The surah that opens with the discrete Arabic letters Ṭā Hā. Like “Yā Sīn” (surah 36), “Ṭā Hā” is said to be one of the names of the Prophet Muḥammad. The surah both begins and ends with mention of the Quran: it was not sent to the Prophet to cause him grief but is a clear proof from his Lord. The example of Moses is given as a lengthy account in order to encourage the Prophet and show the end of the disbelievers. The destruction of earlier generations is cited as a lesson from which the disbelievers should learn. The Prophet is ordered to be patient and to persevere with his worship. The surah is also known as: Ta-Ha, Taa Haa.

When your sister walked up [to Pharaoh’s palace] saying, “Shall I show you someone who will take care of him?” Then We restored you to your mother, that she might be comforted and not grieve. Then you slew a soul, whereupon We delivered you from anguish, and We tried you with various ordeals. Then you stayed for several years among the people of Midian. Then you turned up as ordained, O Moses!

kulū wa-rʿaw ʾanʿāmakum ʾinna fī dhālika la-ʾāyātin li-ʾulī n-nuhā
‘Eat and pasture your cattle.’ There are indeed signs in that for those who have sense.

qāla ʾa-jiʾtanā li-tukhrijanā min ʾarḍinā bi-siḥrika yā-mūsā
He said, ‘Have you come to us, Moses, to expel us from our land with your magic?
58

qāla lahum mūsā waylakum lā taftarū ʿalā llāhi kadhiban fa-yusḥitakum bi-ʿadhābin wa-qad khāba mani ftarā
Moses said to them, ‘Woe to you! Do not fabricate a lie against Allah, lest He should annihilate you with a punishment. Whoever fabricates lies certainly fails.’
62
fa-tanāzaʿū ʾamrahum baynahum wa-ʾasarrū n-najwā
So they disputed their matter among themselves, and kept their confidential talks secret.
63

fa-ʾajmiʿū kaydakum thumma ʾtū ṣaffan wa-qad ʾaflaḥa l-yawma mani staʿlā
So summon up your ingenuity, then come in ranks. Today he who has the upper hand will be saved!’
65
qālū yā-mūsā ʾimmā ʾan tulqiya wa-ʾimmā ʾan nakūna ʾawwala man ʾalqā

68
qulnā lā takhaf ʾinnaka ʾanta l-ʾaʿlā
We said, ‘Do not be afraid. Indeed you will have the upper hand.
69
wa-ʾalqi mā fī yamīnika talqaf mā ṣanaʿū ʾinnamā ṣanaʿū kaydu sāḥirin wa-lā yufliḥu s-sāḥiru ḥaythu ʾatā
Throw down what is in your right hand, and it will swallow what they have conjured. What they have conjured is only a magician’s trick, and the magician does not fare well wherever he may show up.’
70

He said, ‘Do you profess faith in Him before I may permit you? He is indeed your chief who has taught you magic! Surely I will cut off your hands and feet from opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees. So you will know which of us can inflict a punishment severer and more lasting.’
72

They said, ‘We will never prefer you to the manifest proofs which have come to us and [to] Him who originated us. Decide whatever you may. You can only decide about the life of this world.
73

We have indeed believed in our Lord that He may forgive us our iniquities and the magic you compelled us to perform. Allah is better and more lasting.’
74
ʾinnahū man yaʾti rabbahū mujriman fa-ʾinna lahū jahannama lā yamūtu fīhā wa-lā yaḥyā
Whoever comes to his Lord laden with guilt, indeed for him shall be hell where he will neither live nor die.
75

