Surah 17
AL-ISRĀʾ
THE NIGHT JOURNEY
meccan 111 Verses
The surah that mentions the miracle of The Night Journey, wherein God transported His servant Muḥammad in a single night from the Sacred Mosque of Mecca to al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, to show him some of His most wondrous signs. God caused Muhammad, in the space of a single night, to journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and from there to heaven and back again. It takes its name from this subject, as relating to the celestial journey (miʿrāj) of the Prophet, mentioned in verse 1 and again in verse 60. The surah is framed by references to the Children of Israel at the beginning, and to Pharaoh at the end. The bulk of the surah deals with the Quran as guidance and warning, Muḥammad, and the nature of prophecy, especially the fact that he is a human being and incapable himself of producing miracles. It also warns of Iblis’s promise to tempt mankind and of the fate of the disbelievers, and it gives a series of commandments (verse 22 .).The surah is also known as: Glory, The Children of Israel.
1

subḥāna lladhī ʾasrā bi-ʿabdihī laylan mina l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi ʾilā l-masjidi l-ʾaqṣā lladhī bāraknā ḥawlahū li-nuriyahū min ʾāyātinā ʾinnahū huwa s-samīʿu l-baṣīru

Immaculate is He who carried His servant on a journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose environs We have blessed, that We might show him some of Our signs. Indeed He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing.
2

wa-ʾātaynā mūsā l-kitāba wa-jaʿalnāhu hudan li-banī ʾisrāʾīla ʾallā tattakhidhū min dūnī wakīlan

We gave Moses the Book, and made it a guide for the Children of Israel —[saying,] ‘Do not take any trustee besides Me’—
3

dhurriyyata man ḥamalnā maʿa nūḥin ʾinnahū kāna ʿabdan shakūran

descendants of those whom We carried [in the ark] with Noah. Indeed he was a grateful servant.
4

wa-qaḍaynā ʾilā banī ʾisrāʾīla fī l-kitābi la-tufsidunna fī l-ʾarḍi marratayni wa-la-taʿlunna ʿuluwwan kabīran

We revealed to the Children of Israel in the Book: ‘Twice you will cause corruption on the earth, and you will perpetrate great tyranny.’
5

fa-ʾidhā jāʾa waʿdu ʾūlāhumā baʿathnā ʿalaykum ʿibādan lanā ʾulī baʾsin shadīdin fa-jāsū khilāla d-diyāri wa-kāna waʿdan mafʿūlan

So when the first occasion of the two [prophecies] came, We aroused against you Our servants possessing great might, and they ransacked [your] habitations, and the promise was bound to be fulfilled.
6

thumma radadnā lakumu l-karrata ʿalayhim wa-ʾamdadnākum bi-ʾamwālin wa-banīna wa-jaʿalnākum ʾakthara nafīran

Then We gave you back the turn [to prevail] over them, and We aided you with children and wealth, and made you greater in number,
7

ʾin ʾaḥsantum ʾaḥsantum li-ʾanfusikum wa-ʾin ʾasaʾtum fa-lahā fa-ʾidhā jāʾa waʿdu l-ʾākhirati li-yasūʾū wujūhakum wa-li-yadkhulū l-masjida ka-mā dakhalūhu ʾawwala marratin wa-li-yutabbirū mā ʿalaw tatbīran

[saying,] ‘If you do good, you will do good to your [own] souls, and if you do evil, it will be [evil] for them.’ So when the occasion for the other [prophecy] comes, they will make your faces1 wretched, and enter the Temple just as they entered it the first time, and utterly destroy whatever they come upon.Or ‘notables.’
8

ʿasā rabbukum ʾan yarḥamakum wa-ʾin ʿudtum ʿudnā wa-jaʿalnā jahannama li-l-kāfirīna ḥaṣīran

Maybe your Lord will have mercy on you, but if you revert, We [too] will revert, and We have made hell a prison for the faithless.
9

