Surah 23
AL-MUʾMINŪN
THE FAITHFUL
meccan 118 Verses
The surah that declares the ultimate success of the faithful - the believers in One God, without partner, and that describes the irreproachable of their spiritual and moral virtues. It takes its name from verse 1 which mentions the faithful (muʾminūn). The surah stresses that the believers are the ones who will succeed, whereas the disbelievers will be punished for their arrogance and derision. Several proofs are given of God’s Oneness and His power, and the inevitability of the Resurrection is emphasized. The surah is also known as: The Believers, The True Believers.

6

wa-la-qad khalaqnā l-ʾinsāna min sulālatin min ṭīnin

Certainly We created man from an extract of clay.
13

thumma jaʿalnāhu nuṭfatan fī qarārin makīnin

Then We made him a drop of [seminal] fluid [lodged] in a secure abode.
14

thumma khalaqnā n-nuṭfata ʿalaqatan fa-khalaqnā l-ʿalaqata muḍghatan fa-khalaqnā l-muḍghata ʿiẓāman fa-kasawnā l-ʿiẓāma laḥman thumma ʾanshaʾnāhu khalqan ʾākhara fa-tabāraka llāhu ʾaḥsanu l-khāliqīna

Then We created the drop of fluid as a clinging mass. Then We created the clinging mass as a fleshy tissue. Then We created the fleshy tissue as bones. Then We clothed the bones with flesh. Then We produced him as [yet] another creature. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators!
15

thumma ʾinnakum baʿda dhālika la-mayyitūna

Then indeed you die after that.
16

Then you will indeed be raised up on the Day of Resurrection.
17

wa-la-qad khalaqnā fawqakum sabʿa ṭarāʾiqa wa-mā kunnā ʿani l-khalqi ghāfilīna

Certainly We created above you the seven tiers1 and We have not been oblivious of creation.Apparently, a reference to the seven heavens. Or, ‘seven tracks.’
18

wa-ʾanzalnā mina s-samāʾi māʾan bi-qadarin fa-ʾaskannāhu fī l-ʾarḍi wa-ʾinnā ʿalā dhahābin bihī la-qādirūna

We sent down water from the sky in a measured manner, and We lodged it within the ground, and We are indeed able to take it away.
19

fa-ʾanshaʾnā lakum bihī jannātin min nakhīlin wa-ʾaʿnābin lakum fīhā fawākihu kathīratun wa-minhā taʾkulūna

Then with it We produced for you gardens of date palms and vines. There are abundant fruits in them for you, and you eat from them.
20

wa-shajaratan takhruju min ṭūri saynāʾa tanbutu bi-d-duhni wa-ṣibghin li-l-ʾākilīna

And a tree that grows on Mount Sinai which produces oil and a seasoning for those who eat.
21

wa-ʾinna lakum fī l-ʾanʿāmi la-ʿibratan nusqīkum mimmā fī buṭūnihā wa-lakum fīhā manāfiʿu kathīratun wa-minhā taʾkulūna

There is indeed a moral for you in the cattle: We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies, and you have many uses in them, and you eat some of them,
22

wa-ʿalayhā wa-ʿalā l-fulki tuḥmalūna

and you are carried on them and on ships.
23

wa-la-qad ʾarsalnā nūḥan ʾilā qawmihī fa-qāla yā-qawmi ʿbudū llāha mā lakum min ʾilāhin ghayruhū ʾa-fa-lā tattaqūna

Certainly We sent Noah to his people, and he said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other god besides Him. Will you not then be wary [of Him]?’
24

fa-qāla l-malaʾu lladhīna kafarū min qawmihī mā hādhā ʾillā basharun mithlukum yurīdu ʾan yatafaḍḍala ʿalaykum wa-law shāʾa llāhu la-ʾanzala malāʾikatan mā samiʿnā bi-hādhā fī ʾābāʾinā l-ʾawwalīna

But the elite of the faithless from among his people said, ‘This is just a human being like you, who seeks to dominate you. Had Allah wished, He would have sent down angels. We never heard of such a thing among our forefathers.
25