jannātu ʿadnin tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru khālidīna fīhā wa-dhālika jazāʾu man tazakkā
—the Gardens of Eden, with streams running in them, to abide in them [forever], and that is the reward of him who keeps pure.
77
wa-la-qad ʾawḥaynā ʾilā mūsā ʾan ʾasri bi-ʿibādī fa-ḍrib lahum ṭarīqan fī l-baḥri yabasan lā takhāfu darakan wa-lā takhshā
Certainly We revealed to Moses, [saying], ‘Take My servants on a journey by night. Then strike out for them a dry path through the sea. Do not be afraid of being overtaken, and have no fear [of getting drowned].
78
fa-ʾatbaʿahum firʿawnu bi-junūdihī fa-ghashiyahum mina l-yammi mā ghashiyahum
Then Pharaoh pursued them with his troops, whereat they were engulfed by what engulfed them of the sea.
79
wa-ʾaḍalla firʿawnu qawmahū wa-mā hadā
Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide them.
80
yā-banī ʾisrāʾīla qad ʾanjaynākum min ʿaduwwikum wa-wāʿadnākum jāniba ṭ-ṭūri l-ʾaymana wa-nazzalnā ʿalaykumu l-manna wa-s-salwā
O Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and We appointed with you a tryst on the right side of the Mount and We sent down to you manna and quails:
81
kulū min ṭayyibāti mā razaqnākum wa-lā taṭghaw fīhi fa-yaḥilla ʿalaykum ghaḍabī wa-man yaḥlil ʿalayhi ghaḍabī fa-qad hawā
‘Eat of the good things We have provided you, but do not overstep the bounds therein, lest My wrath should descend on you. And he on whom My wrath descends certainly perishes.1Or ‘falls’ (that is, into hell).
82
wa-ʾinnī la-ghaffārun li-man tāba wa-ʾāmana wa-ʿamila ṣāliḥan thumma htadā
Indeed I am all-forgiver toward him who repents, becomes faithful and acts righteously, and then follows guidance.’
83
wa-mā ʾaʿjalaka ʿan qawmika yā-mūsā
‘What has hurried you from your people, O Moses?’
84
qāla hum ʾulāʾi ʿalā ʾatharī wa-ʿajiltu ʾilāyka rabbi li-tarḍā
He said, ‘They are close upon my heels, and I hurried on to You, my Lord, that You may be pleased.’
85
qāla fa-ʾinnā qad fatannā qawmaka min baʿdika wa-ʾaḍallahumu s-sāmiriyyu
He said, ‘Indeed We tried your people in your absence, and the Sāmirī1 has led them astray.’Apparently one of the Israelites accompanying Moses (ʿa).
86
fa-rajaʿa mūsā ʾilā qawmihī ghaḍbāna ʾasifan qāla yā-qawmi ʾa-lam yaʿidkum rabbukum waʿdan ḥasanan ʾa-fa-ṭāla ʿalaykumu l-ʿahdu ʾam ʾaradtum ʾan yaḥilla ʿalaykum ghaḍabun min rabbikum fa-ʾakhlaftum mawʿidī
Thereupon Moses returned to his people, indignant and grieved. He said, ‘O my people! Did not your Lord give you a true promise? Did the period [of my absence]seem too long to you? Or did you desire that your Lord’s wrath should descend on you and so you failed your tryst with me?’
87
qālū mā ʾakhlafnā mawʿidaka bi-malkinā wa-lākinnā ḥummilnā ʾawzāran min zīnati l-qawmi fa-qadhafnāhā fa-ka-dhālika ʾalqā s-sāmiriyyu
They said, ‘We did not fail our tryst with you of our own accord, but we were laden with the weight of the people’s ornaments, and we cast them [into the fire] and so did the Sāmirī throw.’
88
fa-ʾakhraja lahum ʿijlan jasadan lahū khuwārun fa-qālū hādhā ʾilāhukum wa-ʾilāhu mūsā fa-nasiya
