The surah that mentions the miracle-filled story of Mary and how, though an untouched virgin, she gave birth to Jesus, the true Messiah and a human messenger of God to the Children of Israel. It takes its names from the story of Mary told in verse 16 . It recounts the grace given by God to a number of prophets and tells aspects of their stories. The claim that Jesus is the son of God is firmly denied, as is the assertion of the pagans of Mecca that the angels are God’s daughters. From verse 66 . the surah discusses the arrogant assertions of the disbelievers of Mecca. The Prophet is told that God’s punishment is coming to them and exhorted not to be impatient for it to arrive or to receive the revelation (verse 64).

wa-mā natanazzalu ʾillā bi-ʾamri rabbika lahū mā bayna ʾaydīnā wa-mā khalfanā wa-mā bayna dhālika wa-mā kāna rabbuka nasiyyan
‘We do not descend except by the command of your Lord. To Him belongs whatever is before us and whatever is behind us and whatever is in between that, and your Lord is not forgetful.
65
rabbu s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi wa-mā baynahumā fa-ʿbudhu wa-ṣṭabir li-ʿibādatihī hal taʿlamu lahū samiyyan
The Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. So worship Him and be steadfast in His worship. Do you know anyone who could be His namesake?’
66
wa-yaqūlu l-ʾinsānu ʾa-ʾidhā mā mittu la-sawfa ʾukhraju ḥayyan
Man says, ‘Shall I, when I have died, be brought forth alive?’
67
ʾa-wa-lā yadhkuru l-ʾinsānu ʾannā khalaqnāhu min qablu wa-lam yaku shayʾan
Does not man remember that We created him before when he was nothing?
68
fa-wa-rabbika la-naḥshurannahum wa-sh-shayāṭīna thumma la-nuḥḍirannahum ḥawla jahannama jithiyyan
By your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will surely bring them up around hell [scrambling] on their knees.1Or ‘in groups.’
69
thumma la-nanziʿanna min kulli shīʿatin ʾayyuhum ʾashaddu ʿalā r-raḥmāni ʿitiyyan
Then from every group We shall draw whichever of them was more defiant to the All-beneficent.
70
thumma la-naḥnu ʾaʿlamu bi-lladhīna hum ʾawlā bihā ṣiliyyan
Then surely We will know best those who deserve most to enter it.
71
wa-ʾin minkum ʾillā wāriduhā kāna ʿalā rabbika ḥatman maqḍiyyan
There is none of you but will come to it:1 a [matter that is a] decided certainty with your Lord. That is, they will approach it, without entering it.
72
thumma nunajjī lladhīna ttaqaw wa-nadharu ẓ-ẓālimīna fīhā jithiyyan
Then We will deliver those who are Godwary, and leave the wrongdoers in it, fallen on their knees.
73
wa-ʾidhā tutlā ʿalayhim ʾāyātunā bayyinātin qāla lladhīna kafarū li-lladhīna ʾāmanū ʾayyu l-farīqayni khayrun maqāman wa-ʾaḥsanu nadiyyan
When Our manifest signs are recited to them, the faithless say to the faithful, ‘Which of the two sides is superior in station1 and better with respect to company?’2Or ‘superior with respect to dwelling.’Or ‘better with respect to gatherings.’
74
wa-kam ʾahlaknā qablahum min qarnin hum ʾaḥsanu ʾathāthan wa-riʾyan
How many a generation We have destroyed before them, who were superior in furnishings and appearance!
75
qul man kāna fī ḍ-ḍalālati fa-l-yamdud lahu r-raḥmānu maddan ḥattā ʾidhā raʾaw mā yūʿadūna ʾimmā l-ʿadhāba wa-ʾimmā s-sāʿata fa-sa-yaʿlamūna man huwa sharrun makānan wa-ʾaḍʿafu jundan
Say, ‘Whoever abides in error, the All-beneficent shall prolong his respite until they sight what they have been promised: either punishment, or the Hour.’ Then they will know whose position is worse, and whose host is weaker.
76
wa-yazīdu llāhu lladhīna htadaw hudan wa-l-bāqiyātu ṣ-ṣāliḥātu khayrun ʿinda rabbika thawāban wa-khayrun maraddan
Allah enhances in guidance those who are [rightly] guided, and lasting righteous deeds are better with your Lord in reward, and better at the return [to Allah].