ʾin huwa ʾillā rajulun bihī jinnatun fa-tarabbaṣū bihī ḥattā ḥīnin

He is just a man possessed by madness. So bear with him for a while.’
26

qāla rabbi nṣurnī bi-mā kadhdhabūni

He said, ‘My Lord! Help me, as they impugn me.’
27

fa-ʾawḥaynā ʾilayhi ʾani ṣnaʿi l-fulka bi-ʾaʿyuninā wa-waḥyinā fa-ʾidhā jāʾa ʾamrunā wa-fāra t-tannūru fa-sluk fīhā min kullin zawjayni thnayni wa-ʾahlaka ʾillā man sabaqa ʿalayhi l-qawlu minhum wa-lā tukhāṭibnī fī lladhīna ẓalamū ʾinnahum mughraqūna

So We revealed to him: ‘Build the ark before Our eyes and by Our revelation. When Our edict comes and the oven gushes [a stream of water], bring into it a pair of every kind1 [of animal], and your family, except those of them against whom the decree has gone beforehand, and do not plead with Me for those who are wrongdoers: they shall indeed be drowned.’Or ‘bring into it, of every kind [of animal], two mates.’
28

fa-ʾidhā stawayta ʾanta wa-man maʿaka ʿalā l-fulki fa-quli l-ḥamdu li-llāhi lladhī najjānā mina l-qawmi ẓ-ẓālimīna

‘When you, and those who are with you, are settled in the ark, say, “All praise belongs to Allah, who has delivered us from the wrongdoing lot.”
29

wa-qul rabbi ʾanzilnī munzalan mubārakan wa-ʾanta khayru l-munzilīna

And say, “My Lord! Land me with a blessed landing, for You are the best of those who bring ashore.” ’
30

ʾinna fī dhālika la-ʾāyātin wa-ʾin kunnā la-mubtalīna

There are indeed signs in this; and indeed We have been testing.
31

thumma ʾanshaʾnā min baʿdihim qarnan ʾākharīna

Then after them We brought forth another generation,
32

fa-ʾarsalnā fīhim rasūlan minhum ʾani ʿbudū llāha mā lakum min ʾilāhin ghayruhū ʾa-fa-lā tattaqūna

and We sent them an apostle from among themselves, saying, ‘Worship Allah! You have no other god besides Him. Will you not then be wary [of Him]?’
33

wa-qāla l-malaʾu min qawmihi lladhīna kafarū wa-kadhdhabū bi-liqāʾi l-ʾākhirati wa-ʾatrafnāhum fī l-ḥayāti d-dunyā mā hādhā ʾillā basharun mithlukum yaʾkulu mimmā taʾkulūna minhu wa-yashrabu mimmā tashrabūna

Said the elite of his people, who were faithless and who denied the encounter of the Hereafter and whom We had given affluence in the life of the world: ‘This is just a human being like you: he eats what you eat, and drinks what you drink.
34

wa-la-ʾin ʾaṭaʿtum basharan mithlakum ʾinnakum ʾidhan la-khāsirūna

If you obey a human being like yourselves, you will indeed be losers.
35

ʾa-yaʿidukum ʾannakum ʾidhā mittum wa-kuntum turāban wa-ʿiẓāman ʾannakum mukhrajūna

Does he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones you will indeed be raised [from the dead]?
36

hayhāta hayhāta li-mā tūʿadūna

Far-fetched, far-fetched is what you are promised!
37

ʾin hiya ʾillā ḥayātunā d-dunyā namūtu wa-naḥyā wa-mā naḥnu bi-mabʿūthīna

There is nothing but the life of this world: we live and we die, and we shall not be resurrected.
38

ʾin huwa ʾillā rajulun-i ftarā ʿalā llāhi kadhiban wa-mā naḥnu lahū bi-muʾminīna

He is just a man who has fabricated a lie against Allah, and we will not believe in him.’
39

qāla rabbi nṣurnī bi-mā kadhdhabūni

He said, ‘My Lord! Help me, as they impugn me.’
40

qāla ʿammā qalīlin la-yuṣbiḥunna nādimīna

He said, ‘In a little while they will become regretful.’
41

fa-ʾakhadhathumu ṣ-ṣayḥatu bi-l-ḥaqqi fa-jaʿalnāhum ghuthāʾan fa-buʿdan li-l-qawmi ẓ-ẓālimīna