Then he produced for them a calf —a [lifeless] body with a low— and they said, This is your god and the god of Moses, so he1 forgot! The pronoun may be taken to refer either to the Sāmirī, concerning whom Allah says that he forgot Moses’ teaching about the worship of the true God, or to Moses, who is said by the Sāmirī to have forgotten and left behind his god—the Golden Calf—and gone out in search of him.
89
ʾa-fa-lā yarawna ʾallā yarjiʿu ʾilayhim qawlan wa-lā yamliku lahum ḍarran wa-lā nafʿan
Did they not see that it did not answer them, nor could it bring them any benefit or harm?
90
wa-la-qad qāla lahum hārūnu min qablu yā-qawmi ʾinnamā futintum bihī wa-ʾinna rabbakumu r-raḥmānu fa-ttabiʿūnī wa-ʾaṭīʿū ʾamrī
Aaron had certainly told them earlier, ‘O my people! You are only being tested by it. Indeed your Lord is the All-beneficent. So follow me and obey my command!’
91
qālū lan nabraḥa ʿalayhi ʿākifīna ḥattā yarjiʿa ʾilaynā mūsā
They had said, ‘We will keep on clinging to it until Moses returns to us.’
92
qāla yā-hārūnu mā manaʿaka ʾidh raʾaytahum ḍallū
He said, ‘O Aaron! What kept you, when you saw them going astray,
93
ʾallā tattabiʿani ʾa-fa-ʿaṣayta ʾamrī
from following me? Did you disobey my command?’
94
qāla ya-bna-ʾumma lā taʾkhudh bi-liḥyatī wa-lā bi-raʾsī ʾinnī khashītu ʾan taqūla farraqta bayna banī ʾisrāʾīla wa-lam tarqub qawlī
He said, ‘O son of my mother! Do not hold my beard or my head! I feared lest you should say, “You have caused a rift among the Children of Israel, and did not heed my word [of advice].” ’
95
qāla fa-mā khaṭbuka yā-sāmiriyyu
He said, ‘What is your business, O Sāmirī?’
96
qāla baṣurtu bi-mā lam yabṣurū bihī fa-qabaḍtu qabḍatan min ʾathari r-rasūli fa-nabadhtuhā wa-ka-dhālika sawwalat lī nafsī
He said, ‘I saw what they did not see. I took a handful [of dust] from the messenger’s trail and threw it. That is how my soul prompted me.’
97
qāla fa-dhhab fa-ʾinna laka fī l-ḥayāti ʾan taqūla lā misāsa wa-ʾinna laka mawʿidan lan tukhlafahū wa-nẓur ʾilā ʾilāhika lladhī ẓalta ʿalayhi ʿākifan la-nuḥarriqannahū thumma la-nansifannahū fī l-yammi nasfan
He said, ‘Begone! It shall be your [lot] throughout life to say, “Do not touch me!” Indeed there is a tryst for you which you will not fail to keep! Now look at your god to whom you went on clinging. We will burn it down and then scatter it[s ashes] into the sea.
98
ʾinnamā ʾilāhukumu llāhu lladhī lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa wasiʿa kulla shayʾin ʿilman
Indeed your God is Allah. There is no god except Him. He embraces all things in [His] knowledge.’
99
ka-dhālika naquṣṣu ʿalayka min ʾanbāʾi mā qad sabaqa wa-qad ʾātaynāka min ladunnā dhikran
Thus do We relate to you some accounts of what is past. Certainly We have given you a Reminder from Ourselves.
100
man ʾaʿraḍa ʿanhu fa-ʾinnahū yaḥmilu yawma l-qiyāmati wizran
Whoever disregards it shall bear its onus on the Day of Resurrection,
101
khālidīna fīhi wa-sāʾa lahum yawma l-qiyāmati ḥimlan
remaining in it [forever]. Evil is their burden on the Day of Resurrection
102
yawma yunfakhu fī ṣ-ṣūri wa-naḥshuru l-mujrimīna yawmaʾidhin zurqan
—the day the Trumpet will be blown— on that day We shall muster the guilty with blind eyes.1Literally, ‘with blued eyes.’ Cf. 17:72, 97; 20:124-125.
103
yatakhāfatūna baynahum ʾin labithtum ʾillā ʿashran