ʾinna hādhā l-qurʾāna yahdī li-llatī hiya ʾaqwamu wa-yubashshiru l-muʾminīna lladhīna yaʿmalūna ṣ-ṣāliḥāti ʾanna lahum ʾajran kabīran

Indeed this Qurʾān guides to what is most upright, and gives the good news to the faithful who do righteous deeds that there is a great reward for them.
10

wa-ʾanna lladhīna lā yuʾminūna bi-l-ʾākhirati ʾaʿtadnā lahum ʿadhāban ʾalīman

As for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have prepared a painful punishment for them.
11

wa-yadʿu l-ʾinsānu bi-sh-sharri duʿāʾahū bi-l-khayri wa-kāna l-ʾinsānu ʿajūlan

Man prays for ill as [avidly as] he prays for good, and man is overhasty.
12

wa-jaʿalnā l-layla wa-n-nahāra ʾāyatayni fa-maḥawnā ʾāyata l-layli wa-jaʿalnā ʾāyata n-nahāri mubṣiratan li-tabtaghū faḍlan min rabbikum wa-li-taʿlamū ʿadada s-sinīna wa-l-ḥisāba wa-kulla shayʾin faṣṣalnāhu tafṣīlan

We made the night and the day two signs. Then We effaced the sign of the night, and made the sign of the day lightsome that you may seek grace from your Lord and that you may know the number of years and the calculation [of time], and We have elaborated everything in detail.1Or ‘articulated everything distinctly.’
13

wa-kulla ʾinsānin ʾalzamnāhu ṭāʾirahū fī ʿunuqihī wa-nukhriju lahū yawma l-qiyāmati kitāban yalqāhu manshūran-i

We have attached every person’s omen to his neck, and We shall bring it out for him on the Day of Resurrection as a wide open book that he will encounter.
14

iqraʾ kitābaka kafā bi-nafsika l-yawma ʿalayka ḥasīban

‘Read your book! Today your soul suffices as your own reckoner.’1Or ‘today you suffice as your own reckoner.’
15

mani htadā fa-ʾinnamā yahtadī li-nafsihī wa-man ḍalla fa-ʾinnamā yaḍillu ʿalayhā wa-lā taziru wāziratun wizra ʾukhrā wa-mā kunnā muʿadhdhibīna ḥattā nabʿatha rasūlan

Whoever is guided is guided only for [the good of] his own soul, and whoever goes astray, goes astray only to its detriment. No bearer shall bear another’s burden. We do not punish [any community] until We have sent [it] an apostle.
16

wa-ʾidhā ʾaradnā ʾan nuhlika qaryatan ʾamarnā mutrafīhā fa-fasaqū fīhā fa-ḥaqqa ʿalayhā l-qawlu fa-dammarnāhā tadmīran

And when We desire to destroy a town We command its affluent ones [to obey Allah]. But they commit transgression in it, and so the word becomes due against it, and We destroy it utterly.
17

wa-kam ʾahlaknā mina l-qurūni min baʿdi nūḥin wa-kafā bi-rabbika bi-dhunūbi ʿibādihī khabīran baṣīran

How many generations We have destroyed since Noah! Your Lord suffices as one well aware and percipient of His servants’ sins.
18

man kāna yurīdu l-ʿājilata ʿajjalnā lahū fīhā mā nashāʾu li-man nurīdu thumma jaʿalnā lahū jahannama yaṣlāhā madhmūman madḥūran

Whoever desires this transitory life, We expedite for him therein whatever We wish, for whomever We desire. Then We appoint hell for him, to enter it, blameful and spurned.
19

wa-man ʾarāda l-ʾākhirata wa-saʿā lahā saʿyahā wa-huwa muʾminun fa-ʾulāʾika kāna saʿyuhum mashkūran

Whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it with an endeavour worthy of it, should he be faithful —the endeavour of such will be well-appreciated.
20

kullan numiddu hāʾulāʾi wa-hāʾulāʾi min ʿaṭāʾi rabbika wa-mā kāna ʿaṭāʾu rabbika maḥẓūran-i

