-ẓālimu ʿalā yadayhi yaqūlu yā-laytanī ttakhadhtu maʿa r-rasūli sabīlan
A day when the wrongdoer will bite his hands, saying, ‘I wish I had followed the Apostle’s way!
28
yā-waylatā laytanī lam ʾattakhidh fulānan khalīlan
Woe to me! I wish I had not taken so and so as a friend!
29
la-qad ʾaḍallanī ʿani dh-dhikri baʿda ʾidh jāʾanī wa-kāna sh-shayṭānu li-l-ʾinsāni khadhūlan
Certainly he led me astray from the Reminder after it had come to me, and Satan is a deserter of man.’
30
wa-qāla r-rasūlu yā-rabbi ʾinna qawmī ttakhadhū hādhā l-qurʾāna mahjūran
And the Apostle will say, ‘O my Lord! Indeed my people consigned this Qurʾān to oblivion.’
31
wa-ka-dhālika jaʿalnā li-kulli nabiyyin ʿaduwwan mina l-mujrimīna wa-kafā bi-rabbika hādiyan wa-naṣīran
That is how for every prophet We assigned an enemy from among the guilty, and your Lord suffices as helper and guide.
32
wa-qāla lladhīna kafarū law-lā nuzzila ʿalayhi l-qurʾānu jumlatan wāḥidatan ka-dhālika li-nuthabbita bihī fuʾādaka wa-rattalnāhu tartīlan
The faithless say, ‘Why has not the Qurʾān been sent down to him all at once?’ So it is, that We may strengthen your heart with it, and We have recited it [to you] in a measured tone.
33
wa-lā yaʾtūnaka bi-mathalin ʾillā jiʾnāka bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-ʾaḥsana tafsīran-i
They do not bring you any poser but that We bring you the truth [in reply to them] and the best exposition.
34
alladhīna yuḥsharūna ʿalā wujūhihim ʾilā jahannama ʾulāʾika sharrun makānan wa-ʾaḍallu sabīlan
Those who will be mustered on their faces toward hell, they are the worse situated and further astray from the [right] way.
35
wa-la-qad ʾātaynā mūsā l-kitāba wa-jaʿalnā maʿahū ʾakhāhu hārūna wazīran
Certainly We gave Moses the Book and We made Aaron, his brother, accompany him as a minister.
36
fa-qulnā dhhabā ʾilā l-qawmi lladhīna kadhdhabū bi-ʾāyātinā fa-dammarnāhum tadmīran
Then We said, ‘Let the two of you go to the people who have denied Our signs.’ Then We destroyed them utterly.
37
wa-qawma nūḥin lammā kadhdhabū r-rusula ʾaghraqnāhum wa-jaʿalnāhum li-n-nāsi ʾāyatan wa-ʾaʿtadnā li-ẓ-ẓālimīna ʿadhāban ʾalīman
And Noah’s people, We drowned them when they impugned the apostles, and We made them a sign for mankind, and We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.
38
wa-ʿādan wa-thamūda wa-ʾaṣḥāba r-rassi wa-qurūnan bayna dhālika kathīran
And ʿĀd and Thamūd, and the inhabitants of Rass, and many generations between them.
39
wa-kullan ḍarabnā lahu l-ʾamthāla wa-kullan tabbarnā tatbīran
For each of them We drew examples, and each We destroyed utterly.
40
wa-la-qad ʾataw ʿalā l-qaryati llatī ʾumṭirat maṭara s-sawʾi ʾa-fa-lam yakūnū yarawnahā bal kānū lā yarjūna nushūran
Certainly they must have passed the town on which an evil shower was rained. Have they not seen it? Rather they did not expect resurrection.
41
wa-ʾidhā raʾawka ʾin yattakhidhūnaka ʾillā huzuwan ʾa-hādhā lladhī baʿatha llāhu rasūlan
When they see you they just take you in derision: ‘Is this the one whom Allah has sent as an apostle!?
