The surah wherein God commands Abraham to proclaim to all humanity the obligation of The Pilgrimage to the Ancient House of God—The Kaʿbah—in Mecca. Verse 26 . of this surah relate the ḥajj pilgrimage, after which it is named. This theme is introduced by the condemnation of those who bar the believers from access to the Sacred Mosque and is followed by permission to fight when attacked. It begins with the Day of Judgement and castigates those who worship useless idols, describing them later as powerless to create even a fly. The surah ends by urging the Muslims to persevere in following the faith of Abraham. The surah is also known as: The Hajj-Pilgrimage, Tile Pilgrimage.
1
yā-ʾayyuhā n-nāsu ttaqū rabbakum ʾinna zalzalata s-sāʿati shayʾun ʿaẓīmun
O mankind! Be wary of your Lord! Indeed the quake of the Hour is a terrible thing.
2
yawma tarawnahā tadhhalu kullu murḍiʿatin ʿammā ʾarḍaʿat wa-taḍaʿu kullu dhāti ḥamlin ḥamlahā wa-tarā n-nāsa sukārā wa-mā hum bi-sukārā wa-lākinna ʿadhāba llāhi shadīdun
The day that you will see it, every suckling female will neglect what she suckled, and every pregnant female will deliver her burden, and you will see the people drunk, yet they will not be drunken, but Allah’s punishment is severe.
3
wa-mina n-nāsi man yujādilu fī llāhi bi-ghayri ʿilmin wa-yattabiʿu kulla shayṭānin marīdin
Among the people are those who dispute about Allah without any knowledge, and follow every froward devil,
4
kutiba ʿalayhi ʾannahū man tawallāhu fa-ʾannahū yuḍilluhū wa-yahdīhi ʾilā ʿadhābi s-saʿīri
about whom it has been decreed that should anyone take him for a friend, he will lead him astray, and conduct him toward the punishment of the Blaze.
5
yā-ʾayyuhā n-nāsu ʾin kuntum fī raybin mina l-baʿthi fa-ʾinnā khalaqnākum min turābin thumma min nuṭfatin thumma min ʿalaqatin thumma min muḍghatin mukhallaqatin wa-ghayri mukhallaqatin li-nubayyina lakum wa-nuqirru fī l-ʾarḥāmi mā nashāʾu ʾilā ʾajalin musamman thumma nukhrijukum ṭiflan thumma li-tablughū ʾashuddakum wa-minkum man yutawaffā wa-minkum man yuraddu ʾilā ʾardhali l-ʿumuri li-kay-lā yaʿlama min baʿdi ʿilmin shayʾan wa-tarā l-ʾarḍa hāmidatan fa-ʾidhā ʾanzalnā ʿalayhā l-māʾa htazzat wa-rabat wa-ʾanbatat min kulli zawjin bahījin
O people! If you are in doubt about the resurrection, [consider that] We indeed created you from dust, then from a drop of [seminal] fluid, then from a clinging mass,1 then from a fleshy tissue,2 partly formed and partly unformed, so that We may manifest [Our power] to you. We establish in the wombs whatever We wish for a specified term, then We bring you forth as infants, then [We rear you] so that you may come of age. [Then] there are some of you who are taken away, and there are some of you who are relegated to the nethermost age, so that he knows nothing after [having possessed] some knowledge. And you see the earth torpid, yet when We send down water upon it, it stirs and swells, and grows every delightful kind [of plant].That is, an embryo; cf. 23:13-14; 40:67; 75:38.That is, the fetus in the early stages of its development; cf. 23:13.
6
dhālika bi-ʾanna llāha huwa l-ḥaqqu wa-ʾannahū yuḥyi l-mawtā wa-ʾannahū ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun
That is because Allah is the Reality and it is He who revives the dead, and He has power over all things,
7
wa-ʾanna s-sāʿata ʾātiyatun lā rayba fīhā wa-ʾanna llāha yabʿathu man fī l-qubūri
and the Hour is bound to come, there is no doubt in it, and Allah will resurrect those who are in the graves.