To these and to those—to all We extend the bounty of your Lord, and the bounty of your Lord is not confined.
21

unẓur kayfa faḍḍalnā baʿḍahum ʿalā baʿḍin wa-la-l-ʾākhiratu ʾakbaru darajātin wa-ʾakbaru tafḍīlan

Observe how We have given some of them an advantage over some others; yet the Hereafter is surely greater in respect of ranks and greater in respect of relative merit.1Or ‘greater in respect of preferment.’
22

Do not set up another god besides Allah, or you will sit blameworthy, forsaken.
23

wa-qaḍā rabbuka ʾallā taʿbudū ʾillā ʾiyyāhu wa-bi-l-wālidayni ʾiḥsānan ʾimmā yablughanna ʿindaka l-kibara ʾaḥaduhumā ʾaw kilāhumā fa-lā taqul lahumā ʾuffin wa-lā tanharhumā wa-qul lahumā qawlan karīman

Your Lord has decreed that you shall not worship anyone except Him, and [He has enjoined] kindness to parents. Should they reach old age at your side —one of them or both— do not say to them, ‘Fie!’1 And do not chide them, but speak to them noble words. That is, do not grumble or speak to them in an ill-tempered manner. Uff is an interjection expressing displeasure and exasperation, indicating that one has been put out of patience.
24

wa-khfiḍ lahumā janāḥa dh-dhulli mina r-raḥmati wa-qul rabbi rḥamhumā ka-mā rabbayānī ṣaghīran

Lower the wing of humility to them, out of mercy, and say, ‘My Lord! Have mercy on them, just as they reared me when I was [a] small [child]!’
25

rabbukum ʾaʿlamu bi-mā fī nufūsikum ʾin takūnū ṣāliḥīna fa-ʾinnahū kāna li-l-ʾawwābīna ghafūran

Your Lord knows best what is in your hearts. Should you be righteous, He is indeed most forgiving toward penitents.
26

wa-ʾāti dhā l-qurbā ḥaqqahū wa-l-miskīna wa-bna s-sabīli wa-lā tubadhdhir tabdhīran

Give the relatives their [due] right, and the needy and the traveller [as well], but do not squander wastefully.
27

ʾinna l-mubadhdhirīna kānū ʾikhwāna sh-shayāṭīni wa-kāna sh-shayṭānu li-rabbihī kafūran

Indeed the wasteful are brothers of satans, and Satan is ungrateful to his Lord.
28

wa-ʾimmā tuʿriḍanna ʿanhumu btighāʾa raḥmatin min rabbika tarjūhā fa-qul lahum qawlan maysūran

And if you have to overlook them [for now], seeking the mercy of your Lord which you expect [in the future], speak to them gentle words.
29

wa-lā tajʿal yadaka maghlūlatan ʾilā ʿunuqika wa-lā tabsuṭhā kulla l-basṭi fa-taqʿuda malūman maḥsūran

Do not keep your hand chained to your neck, nor open it altogether,1 or you will sit blameworthy, regretful. That is, neither be miserly nor be a spendthrift.
30

ʾinna rabbaka yabsuṭu r-rizqa li-man yashāʾu wa-yaqdiru ʾinnahū kāna bi-ʿibādihī khabīran baṣīran

Indeed your Lord expands the provision for whomever He wishes, and tightens it. Indeed He is well aware and percipient of His servants.
31

wa-lā taqtulū ʾawlādakum khashyata ʾimlāqin naḥnu narzuquhum wa-ʾiyyākum ʾinna qatlahum kāna khiṭʾan kabīran