They will whisper to one another: ‘You have stayed only for ten [days].’
104
naḥnu ʾaʿlamu bi-mā yaqūlūna ʾidh yaqūlu ʾamthaluhum ṭarīqatan ʾin labithtum ʾillā yawman
We know best what they will say, when the best of them in conduct will say, ‘You stayed only a day!’
105
wa-yasʾalūnaka ʿani l-jibāli fa-qul yansifuhā rabbī nasfan
They question you concerning the mountains. Say, ‘My Lord will scatter them [like dust].’
106
fa-yadharuhā qāʿan ṣafṣafan
Then He will leave it1 a level plain. That is, the earth.
107
lā tarā fīhā ʿiwajan wa-lā ʾamtan
You will not see any crookedness or unevenness in it.
108
yawmaʾidhin yattabiʿūna d-dāʿiya lā ʿiwaja lahū wa-khashaʿati l-ʾaṣwātu li-r-raḥmāni fa-lā tasmaʿu ʾillā hamsan
On that day they will follow a summoner in whom there will be no deviousness. The voices will be muted before the All-beneficent, and you will hear nothing but a murmur.
109
yawmaʾidhin lā tanfaʿu sh-shafāʿatu ʾillā man ʾadhina lahu r-raḥmānu wa-raḍiya lahū qawlan
Intercession will not avail that day except from him whom the All-beneficent allows and approves of his word.
110
yaʿlamu mā bayna ʾaydīhim wa-mā khalfahum wa-lā yuḥīṭūna bihī ʿilman
He knows that which is before them and that which is behind them, but they cannot comprehend Him in their knowledge.
111
wa-ʿanati l-wujūhu li-l-ḥayyi l-qayyūmi wa-qad khāba man ḥamala ẓulman
All faces shall be humbled before the Living One, the All-sustainer, and he will fail who bears [the onus of] wrongdoing.
112
wa-man yaʿmal mina ṣ-ṣāliḥāti wa-huwa muʾminun fa-lā yakhāfu ẓulman wa-lā haḍman
But whoever does righteous deeds, should he be faithful, shall neither fear any wrong nor detraction.
113
wa-ka-dhālika ʾanzalnāhu qurʾānan ʿarabiyyan wa-ṣarrafnā fīhi mina l-waʿīdi laʿallahum yattaqūna ʾaw yuḥdithu lahum dhikran
Thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Qurʾān and We have paraphrased the threats in it so that they may be Godwary or it may evoke remembrance for them.
114
fa-taʿālā llāhu l-maliku l-ḥaqqu wa-lā taʿjal bi-l-qurʾāni min qabli ʾan yuqḍā ʾilayka waḥyuhū wa-qul rabbi zidnī ʿilman
So exalted is Allah, the True Sovereign. Do not hasten with the Qurʾān before its revelation is completed for you, and say, ‘My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.’
115
wa-la-qad ʿahidnā ʾilā ʾādama min qablu fa-nasiya wa-lam najid lahū ʿazman
Certainly We had enjoined Adam earlier; but he forgot, and We did not find any resoluteness in him.
116
wa-ʾidh qulnā li-l-malāʾikati sjudū li-ʾādama fa-sajadū ʾillā ʾiblīsa ʾabā
When We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate before Adam,’ they prostrated, but not Iblis: he refused.
117
fa-qulnā yā-ʾādamu ʾinna hādhā ʿaduwwun laka wa-li-zawjika fa-lā yukhrijannakumā mina l-jannati fa-tashqā
We said, ‘O Adam! This is indeed an enemy of yours and your mate’s. So do not let him expel you from paradise, or you will be miserable.
118
ʾinna laka ʾallā tajūʿa fīhā wa-lā taʿrā
Indeed you will neither be hungry in it nor naked.
119
wa-ʾannaka lā taẓmaʿu fīhā wa-lā taḍḥā
Indeed you will neither be thirsty in it, nor suffer from the sun.’
120
fa-waswasa ʾilayhi sh-shayṭānu qāla yā-ʾādamu hal ʾadulluka ʿalā shajarati l-khuldi wa-mulkin lā yablā