8
wa-mina n-nāsi man yujādilu fī llāhi bi-ghayri ʿilmin wa-lā hudan wa-lā kitābin munīrin
Among the people are those who dispute concerning Allah without any knowledge or guidance, or an enlightening Book,
9
thāniya ʿiṭfihī li-yuḍilla ʿan sabīli llāhi lahū fī d-dunyā khizyun wa-nudhīquhū yawma l-qiyāmati ʿadhāba l-ḥarīqi
turning aside disdainfully to lead [others] astray from the way of Allah. For such there is disgrace in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection We will make him taste the punishment of the burning:
10
dhālika bi-mā qaddamat yadāka wa-ʾanna llāha laysa bi-ẓallāmin li-l-ʿabīdi
‘That is because of what your hands have sent ahead,1 and because Allah is not tyrannical to the servants.’Or ‘prepared,’ or ‘committed.’
11
wa-mina n-nāsi man yaʿbudu llāha ʿalā ḥarfin fa-ʾin ʾaṣābahū khayrun ʾiṭmaʾanna bihī wa-ʾin ʾaṣābathu fitnatun-i nqalaba ʿalā wajhihī khasira d-dunyā wa-l-ʾākhirata dhālika huwa l-khusrānu l-mubīnu
And among the people are those who worship Allah on the [very] fringe: if good fortune befalls him, he is content with it; but if an ordeal visits him he makes a turnabout, to become a loser in the world and the Hereafter. That is the manifest loss.
12
yadʿū min dūni llāhi mā lā yaḍurruhū wa-mā lā yanfaʿuhū dhālika huwa ḍ-ḍalālu l-baʿīdu
He invokes besides Allah that which can bring him neither benefit nor harm. That is extreme error.
13
He invokes someone whose harm is surely likelier than his benefit. Surely an evil ally and an evil companion!
14
ʾinna llāha yudkhilu lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru ʾinna llāha yafʿalu mā yurīdu
Allah will indeed admit those who have faith and do righteous deeds into gardens with streams running in them. Indeed Allah does whatever He desires.
15
man kāna yaẓunnu ʾan lan yanṣurahu llāhu fī d-dunyā wa-l-ʾākhirati fa-l-yamdud bi-sababin ʾilā s-samāʾi thumma l-yaqṭaʿ fa-l-yanẓur hal yudhhibanna kayduhū mā yaghīẓu
Whoever thinks that Allah will not help him in this world and the Hereafter, let him extend a rope to the ceiling and hang himself, and see if his artifice would remove his rage.
16
wa-ka-dhālika ʾanzalnāhu ʾāyātin bayyinātin wa-ʾanna llāha yahdī man yurīdu
Thus have We sent it down as manifest signs, and indeed Allah guides whomever He desires.
17
ʾinna lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-lladhīna hādū wa-ṣ-ṣābiʾīna wa-n-naṣārā wa-l-majūsa wa-lladhīna ʾashrakū ʾinna llāha yafṣilu baynahum yawma l-qiyāmati ʾinna llāha ʿalā kulli shayʾin shahīdun
Indeed the faithful, the Jews, the Sabaeans, the Christians, the Magians and the polytheists —Allah will indeed judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allah is witness to all things.
18
ʾa-lam tara ʾanna llāha yasjudu lahū man fī s-samāwāti wa-man fī l-ʾarḍi wa-sh-shamsu wa-l-qamaru wa-n-nujūmu wa-l-jibālu wa-sh-shajaru wa-d-dawābbu wa-kathīrun mina n-nāsi wa-kathīrun ḥaqqa ʿalayhi l-ʿadhābu wa-man yuhini llāhu fa-mā lahū min mukrimin ʾinna llāha yafʿalu mā yashāʾu
Have you not regarded that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, and the sun, the moon, and the stars, the mountains, the trees, and the animals and many of mankind? And for many the punishment has become due. Whomever Allah humiliates will find no one who may bring him honour. Indeed Allah does whatever He wishes.
19
hādhāni khaṣmāni khtaṣamū fī rabbihim fa-lladhīna kafarū quṭṭiʿat lahum thiyābun min nārin yuṣabbu min fawqi ruʾūsihimu l-ḥamīmu
These two contenders contend concerning their Lord. As for those who are faithless, cloaks of fire will be cut out for them, and boiling water will be poured over their heads,
20
yuṣharu bihī mā fī buṭūnihim wa-l-julūdu
with which their skins and entrails will be fused,
21
wa-lahum maqāmiʿu min ḥadīdin
and there will be clubs of iron for them.