Do not kill your children for the fear of penury: We will provide for them and for you. Killing them is indeed a great iniquity.
32

wa-lā taqrabū z-zinā ʾinnahū kāna fāḥishatan wa-sāʾa sabīlan

Do not approach fornication. It is indeed an indecency and an evil way.
33

wa-lā taqtulū n-nafsa llatī ḥarrama llāhu ʾillā bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-man qutila maẓlūman fa-qad jaʿalnā li-waliyyihī sulṭānan fa-lā yusrif fī l-qatli ʾinnahū kāna manṣūran

Do not kill a soul [whose life] Allah has made inviolable, except with due cause, and whoever is killed wrongfully, We have certainly given his heir an authority. But let him not commit any excess in killing,1 for he enjoys the support [of law].Such as mutilating the body of the murderer, or killing someone other than the guilty person for the sake of vengeance.
34

wa-lā taqrabū māla l-yatīmi ʾillā bi-llatī hiya ʾaḥsanu ḥattā yablugha ʾashuddahū wa-ʾawfū bi-l-ʿahdi ʾinna l-ʿahda kāna masʾūlan

Do not approach the orphan’s property except in the best manner until he comes of age. And fulfill the covenants; indeed all covenants are accountable.
35

wa-ʾawfū l-kayla ʾidhā kiltum wa-zinū bi-l-qisṭāsi l-mustaqīmi dhālika khayrun wa-ʾaḥsanu taʾwīlan

When you measure, observe fully the measure, [and] weigh with an even balance. That is better and fairer in outcome.
36

wa-lā taqfu mā laysa laka bihī ʿilmun ʾinna s-samʿa wa-l-baṣara wa-l-fuʾāda kullu ʾulāʾika kāna ʿanhu masʾūlan

Do not follow that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed the hearing, the eyesight, and the heart —all of these are accountable.
37

wa-lā tamshi fī l-ʾarḍi maraḥan ʾinnaka lan takhriqa l-ʾarḍa wa-lan tablugha l-jibāla ṭūlan

Do not walk exultantly on the earth. Indeed you will neither pierce the earth, nor reach the mountains in height.
38

kullu dhālika kāna sayyiʾuhū ʿinda rabbika makrūhan

The evil of all these is detestable to your Lord.
39

dhālika mimmā ʾawḥā ʾilayka rabbuka mina l-ḥikmati wa-lā tajʿal maʿa llāhi ʾilāhan ʾākhara fa-tulqā fī jahannama malūman madḥūran

These are among [precepts] that your Lord has revealed to you of wisdom. Do not set up another god besides Allah, or you will be cast into hell, blameworthy, banished.
40

ʾa-fa-ʾaṣfākum rabbukum bi-l-banīna wa-ttakhadha mina l-malāʾikati ʾināthan ʾinnakum la-taqūlūna qawlan ʿaẓīman

Did your Lord prefer you for sons, and [Himself] adopt females from among the angels?1 Indeed you say a monstrous word!Cf. 4:117; 37:150; 43:19; 53:21, 27.
41

wa-la-qad ṣarrafnā fī hādhā l-qurʾāni li-yadhdhakkarū wa-mā yazīduhum ʾillā nufūran

Certainly We have paraphrased [the principles of guidance] in this Qurʾān so that they may take admonition, but it increases them only in aversion.
42

qul law kāna maʿahū ʾālihatun ka-mā yaqūlūna ʾidhan la-btaghaw ʾilā dhī l-ʿarshi sabīlan

Say, ‘Were there [other] gods besides Him, as they say, they would surely encroach on the Lord of the Throne.
43

subḥānahū wa-taʿālā ʿammā yaqūlūna ʿuluwwan kabīran

Immaculate is He, and greatly exalted above what they say!’
44

tusabbiḥu lahu s-samāwātu s-sabʿu wa-l-ʾarḍu wa-man fīhinna wa-ʾin min shayʾin ʾillā yusabbiḥu bi-ḥamdihī wa-lākin lā tafqahūna tasbīḥahum ʾinnahū kāna ḥalīman ghafūran