77
ʾa-fa-raʾayta lladhī kafara bi-ʾāyātinā wa-qāla la-ʾūtayanna mālan wa-waladan
Have you not regarded him who defies Our signs, and says, ‘I will surely be given wealth and children’?
78
ʾa-ṭṭalaʿa l-ghayba ʾami ttakhadha ʿinda r-raḥmāni ʿahdan
Has he come to know the Unseen, or taken a promise from the All-beneficent?
79
kallā sa-naktubu mā yaqūlu wa-namuddu lahū mina l-ʿadhābi maddan
No indeed! We will write down what he says, and We will prolong his punishment endlessly.
80
wa-narithuhū mā yaqūlu wa-yaʾtīnā fardan
We shall take over from him what he talks about,1 and he will come to Us alone. That is, ‘He will depart unaccompanied from the world, leaving in Our possession the wealth and children that he talks about.’
81
wa-ttakhadhū min dūni llāhi ʾālihatan li-yakūnū lahum ʿizzan
They have taken gods besides Allah that they may be a [source of] might to them:
82
kallā sa-yakfurūna bi-ʿibādatihim wa-yakūnūna ʿalayhim ḍiddan
No Indeed! Soon they will disown their worship, and they will be their opponents.
83
ʾa-lam tara ʾannā ʾarsalnā sh-shayāṭīna ʿalā l-kāfirīna taʾuzzuhum ʾazzan
Have you not regarded that We unleash the devils upon the faithless to urge them impetuously?
84
fa-lā taʿjal ʿalayhim ʾinnamā naʿuddu lahum ʿaddan
So do not make haste against them; indeed We are counting1 for them, a counting [down].That is, the number of their breaths.
85
yawma naḥshuru l-muttaqīna ʾilā r-raḥmāni wafdan
The day We shall gather the Godwary toward the All-beneficent, on mounts,1Or ‘as incoming guests.
86
wa-nasūqu l-mujrimīna ʾilā jahannama wirdan
and drive the guilty as a thirsty herd towards hell.
87
lā yamlikūna sh-shafāʿata ʾillā mani ttakhadha ʿinda r-raḥmāni ʿahdan
No one will have the power to intercede [with Allah], except for him who has taken a covenant with the All-beneficent.
88
wa-qālū ttakhadha r-raḥmānu waladan
They say, ‘The All-beneficent has taken a son!’
89
la-qad jiʾtum shayʾan ʾiddan
You have certainly advanced something hideous!
90
takādu s-samāwātu yatafaṭṭarna minhu wa-tanshaqqu l-ʾarḍu wa-takhirru l-jibālu haddan
The heavens are about to be rent apart at it, the earth to split open, and the mountains to collapse into bits,
91
ʾan daʿaw li-r-raḥmāni waladan
that they should ascribe a son to the All-beneficent!
92
wa-mā yanbaghī li-r-raḥmāni ʾan yattakhidha waladan
It does not behoove the All-beneficent to take a son.
93
ʾin kullu man fī s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi ʾillā ʾātī r-raḥmāni ʿabdan
There is none in the heavens and the earth but he comes to the All-beneficent as a servant.
94
la-qad ʾaḥṣāhum wa-ʿaddahum ʿaddan
Certainly He has counted them [all] and numbered them precisely,
95
wa-kulluhum ʾātīhi yawma l-qiyāmati fardan
and each of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection.
96
ʾinna lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti sa-yajʿalu lahumu r-raḥmānu wuddan
Indeed those who have faith and do righteous deeds —the All-beneficent will endear them [to His creation].
97
fa-ʾinnamā yassarnāhu bi-lisānika li-tubashshira bihi l-muttaqīna wa-tundhira bihī qawman luddan
Indeed We have made it simple in your language so that you may give good news thereby to the Godwary and warn with it a disputatious lot.
98
wa-kam ʾahlaknā qablahum min qarnin hal tuḥissu minhum min ʾaḥadin ʾaw tasmaʿu lahum rikzan
How many a generation We have destroyed before them! Can you descry any one of them, or hear from them so much as a murmur?