42
ʾin kāda la-yuḍillunā ʿan ʾālihatinā law-lā ʾan ṣabarnā ʿalayhā wa-sawfa yaʿlamūna ḥīna yarawna l-ʿadhāba man ʾaḍallu sabīlan
Indeed he was about to lead us astray from our gods, had we not stood by them.’ Soon they will know, when they sight the punishment, who is further astray from the [right] way.
43
ʾa-raʾayta mani ttakhadha ʾilāhahū hawāhu ʾa-fa-ʾanta takūnu ʿalayhi wakīlan
Have you seen him who has taken his desire to be his god? Is it your duty to watch over him?
44
ʾam taḥsabu ʾanna ʾaktharahum yasmaʿūna ʾaw yaʿqilūna ʾin hum ʾillā ka-l-ʾanʿāmi bal hum ʾaḍallu sabīlan
Do you suppose that most of them listen or apply reason? They are just like cattle; rather they are further astray from the way.
45
ʾa-lam tara ʾilā rabbika kayfa madda ẓ-ẓilla wa-law shāʾa la-jaʿalahū sākinan thumma jaʿalnā sh-shamsa ʿalayhi dalīlan
Have you not regarded how your Lord spreads the twilight?1 (Had He wished He would have made it still.) Then We made the sun a beacon for it.This is in accordance with a tradition of al-Imam al-Bāqir (ʿa) in which ẓill is explained as the light during the hours between daybreak and sunrise (see Tafsīr al-Qummī). Or ‘extends the shadow.’
46
thumma qabaḍnāhu ʾilaynā qabḍan yasīran
Then We retract it toward Ourselves, with a gentle retracting.
47
wa-huwa lladhī jaʿala lakumu l-layla libāsan wa-n-nawma subātan wa-jaʿala n-nahāra nushūran
It is He who made for you the night as a covering and sleep for rest and He made the day a recall to life.
48
wa-huwa lladhī ʾarsala r-riyāḥa bushran bayna yaday raḥmatihī wa-ʾanzalnā mina s-samāʾi māʾan ṭahūran
And it is He who sends the winds as harbingers of His mercy, and We send down from the sky purifying water,
49
li-nuḥyiya bihī baldatan maytan wa-nusqiyahū mimmā khalaqnā ʾanʿāman wa-ʾanāsiyya kathīran
with which We revive a dead country and provide water to many of the cattle and humans We have created.
50
wa-la-qad ṣarrafnāhu baynahum li-yadhdhakkarū fa-ʾabā ʾaktharu n-nāsi ʾillā kufūran
Certainly We distribute it among them so that they may take admonition. But most people are only intent on ingratitude.
51
wa-law shiʾnā la-baʿathnā fī kulli qaryatin nadhīran
Had We wished, We would have sent a warner to every town.
52
fa-lā tuṭiʿi l-kāfirīna wa-jāhidhum bihī jihādan kabīran
So do not obey the faithless, but wage against them a great jihād with it.1That is, with the help of the Qurʾān.
53
wa-huwa lladhī maraja l-baḥrayni hādhā ʿadhbun furātun wa-hādhā milḥun ʾujājun wa-jaʿala baynahumā barzakhan wa-ḥijran maḥjūran
It is He who merged the two seas: this one sweet and agreeable, and that one briny and bitter, and between the two He set a barrier and a forbidding hindrance.
54
wa-huwa lladhī khalaqa mina l-māʾi basharan fa-jaʿalahū nasaban wa-ṣihran wa-kāna rabbuka qadīran
It is He who created the human being from water, then invested him with ties of blood and marriage, and your Lord is all-powerful.
55

wa-yaʿbudūna min dūni llāhi mā lā yanfaʿuhum wa-lā yaḍurruhum wa-kāna l-kāfiru ʿalā rabbihī ẓahīran

He, who created the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them in six days, and then settled on the Throne, the All-beneficent; so ask someone who is well aware about Him.1Or, ‘about it,’ that is, about the creation of the heavens and the earth, or the meaning of the Throne.