So the Cry seized them justifiably and We turned them into a scum. So away with the wrongdoing lot!
42

thumma ʾanshaʾnā min baʿdihim qurūnan ʾākharīna

Then after them We brought forth other generations.
43

mā tasbiqu min ʾummatin ʾajalahā wa-mā yastaʾkhirūna

No nation can advance its time nor can it defer it.
44

thumma ʾarsalnā rusulanā tatrā kulla mā jāʾa ʾummatan rasūluhā kadhdhabūhu fa-ʾatbaʿnā baʿḍahum baʿḍan wa-jaʿalnāhum ʾaḥādītha fa-buʿdan li-qawmin lā yuʾminūna

Then We sent Our apostles successively. Whenever there came to a nation its apostle, they impugned him, so We made them follow one another [to extinction] and We turned them into folktales. So away with the faithless lot!
45

thumma ʾarsalnā mūsā wa-ʾakhāhu hārūna bi-ʾāyātinā wa-sulṭānin mubīnin

Then We sent Moses and Aaron, his brother, with Our signs and a manifest authority,
46

ʾilā firʿawna wa-malaʾihī fa-stakbarū wa-kānū qawman ʿālīna

to Pharaoh and his elites; but they acted arrogantly and they were a tyrannical lot.
47

fa-qālū ʾa-nuʾminu li-basharayni mithlinā wa-qawmuhumā lanā ʿābidūna

They said, ‘Shall we believe two humans like ourselves, while their people are our slaves?’
48

fa-kadhdhabūhumā fa-kānū mina l-muhlakīna

So they impugned the two of them, whereat they were among those who were destroyed.
49

wa-la-qad ʾātaynā mūsā l-kitāba laʿallahum yahtadūna

Certainly We gave Moses the Book so that they might be guided,
50

wa-jaʿalnā bna maryama wa-ʾummahū ʾāyatan wa-ʾāwaynāhumā ʾilā rabwatin dhāti qarārin wa-maʿīnin

and We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign, and sheltered them in a highland, level and watered by a stream.
51

yā-ʾayyuhā r-rusulu kulū mina ṭ-ṭayyibāti wa-ʿmalū ṣāliḥan ʾinnī bi-mā taʿmalūna ʿalīmun

O apostles! Eat of the good things and act righteously. Indeed I know best what you do.
52

wa-ʾinna hādhihī ʾummatukum ʾummatan wāḥidatan wa-ʾana rabbukum fa-ttaqūni

Indeed this community of yours is one community, and I am your Lord, so be wary of Me.
53

fa-taqaṭṭaʿū ʾamrahum baynahum zuburan kullu ḥizbin bi-mā ladayhim fariḥūna

But they fragmented their religion among themselves, each party exulting in what it had.
54

fa-dharhum fī ghamratihim ḥattā ḥīnin

So leave them in their stupor for a while.
55

ʾa-yaḥsabūna ʾannamā numidduhum bihī min mālin wa-banīna

Do they suppose that whatever aid We provide them in regard to wealth and children [is because]
56

nusāriʿu lahum fī l-khayrāti bal lā yashʿurūna

We are eager to bring them good? Rather they are not aware!
57

ʾinna lladhīna hum min khashyati rabbihim mushfiqūna

Indeed those who are apprehensive for the fear of their Lord,
58

wa-lladhīna hum bi-ʾāyāti rabbihim yuʾminūna

and who believe in the signs of their Lord,
59

wa-lladhīna hum bi-rabbihim lā yushrikūna

and who do not ascribe partners to their Lord;
60

wa-lladhīna yuʾtūna mā ʾātaw wa-qulūbuhum wajilatun ʾannahum ʾilā rabbihim rājiʿūna

and who give whatever they give while their hearts tremble with awe that they are going to return to their Lord
61

ʾulāʾika yusāriʿūna fī l-khayrāti wa-hum lahā sābiqūna

—it is they who are zealous in [performing] good works, and take the lead in them.
62

wa-lā nukallifu nafsan ʾillā wusʿahā wa-ladaynā kitābun yanṭiqu bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-hum lā yuẓlamūna