22
kullamā ʾarādū ʾan yakhrujū minhā min ghammin ʾuʿīdū fīhā wa-dhūqū ʿadhāba l-ḥarīqi
Whenever they desire to leave it out of anguish, they will be turned back into it [and told]: ‘Taste the punishment of the burning!’
23
ʾinna llāha yudkhilu lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru yuḥallawna fīhā min ʾasāwira min dhahabin wa-luʾluʾan wa-libāsuhum fīhā ḥarīrun
Indeed Allah will admit those who have faith and do righteous deeds into gardens with streams running in them, adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their dress therein will be silk.
24
wa-hudū ʾilā ṭ-ṭayyibi mina l-qawli wa-hudū ʾilā ṣirāṭi l-ḥamīdi
They shall be guided to the purest speech, and guided to the path of the All-laudable.
25
ʾinna lladhīna kafarū wa-yaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli llāhi wa-l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi lladhī jaʿalnāhu li-n-nāsi sawāʾan-i l-ʿākifu fīhi wa-l-bādi wa-man yurid fīhi bi-ʾilḥādin bi-ẓulmin nudhiqhu min ʿadhābin ʾalīmin
Indeed those who are faithless and who bar from the way of Allah and the Sacred Mosque, which We have assigned for all the people, the native and the visitor being equal therein —whoever seeks to commit therein sacrilege with the intent of wrongdoing, We shall make him taste a painful punishment.
26
wa-ʾidh bawwaʾnā li-ʾibrāhīma makāna l-bayti ʾan lā tushrik bī shayʾan wa-ṭahhir baytiya li-ṭ-ṭāʾifīna wa-l-qāʾimīna wa-r-rukkaʿi s-sujūdi
When We settled for Abraham the site of the House [saying], Do not ascribe any partners to Me, and purify My House for those who go around it, and those who stand [in it for prayer], and those who bow and prostrate.
27
wa-ʾadhdhin fī n-nāsi bi-l-ḥajji yaʾtūka rijālan wa-ʿalā kulli ḍāmirin yaʾtīna min kulli fajjin ʿamīqin
And proclaim the ḥajj to people: they shall come to you on foot and on lean camels coming from distant places,
28
li-yashhadū manāfiʿa lahum wa-yadhkurū sma llāhi fī ʾayyāmin maʿlūmātin ʿalā mā razaqahum min bahīmati l-ʾanʿāmi fa-kulū minhā wa-ʾaṭʿimū l-bāʾisa l-faqīra
that they may witness the benefits for them, and mention Allah’s Name during the known days over the livestock He has provided them. So eat thereof, and feed the destitute.
29
thumma l-yaqḍū tafathahum wa-l-yūfū nudhūrahum wa-l-yaṭṭawwafū bi-l-bayti l-ʿatīqi
Then let them do away with their untidiness,1 and fulfill their vows, and go around the Ancient House.2According to the commentators, the phrase li yaqḍū tafathahum implies egress from the state of iḥrām (after the shortening of the hair or the nails, and the bath), and relief from its restrictions. Or it means ‘let them perform their rites.’Or, ‘the Free House,’ that is, free from bondage of anyone’s ownership.
30
dhālika wa-man yuʿaẓẓim ḥurumāti llāhi fa-huwa khayrun lahū ʿinda rabbihī wa-ʾuḥillat lakumu l-ʾanʿāmu ʾillā mā yutlā ʿalaykum fa-jtanibū r-rijsa mina l-ʾawthāni wa-jtanibū qawla z-zūri
That. And whoever venerates the sacraments of Allah, that is better for him with his Lord. You are permitted [animals of] grazing livestock except for what will be recited to you. So avoid the abomination of idols, and avoid false speech,
31
ḥunafāʾa li-llāhi ghayra mushrikīna bihī wa-man yushrik bi-llāhi fa-ka-ʾannamā kharra mina s-samāʾi fa-takhṭafuhu ṭ-ṭayru ʾaw tahwī bihi r-rīḥu fī makānin saḥīqin
as persons having pure faith in Allah, not ascribing partners to Him. Whoever ascribes partners to Allah is as though he had fallen from a height to be devoured by vultures, or to be blown away by the wind far and wide.
32
dhālika wa-man yuʿaẓẓim shaʿāʾira llāhi fa-ʾinnahā min taqwā l-qulūbi
That. And whoever venerates the sacraments of Allah —indeed that arises from the Godwariness of hearts.