The seven heavens glorify Him, and the earth [too], and whoever is in them. There is not a thing but celebrates His praise, but you do not understand their glorification. Indeed He is all-forbearing, all-forgiving.
45

wa-ʾidhā qaraʾta l-qurʾāna jaʿalnā baynaka wa-bayna lladhīna lā yuʾminūna bi-l-ʾākhirati ḥijāban mastūran

When you recite the Qurʾān, We draw between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a hidden curtain,
46

wa-jaʿalnā ʿalā qulūbihim ʾakinnatan ʾan yafqahūhu wa-fī ʾādhānihim waqran wa-ʾidhā dhakarta rabbaka fī l-qurʾāni waḥdahū wallaw ʿalā ʾadbārihim nufūran

and We cast veils on their hearts, lest they should understand it, and a deafness into their ears. When you mention your Lord alone in the Qurʾān, they turn their backs in aversion.

naḥnu ʾaʿlamu bi-mā yastamiʿūna bihī ʾidh yastamiʿūna ʾilayka wa-ʾidh hum najwā ʾidh yaqūlū ẓ-ẓālimūna ʾin tattabiʿūna ʾillā rajulan masḥūran-i

We know best what they listen for, when they listen to you, and when they hold secret talks, when the wrongdoers say, ‘[If you follow him] You will be following just a bewitched man.’
48

unẓur kayfa ḍarabū laka l-ʾamthāla fa-ḍallū fa-lā yastaṭīʿūna sabīlan

Look, how they coin epithets for you; so they go astray, and cannot find a way.
49

wa-qālū ʾa-ʾidhā kunnā ʿiẓāman wa-rufātan ʾa-ʾinnā la-mabʿūthūna khalqan jadīdan

They say, ‘What, when we have become bones and dust, shall we really be raised in a new creation?’
50

qul kūnū ḥijāratan ʾaw ḥadīdan

Say, ‘Should you be stones, or iron,
51

ʾaw khalqan mimmā yakburu fī ṣudūrikum fa-sa-yaqūlūna man yuʿīdunā quli lladhī faṭarakum ʾawwala marratin fa-sa-yunghiḍūna ʾilayka ruʾūsahum wa-yaqūlūna matā huwa qul ʿasā ʾan yakūna qarīban

or a creature more fantastic to your minds!’ They will say, ‘Who will bring us back?’ Say, ‘He who originated you the first time.’ They will nod their heads at you, and say, ‘When will that be?’ Say, ‘Maybe it is near!
52

yawma yadʿūkum fa-tastajībūna bi-ḥamdihī wa-taẓunnūna ʾin labithtum ʾillā qalīlan

The day He calls you, you will respond to Him, praising Him, and you will think you remained only a little.’
53

wa-qul li-ʿibādī yaqūlū llatī hiya ʾaḥsanu ʾinna sh-shayṭāna yanzaghu baynahum ʾinna sh-shayṭāna kāna li-l-ʾinsāni ʿaduwwan mubīnan

Tell My servants to speak in a manner which is the best. Indeed Satan incites ill feeling between them, and Satan is indeed man’s manifest enemy.
54

rabbukum ʾaʿlamu bikum ʾin yashaʾ yarḥamkum ʾaw ʾin yashaʾ yuʿadhdhibkum wa-mā ʾarsalnāka ʿalayhim wakīlan

Your Lord knows you best. He will have mercy on you, if He wishes, or punish you, if He wishes, and We did not send you to watch over them.
55

wa-rabbuka ʾaʿlamu bi-man fī s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi wa-la-qad faḍḍalnā baʿḍa n-nabiyyīna ʿalā baʿḍin wa-ʾātaynā dāwūda zabūran

Your Lord knows best whoever is in the heavens and the earth. Certainly We gave some prophets an advantage over others, and We gave David the Psalms.
56

quli dʿū lladhīna zaʿamtum min dūnihī fa-lā yamlikūna kashfa ḍ-ḍurri ʿankum wa-lā taḥwīlan