We task no soul except according to its capacity, and with Us is a book that speaks the truth, and they will not be wronged.
63

bal qulūbuhum fī ghamratin min hādhā wa-lahum ʾaʿmālun min dūni dhālika hum lahā ʿāmilūna

Rather their hearts are in a stupor in regard to this, and there are their other deeds besides which they perpetrate.
64

ḥattā ʾidhā ʾakhadhnā mutrafīhim bi-l-ʿadhābi ʾidhā hum yajʾarūna

When We seize their affluent ones with punishment, behold, they make entreaties [to Us].
65

lā tajʾarū l-yawma ʾinnakum minnā lā tunṣarūna

‘Do not make entreaties today! Indeed you will not receive any help from Us.
66

qad kānat ʾāyātī tutlā ʿalaykum fa-kuntum ʿalā ʾaʿqābikum tankiṣūna

Certainly My signs used to be recited to you, but you used to take to your heels,
67

mustakbirīna bihī sāmiran tahjurūna

being disdainful of it,1 talking nonsense in your nightly sessions.’That is, the Qurʾān. Or, ‘him,’ that is of the Prophet.
68

ʾa-fa-lam yaddabbarū l-qawla ʾam jāʾahum mā lam yaʾti ʾābāʾahumu l-ʾawwalīna

Have they not contemplated the discourse,1 or has anything come to them [in it] that did not come to their forefathers? That is, the Qurʾān. Cf. 4:82, 47:24.
69

ʾam lam yaʿrifū rasūlahum fa-hum lahū munkirūna

Is it that they do not recognize their apostle,1 and so they deny him?2That is, ‘Is the Apostle a stranger of an unknown background and a person unknown to them?’Or ‘and so they are not at home with him.’
70

ʾam yaqūlūna bihī jinnatun bal jāʾahum bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-ʾaktharuhum li-l-ḥaqqi kārihūna

Do they say, ‘There is madness in him’? Rather he has brought them the truth, and most of them are averse to the truth.
71

wa-lawi ttabaʿa l-ḥaqqu ʾahwāʾahum la-fasadati s-samāwātu wa-l-ʾarḍu wa-man fīhinna bal ʾataynāhum bi-dhikrihim fa-hum ʿan dhikrihim muʿriḍūna

Had the Truth followed their desires, the heavens and the earth would have surely fallen apart [along] with those who are in them. Rather We have brought them their reminder, but they are disregardful of their reminder.
72

ʾam tasʾaluhum kharjan fa-kharāju rabbika khayrun wa-huwa khayru r-rāziqīna

Do you ask a recompense from them? Yet your Lord’s recompense is better, and He is the best of providers.
73

wa-ʾinnaka la-tadʿūhum ʾilā ṣirāṭin mustaqīmin

Indeed you invite them to a straight path,
74

wa-ʾinna lladhīna lā yuʾminūna bi-l-ʾākhirati ʿani ṣ-ṣirāṭi la-nākibūna

and indeed those who do not believe in the Hereafter surely deviate from the path.
75

wa-law raḥimnāhum wa-kashafnā mā bihim min ḍurrin la-lajjū fī ṭughyānihim yaʿmahūna

Should We have mercy upon them and remove their distress from them, they would surely persist, bewildered in their rebellion.
76

wa-la-qad ʾakhadhnāhum bi-l-ʿadhābi fa-mā stakānū li-rabbihim wa-mā yataḍarraʿūna

Certainly We have seized them with punishment, yet they neither humbled themselves to their Lord, nor did they entreat [Him for mercy].
77

ḥattā ʾidhā fataḥnā ʿalayhim bāban dhā ʿadhābin shadīdin ʾidhā hum fīhi mublisūna

When We opened on them the door of a severe punishment, behold, they are despondent in it.
78

wa-huwa lladhī ʾanshaʾa lakumu s-samʿa wa-l-ʾabṣāra wa-l-ʾafʾidata qalīlan mā tashkurūna

It is He who made for you hearing, eyesight, and hearts. Little do you thank.
79

wa-huwa lladhī dharaʾakum fī l-ʾarḍi wa-ʾilayhi tuḥsharūna

It is He who created you on the earth, and you will be mustered toward Him.
80

wa-huwa lladhī yuḥyī wa-yumītu wa-lahu khtilāfu l-layli wa-n-nahāri ʾa-fa-lā taʿqilūna