33
lakum fīhā manāfiʿu ʾilā ʾajalin musamman thumma maḥilluhā ʾilā l-bayti l-ʿatīqi
You may benefit from them until a specified time.1 Then their place of sacrifice is by the Ancient House. That is, you may benefit from the sacrificial animals, such as by using them as mounts or milking them, until they arrive at the place where they are to be sacrificed.
34
wa-li-kulli ʾummatin jaʿalnā mansakan li-yadhkurū sma llāhi ʿalā mā razaqahum min bahīmati l-ʾanʿāmi fa-ʾilāhukum ʾilāhun wāḥidun fa-lahū ʾaslimū wa-bashshiri l-mukhbitīna
For every nation We have appointed a rite that they might mention Allah’s Name over the livestock He has provided them. Your God is the One God. So submit to Him. And give good news to the humble
35
alladhīna ʾidhā dhukira llāhu wajilat qulūbuhum wa-ṣ-ṣābirīna ʿalā mā ʾaṣābahum wa-l-muqīmī ṣ-ṣalāti wa-mimmā razaqnāhum yunfiqūna
—those whose hearts tremble with awe when Allah is mentioned, and who are patient through whatever visits them, and who maintain the prayer and spend out of what We have provided them.
36
wa-l-budna jaʿalnāhā lakum min shaʿāʾiri llāhi lakum fīhā khayrun fa-dhkurū sma llāhi ʿalayhā ṣawāffa fa-ʾidhā wajabat junūbuhā fa-kulū minhā wa-ʾaṭʿimū l-qāniʿa wa-l-muʿtarra ka-dhālika sakhkharnāhā lakum laʿallakum tashkurūna
We have appointed for you the [sacrificial] camels as one of Allah’s sacraments. There is good for you in them. So mention the Name of Allah over them as they stand. And when they have fallen on their flanks, eat from them, and feed the self-contained needy and the mendicant. Thus have We disposed them for your benefit so that you may give thanks.
37
lan yanāla llāha luḥūmuhā wa-lā dimāʾuhā wa-lākin yanāluhu t-taqwā minkum ka-dhālika sakhkharahā lakum li-tukabbirū llāha ʿalā mā hadākum wa-bashshiri l-muḥsinīna
It is not their flesh or their blood that reaches Allah. Rather it is your Godwariness that reaches Him. Thus has He disposed them for your benefit so that you may magnify Allah for His guiding you. And give good news to the virtuous.
38
ʾinna llāha yudāfiʿu ʿani lladhīna ʾāmanū ʾinna llāha lā yuḥibbu kulla khawwānin kafūrin
Allah indeed defends those who have faith. Indeed Allah does not like any ingrate traitor.
39
ʾudhina li-lladhīna yuqātalūna bi-ʾannahum ẓulimū wa-ʾinna llāha ʿalā naṣrihim la-qadīrun-i
Those who are fought against are permitted [to fight] because they have been wronged, and Allah is indeed able to help them.

alladhīna ʾukhrijū min diyārihim bi-ghayri ḥaqqin ʾillā ʾan yaqūlū rabbunā llāhu wa-law-lā dafʿu llāhi n-nāsa baʿḍahum bi-baʿḍin la-huddimat ṣawāmiʿu wa-biyaʿun wa-ṣalawātun wa-masājidu yudhkaru fīhā smu llāhi kathīran wa-la-yanṣuranna llāhu man yanṣuruhū ʾinna llāha la-qawiyyun ʿazīzun-i
—Those who were expelled from their homes unjustly, only because they said, ‘Allah is our Lord.’ Had not Allah repulsed the people from one another, ruin would have befallen the monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques in which Allah’s Name is mentioned greatly. Allah will surely help those who help Him. Indeed Allah is all-strong, all-mighty.
41
alladhīna ʾin makkannāhum fī l-ʾarḍi ʾaqāmū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ʾātawu z-zakāta wa-ʾamarū bi-l-maʿrūfi wa-nahaw ʿani l-munkari wa-li-llāhi ʿāqibatu l-ʾumūri
Those who, if We granted them power in the land, maintain the prayer, give the zakāt, and bid what is right and forbid what is wrong. And with Allah rests the outcome of all matters.