Then Satan tempted him. He said, ‘O Adam! Shall I show you the tree of immortality, and an imperishable kingdom?’
121
fa-ʾakalā minhā fa-badat lahumā sawʾātuhumā wa-ṭafiqā yakhṣifāni ʿalayhimā min waraqi l-jannati wa-ʿaṣā ʾādamu rabbahū fa-ghawā
So they both ate of it, and their nakedness became evident to them, and they began to stitch over themselves with the leaves of paradise. Adam disobeyed his Lord, and went amiss.
122
thumma jtabāhu rabbuhū fa-tāba ʿalayhi wa-hadā
Then his Lord chose him, and turned to him clemently, and guided him.
123
qāla hbiṭā minhā jamīʿan baʿḍukum li-baʿḍin ʿaduwwun fa-ʾimmā yaʾtiyannakum minnī hudan fa-mani ttabaʿa hudāya fa-lā yaḍillu wa-lā yashqā
He said, ‘Get down both of you1 from it, all together, being enemies of one another! Yet, should any guidance come to you from Me, those who follow My guidance will not go astray, nor will they be miserable. That is, Adam and Eve, or Adam and Iblīs.
124
wa-man ʾaʿraḍa ʿan dhikrī fa-ʾinna lahū maʿīshatan ḍankan wa-naḥshuruhū yawma l-qiyāmati ʾaʿmā
But whoever disregards My remembrance, his shall be a wretched life, and on the Day of Resurrection We shall raise him blind.’
125
qāla rabbi li-ma ḥashartanī ʾaʿmā wa-qad kuntu baṣīran
He will say, ‘My Lord! Why have You raised me blind, though I used to see?’
126
qāla ka-dhālika ʾatatka ʾāyātunā fa-nasītahā wa-ka-dhālika l-yawma tunsā
He will say: ‘So it is. Our signs came to you, but you forgot them, and thus you will be forgotten today.’
127
wa-ka-dhālika najzī man ʾasrafa wa-lam yuʾmin bi-ʾāyāti rabbihī wa-la-ʿadhābu l-ʾākhirati ʾashaddu wa-ʾabqā
Thus do We requite him who is a profligate and does not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is severer and more lasting.
128
ʾa-fa-lam yahdi lahum kam ʾahlaknā qablahum mina l-qurūni yamshūna fī masākinihim ʾinna fī dhālika la-ʾāyātin li-ʾulī n-nuhā
Does it not dawn upon them how many generations We have destroyed before them, amid [the ruins of] whose dwellings they walk? There are indeed signs in this for those who have reason.
129
wa-law-lā kalimatun sabaqat min rabbika la-kāna lizāman wa-ʾajalun musamman
And were it not for a prior decree of your Lord and a specified time, it was inevitable.
130
fa-ṣbir ʿalā mā yaqūlūna wa-sabbiḥ bi-ḥamdi rabbika qabla ṭulūʿi sh-shamsi wa-qabla ghurūbihā wa-min ʾānāʾi l-layli fa-sabbiḥ wa-ʾaṭrāfa n-nahāri laʿallaka tarḍā
So be patient with what they say, and celebrate the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before the sunset, and glorify Him in watches of the night and at the day’s ends, that you may be pleased.
131
wa-lā tamuddanna ʿaynayka ʾilā mā mattaʿnā bihī ʾazwājan minhum zahrata l-ḥayāti d-dunyā li-naftinahum fīhi wa-rizqu rabbika khayrun wa-ʾabqā
Do not extend your glance toward what We have provided certain groups of them as a glitter of the life of this world, so that We may test them thereby. And the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting.
132
wa-ʾmur ʾahlaka bi-ṣ-ṣalāti wa-ṣṭabir ʿalayhā lā nasʾaluka rizqan naḥnu narzuquka wa-l-ʿāqibatu li-t-taqwā
And bid your family to prayer and be steadfast in its maintenance. We do not ask any provision of you. It is We who provide for you, and the outcome will be in favour of Godwariness.