And it is He who gives life and brings death and due to Him is the alternation of day and night. Do you not apply reason?
81

bal qālū mithla mā qāla l-ʾawwalūna

Rather they say just like what the ancients said.
82

qālū ʾa-ʾidhā mitnā wa-kunnā turāban wa-ʿiẓāman ʾa-ʾinnā la-mabʿūthūna

They said, ‘What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected?’
83

la-qad wuʿidnā naḥnu wa-ʾābāʾunā hādhā min qablu ʾin hādhā ʾillā ʾasāṭīru l-ʾawwalīna

Certainly we and our fathers were promised this before. [But] these are nothing but myths of the ancients.’
84

qul li-mani l-ʾarḍu wa-man fīhā ʾin kuntum taʿlamūna

Say, ‘To whom does the earth belong and whoever it contains, if you know?’
85

sa-yaqūlūna li-llāhi qul ʾa-fa-lā tadhakkarūna

They will say, ‘To Allah.’ Say, ‘Will you not then take admonition?’
86

qul man rabbu s-samāwāti s-sabʿi wa-rabbu l-ʿarshi l-ʿaẓīmi

Say, ‘Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the Great Throne?’
87

sa-yaqūlūna li-llāhi qul ʾa-fa-lā tattaqūna

They will say, ‘[They belong] to Allah.’ Say, ‘Will you not then be wary [of Him]?’
88

qul man bi-yadihī malakūtu kulli shayʾin wa-huwa yujīru wa-lā yujāru ʿalayhi ʾin kuntum taʿlamūna

Say, ‘In whose hand is the dominion of all things, and who shelters and no shelter can be provided from Him, if you know?’
89

sa-yaqūlūna li-llāhi qul fa-ʾannā tusḥarūna

They will say, ‘[They all belong] to Allah.’ Say, ‘Then how are you being deluded?’1Or ‘How are you being misled,’ or ‘How are you being rendered blind.’
90

bal ʾataynāhum bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-ʾinnahum la-kādhibūna

Rather We have brought them the truth, and they are indeed liars.
91

mā ttakhadha llāhu min waladin wa-mā kāna maʿahū min ʾilāhin ʾidhan la-dhahaba kullu ʾilāhin bi-mā khalaqa wa-la-ʿalā baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin subḥāna llāhi ʿammā yaṣifūna

Allah has not taken any offspring, neither is there any god besides Him, for then each god would take away what he created, and some of them would surely rise up against others. Clear is Allah of what they allege!
92

ʿālimi l-ghaybi wa-sh-shahādati fa-taʿālā ʿammā yushrikūna

The Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, He is above having any partners that they ascribe [to Him].
93

qul rabbi ʾimmā turiyannī mā yūʿadūna

Say, ‘My Lord! If You should show me what they are promised,
94

rabbi fa-lā tajʿalnī fī l-qawmi ẓ-ẓālimīna

then do not put me, my Lord, among the wrongdoing lot.’
95

wa-ʾinnā ʿalā ʾan nuriyaka mā naʿiduhum la-qādirūna

We are indeed able to show you what We promise them.
96

idfaʿ bi-llatī hiya ʾaḥsanu s-sayyiʾata naḥnu ʾaʿlamu bi-mā yaṣifūna

Repel ill [conduct] with that which is the best. We know best whatever they allege.
97

wa-qul rabbi ʾaʿūdhu bika min hamazāti sh-shayāṭīni

And say, ‘My Lord! I seek Your protection from the promptings of devils;
98

wa-ʾaʿūdhu bika rabbi ʾan yaḥḍurūni

and I seek Your protection, my Lord, from their presence near me.’
99

ḥattā ʾidhā jāʾa ʾaḥadahumu l-mawtu qāla rabbi rjiʿūni

When death comes to one of them, he says, ‘My Lord! Take me back,
100

laʿallī ʾaʿmalu ṣāliḥan fī-mā taraktu kallā ʾinnahā kalimatun huwa qāʾiluhā wa-min warāʾihim barzakhun ʾilā yawmi yubʿathūna