42
wa-ʾin yukadhdhibūka fa-qad kadhdhabat qablahum qawmu nūḥin wa-ʿādun wa-thamūdu
If they impugn you, the people of Noah have impugned before them and ʿĀd and Thamūd
43
wa-qawmu ʾibrāhīma wa-qawmu lūṭin
[as well as] the people of Abraham and the people of Lot,
44
wa-ʾaṣḥābu madyana wa-kudhdhiba mūsā fa-ʾamlaytu li-l-kāfirīna thumma ʾakhadhtuhum fa-kayfa kāna nakīri
and the inhabitants of Midian, and Moses was also impugned. But I gave the faithless a respite, then I seized them and how was My rebuttal!
45
fa-ka-ʾayyin min qaryatin ʾahlaknāhā wa-hiya ẓālimatun fa-hiya khāwiyatun ʿalā ʿurūshihā wa-biʾrin muʿaṭṭalatin wa-qaṣrin mashīdin
How many towns We have destroyed while they were wrongdoers! So they lie fallen on their trellises, their wells neglected and their lofty palaces [desolate]!
46
ʾa-fa-lam yasīrū fī l-ʾarḍi fa-takūna lahum qulūbun yaʿqilūna bihā ʾaw ʾādhānun yasmaʿūna bihā fa-ʾinnahā lā taʿmā l-ʾabṣāru wa-lākin taʿmā l-qulūbu llatī fī ṣ-ṣudūri
Have they not traveled over the land so that they may have hearts by which they may apply reason, or ears by which they may hear? Indeed it is not the eyes that turn blind, but the hearts turn blind —those that are in the breasts!
47
wa-yastaʿjilūnaka bi-l-ʿadhābi wa-lan yukhlifa llāhu waʿdahū wa-ʾinna yawman ʿinda rabbika ka-ʾalfi sanatin mimmā taʿuddūna
They ask you to hasten the punishment, though Allah shall never break His promise. Indeed a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of your reckoning.
48
wa-ka-ʾayyin min qaryatin ʾamlaytu lahā wa-hiya ẓālimatun thumma ʾakhadhtuhā wa-ʾilayya l-maṣīru
To how many a town did I give respite while it was wrongdoing! Then I seized it, and toward Me is the destination.
49
qul yā-ʾayyuhā n-nāsu ʾinnamā ʾana lakum nadhīrun mubīnun
Say, ‘O mankind! I am only a manifest warner to you!’
50
fa-lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti lahum maghfiratun wa-rizqun karīmun
As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, for them is forgiveness and a noble provision.
51
wa-lladhīna saʿaw fī ʾāyātinā muʿājizīna ʾulāʾika ʾaṣḥābu l-jaḥīmi
But as for those who contend with Our signs, seeking to thwart [their purpose], they shall be the inmates of hell.
52
wa-mā ʾarsalnā min qablika min rasūlin wa-lā nabiyyin ʾillā ʾidhā tamannā ʾalqā sh-shayṭānu fī ʾumniyyatihī fa-yansakhu llāhu mā yulqī sh-shayṭānu thumma yuḥkimu llāhu ʾāyātihī wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun
We did not send before you any apostle or prophet but that when he recited [the scripture] Satan interjected [something] in his recitation. Thereat Allah nullifies whatever Satan has interjected, [and] then Allah confirms His signs, and Allah is All-knowing, All-wise.
53
li-yajʿala mā yulqī sh-shayṭānu fitnatan li-llādhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun wa-l-qāsiyati qulūbuhum wa-ʾinna ẓ-ẓālimīna la-fī shiqāqin baʿīdin
That He may make what Satan has thrown in a trial for those in whose hearts is a sickness and those whose hearts have hardened. Indeed the wrongdoers are steeped in extreme defiance.
54
wa-li-yaʿlama lladhīna ʾūtū l-ʿilma ʾannahu l-ḥaqqu min rabbika fa-yuʾminū bihī fa-tukhbita lahū qulūbuhum wa-ʾinna llāha la-hādi lladhīna ʾāmanū ʾilā ṣirāṭin mustaqīmin
That those who have been given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord, and so they may have faith in it, and their hearts may be humbled before Him. Indeed Allah guides those who have faith to a straight path.
55
wa-lā yazālu lladhīna kafarū fī miryatin minhu ḥattā taʾtiyahumu s-sāʿatu baghtatan ʾaw yaʾtiyahum ʿadhābu yawmin ʿaqīmin-i
Those who are faithless persist in their doubt about it, until the Hour overtakes them suddenly, or they are overtaken by the punishment of an inauspicious day.
56
al-mulku yawmaʾidhin li-llāhi yaḥkumu baynahum fa-lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti fī jannāti n-naʿīmi
On that day all sovereignty will belong to Allah: He will judge between them. Then those who have faith and do righteous deeds will be in gardens of bliss,
57
wa-lladhīna kafarū wa-kadhdhabū bi-ʾāyātinā fa-ʾulāʾika lahum ʿadhābun muhīnun
and those who are faithless and who deny Our signs —for such there will be a humiliating punishment.
58
wa-lladhīna hājarū fī sabīli llāhi thumma qutilū ʾaw mātū la-yarzuqannahumu llāhu rizqan ḥasanan wa-ʾinna llāha la-huwa khayru r-rāziqīna
Those who migrate in the way of Allah and then are slain, or die, Allah will surely provide them with a good provision. Allah is indeed the best of providers.
59
la-yudkhilannahum mudkhalan yarḍawnahū wa-ʾinna llāha la-ʿalīmun ḥalīmun
He will admit them into an abode they are pleased with. Indeed Allah is all-knowing, all-forbearing.
60
dhālika wa-man ʿāqaba bi-mithli mā ʿūqiba bihī thumma bughiya ʿalayhi la-yanṣurannahu llāhu ʾinna llāha la-ʿafuwwun ghafūrun
That; and whoever retaliates with the like of what he has been made to suffer, and then is [again] aggressed against, Allah will surely help him. Indeed Allah is all-excusing, all-forgiving.
61
dhālika bi-ʾanna llāha yūliju l-layla fī n-nahāri wa-yūliju n-nahāra fī l-layli wa-ʾanna llāha samīʿun baṣīrun
That is because Allah makes the night pass into the day and makes the day pass into the night, and because Allah is all-hearing, all-seeing.
62
dhālika bi-ʾanna llāha huwa l-ḥaqqu wa-ʾanna mā yadʿūna min dūnihī huwa l-bāṭilu wa-ʾanna llāha huwa l-ʿaliyyu l-kabīru
That is because Allah is the Reality, and what they invoke besides Him is nullity, and because Allah is the All-exalted, the All-great.
63
ʾa-lam tara ʾanna llāha ʾanzala mina s-samāʾi māʾan fa-tuṣbiḥu l-ʾarḍu mukhḍarratan ʾinna llāha laṭīfun khabīrun
Have you not regarded that Allah sends down water from the sky, whereupon the earth turns green? Indeed Allah is all-attentive, all-aware.
64
lahū mā fī s-samāwāti wa-mā fī l-ʾarḍi wa-ʾinna llāha la-huwa l-ghaniyyu l-ḥamīdu
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, Indeed Allah is the All-sufficient, the All-laudable.
65
ʾa-lam tara ʾanna llāha sakhkhara lakum mā fī l-ʾarḍi wa-l-fulka tajrī fī l-baḥri bi-ʾamrihī wa-yumsiku s-samāʾa ʾan taqaʿa ʿalā l-ʾarḍi ʾillā bi-ʾidhnihī ʾinna llāha bi-n-nāsi la-raʾūfun raḥīmun
Have you not regarded that Allah has disposed for you[r benefit] whatever there is in the earth, and [that] the ships sail at sea by His command, and He sustains the sky lest it should fall on the earth, excepting [when it does so] by His leave? Indeed Allah is most kind and merciful to mankind.
66
wa-huwa lladhī ʾaḥyākum thumma yumītukum thumma yuḥyīkum ʾinna l-ʾinsāna la-kafūrun
It is He who gave you life then He makes you die, then He brings you to life. Indeed man is very ungrateful.
67
li-kulli ʾummatin jaʿalnā mansakan hum nāsikūhu fa-lā yunāziʿunnaka fī l-ʾamri wa-dʿu ʾilā rabbika ʾinnaka la-ʿalā hudan mustaqīmin
For every nation We had appointed a rite [of worship] which they used to observe; so let them not dispute with you about the matter.1 And invite to your Lord. Indeed you are on a straight guidance.Or ‘the Law.’