that I may act righteously in what I have left behind.’ ‘By no means! These are mere words that he says.’ And ahead of them is a barrier until the day they will be resurrected
101

fa-ʾidhā nufikha fī ṣ-ṣūri fa-lā ʾansāba baynahum yawmaʾidhin wa-lā yatasāʾalūna

And when the Trumpet is blown, there will be no ties between them on that day, nor will they ask [about] each other.1Cf. 70:10.
102

fa-man thaqulat mawāzīnuhū fa-ʾulāʾika humu l-mufliḥūna

Then those whose deeds weigh heavy in the scales —it is they who are the felicitous.
103

wa-man khaffat mawāzīnuhū fa-ʾulāʾika lladhīna khasirū ʾanfusahum fī jahannama khālidūna

As for those whose deeds weigh light in the scales, —they will be the ones who have ruined their souls, [and] they will remain in hell [forever].
104

talfaḥu wujūhahumu n-nāru wa-hum fīhā kāliḥūna

The Fire will scorch their faces, and they will be morose in it.
105

ʾa-lam takun ʾāyātī tutlā ʿalaykum fa-kuntum bihā tukadhdhibūna

‘Was it not that My signs were recited to you but you would deny them?’
106

qālū rabbanā ghalabat ʿalaynā shiqwatunā wa-kunnā qawman ḍāllīna

They will say, ‘Our Lord! Our wretchedness overcame us, and we were an astray lot.
107

rabbanā ʾakhrijnā minhā fa-ʾin ʿudnā fa-ʾinnā ẓālimūna

Our Lord! Bring us out of this! Then, if we revert, we will indeed be wrongdoers.’
108

qāla khsaʾū fīhā wa-lā tukallimūni

He will say, ‘Begone in it, and do not speak to Me!
109

ʾinnahū kāna farīqun min ʿibādī yaqūlūna rabbanā ʾāmannā fa-ghfir lanā wa-rḥamnā wa-ʾanta khayru r-rāḥimīna

Indeed there was a part of My servants who would say, “Our Lord! We have believed. So forgive us, and have mercy on us, and You are the best of the merciful.”
110

fa-ttakhadhtumūhum sikhriyyan ḥattā ʾansawkum dhikrī wa-kuntum minhum taḍḥakūna

But then you took them by ridicule until they made you forget My remembrance,1 and you used to laugh at them. That is, ‘your contemptuous attitude towards them made you oblivious of Me and My reminders and warnings.’
111

ʾinnī jazaytuhumu l-yawma bi-mā ṣabarū ʾannahum humu l-fāʾizūna

Indeed I have rewarded them today for their patience. They are indeed the triumphant.’
112

qāla kam labithtum fī l-ʾarḍi ʿadada sinīna

He will say, ‘How many years did you remain on earth?’
113

qālū labithnā yawman ʾaw baʿḍa yawmin fa-sʾali l-ʿāddīna

They will say, ‘We remained for a day, or part of a day; yet ask those who keep the count.’
114

qāla ʾin labithtum ʾillā qalīlan law ʾannakum kuntum taʿlamūna

He will say, ‘You only remained a little; if only you had known.
115

ʾa-fa-ḥasibtum ʾannamā khalaqnākum ʿabathan wa-ʾannakum ʾilaynā lā turjaʿūna

Did you suppose that We created you aimlessly, and that you will not be brought back to Us?’
116

fa-taʿālā llāhu l-maliku l-ḥaqqu lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa rabbu l-ʿarshi l-karīmi

So exalted is Allah, the True Sovereign, there is no god except Him, the Lord of the Noble Throne.
117

wa-man yadʿu maʿa llāhi ʾilāhan ʾākhara lā burhāna lahū bihī fa-ʾinnamā ḥisābuhū ʿinda rabbihī ʾinnahū lā yufliḥu l-kāfirūna

Whoever invokes besides Allah another god of which he has no proof, his reckoning will indeed rest with his Lord. Indeed the faithless will not be felicitous.
118

wa-qul rabbi ghfir wa-rḥam wa-ʾanta khayru r-rāḥimīna

Say, ‘My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful.’