68
wa-ʾin jādalūka fa-quli llāhu ʾaʿlamu bi-mā taʿmalūna
And if they dispute with you, say, ‘Allah knows best what you are doing.
69
allāhu yaḥkumu baynakum yawma l-qiyāmati fī-mā kuntum fīhi takhtalifūna
Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection concerning that about which you used to differ.’
70
ʾa-lam taʿlam ʾanna llāha yaʿlamu mā fī s-samāʾi wa-l-ʾarḍi ʾinna dhālika fī kitābin ʾinna dhālika ʿalā llāhi yasīrun
Do you not know that Allah knows whatever there is in the sky and the earth? That is indeed in a Book. That is indeed easy for Allah.
71
wa-yaʿbudūna min dūni llāhi mā lam yunazzil bihī sulṭānan wa-mā laysa lahum bihī ʿilmun wa-mā li-ẓ-ẓālimīna min naṣīrin
They worship besides Allah that for which He has not sent down any authority, and of which they have no knowledge. And the wrongdoers shall have no helper.
72
wa-ʾidhā tutlā ʿalayhim ʾāyātunā bayyinātin taʿrifu fī wujūhi lladhīna kafarū l-munkara yakādūna yasṭūna bi-lladhīna yatlūna ʿalayhim ʾāyātinā qul ʾa-fa-ʾunabbiʾukum bi-sharrin min dhālikumu n-nāru waʿadahā llāhu lladhīna kafarū wa-biʾsa l-maṣīru
When Our manifest signs are recited to them, you perceive denial on the faces of the faithless: they would almost pounce upon those who recite Our signs to them. Say, ‘Shall I inform you about something worse than that? The Fire which Allah has promised the faithless. And it is an evil destination.’
73
yā-ʾayyuhā n-nāsu ḍuriba mathalun fa-stamiʿū lahū ʾinna lladhīna tadʿūna min dūni llāhi lan yakhluqū dhubāban wa-lawi jtamaʿū lahū wa-ʾin yaslubhumu dh-dhubābu shayʾan lā yastanqidhūhu minhu ḍaʿufa ṭ-ṭālibu wa-l-maṭlūbu
O mankind! Listen to a parable that is being drawn: Indeed those whom you invoke besides Allah will never create [even] a fly even if they all rallied to do so! And if a fly should take away something from them, they can not recover that from it. Feeble is the seeker and the sought!
74
mā qadarū llāha ḥaqqa qadrihī ʾinna llāha la-qawiyyun ʿazīzun-i
They do not regard Allah with the regard due to Him. Indeed Allah is all-strong, all-mighty.
75
allāhu yaṣṭafī mina l-malāʾikati rusulan wa-mina n-nāsi ʾinna llāha samīʿun baṣīrun
Allah chooses messengers from angels and from mankind. Indeed Allah is all-hearing, all-seeing.
76
yaʿlamu mā bayna ʾaydīhim wa-mā khalfahum wa-ʾilā llāhi turjaʿu l-ʾumūru
He knows that which is before them and that which is behind them, and to Allah all matters are returned.
77
yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū rkaʿū wa-sjudū wa-ʿbudū rabbakum wa-fʿalū l-khayra laʿallakkum tufliḥūna
O you who have faith! Bow down and prostrate yourselves, and worship your Lord, and do good, so that you may be felicitous.
78
wa-jāhidū fī llāhi ḥaqqa jihādihī huwa jtabākum wa-mā jaʿala ʿalaykum fī d-dīni min ḥarajin millata ʾabīkum ʾibrāhīma huwa sammākumu l-muslimīna min qablu wa-fī hādhā li-yakūna r-rasūlu shahīdan ʿalaykum wa-takūnū shuhadāʾa ʿalā n-nāsi fa-ʾaqīmū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ʾātū z-zakāta wa-ʿtaṣimū bi-llāhi huwa mawlākum fa-niʿma l-mawlā wa-niʿma n-naṣīru
And wage jihād for the sake of Allah, a jihād which is worthy of Him. He has chosen you and has not placed for you any obstacle in the religion, the faith of your father, Abraham. He named you ‘muslims’ before, and in this,1 so that the Apostle may be a witness to you, and that you may be witnesses to mankind. So maintain the prayer, give the zakāt, and hold fast to Allah. He is your master —an excellent master and an excellent helper. That is, in the earlier scriptures and in the present one, that is, the Qurʾān.