Say, ‘Invoke those whom you claim [to be gods] besides Him. They have no power to remove your distress nor to bring about any change [in your state].
57

ʾulāʾika lladhīna yadʿūna yabtaghūna ʾilā rabbihimu l-wasīlata ʾayyuhum ʾaqrabu wa-yarjūna raḥmatahū wa-yakhāfūna ʿadhābahū ʾinna ʿadhāba rabbika kāna maḥdhūran

They [themselves] are the ones who supplicate, seeking a recourse to their Lord,1 whoever is nearer [to Him], expecting His mercy and fearing His punishment.’ Indeed your Lord’s punishment is a thing to beware of.Or ‘Those whom they (i.e., the polytheists) invoke, themselves seek a recourse to their Lord… .’
58

wa-ʾin min qaryatin ʾillā naḥnu muhlikūhā qabla yawmi l-qiyāmati ʾaw muʿadhdhibūhā ʿadhāban shadīdan kāna dhālika fī l-kitābi masṭūran

There is not a town but We will destroy it before the Day of Resurrection, or punish it with a severe punishment. That has been written in the Book.
59

wa-mā manaʿanā ʾan nursila bi-l-ʾāyāti ʾillā ʾan kadhdhaba bihā l-ʾawwalūna wa-ʾātaynā thamūda n-nāqata mubṣiratan fa-ẓalamū bihā wa-mā nursilu bi-l-ʾāyāti ʾillā takhwīfan

Nothing keeps Us from sending signs except that the ancients denied them. We gave Thamūd the she-camel as an eye-opener, but they wronged her. We do not send the signs except for deterrence.
60

wa-ʾidh qulnā laka ʾinna rabbaka ʾaḥāṭa bi-n-nāsi wa-mā jaʿalnā r-ruʾyā llatī ʾaraynāka ʾillā fitnatan li-n-nāsi wa-sh-shajarata l-malʿūnata fī l-qurʾāni wa-nukhawwifuhum fa-mā yazīduhum ʾillā ṭughyānan kabīran

When We said to you, ‘Indeed your Lord comprehends all mankind,’ We did not appoint the vision that We showed you except as a test for the people and the tree cursed in the Qurʾān. We deter them, but it only increases them in great rebellion.
61

wa-ʾidh qulnā li-l-malāʾikati sjudū li-ʾādama fa-sajadū ʾillā ʾiblīsa qāla ʾa-ʾasjudu li-man khalaqta ṭīnan

When We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate before Adam,’ they [all] prostrated, but not Iblis: he said, ‘Shall I prostrate before someone whom You have created from clay?’
62

qāla ʾa-raʾaytaka hādhā lladhī karramta ʿalayya la-ʾin ʾakhkhartani ʾilā yawmi l-qiyāmati la-ʾaḥtanikanna dhurriyyatahū ʾillā qalīlan

Said he, ‘Do You see this one whom You have honoured above me? If You respite me until the Day of Resurrection, I will surely destroy his progeny, [all] except a few.’
63

qāla dhhab fa-man tabiʿaka minhum fa-ʾinna jahannama jazāʾukum jazāʾan mawfūran

Said He, ‘Begone! Whoever of them follows you, indeed the hell shall be your requital, an ample reward.
64

wa-stafziz mani staṭaʿta minhum bi-ṣawtika wa-ʾajlib ʿalayhim bi-khaylika wa-rajilika wa-shārikhum fī l-ʾamwāli wa-l-ʾawlādi wa-ʿidhum wa-mā yaʿiduhumu sh-shayṭānu ʾillā ghurūran

Instigate whomever of them you can with your voice;1 and rally against them your cavalry and your infantry, and share with them in wealth and children, and make promises to them!’ But Satan promises them nothing but delusion.Or ‘Tempt whomever … .’
65

ʾinna ʿibādī laysa laka ʿalayhim sulṭānun wa-kafā bi-rabbika wakīlan

‘As for My servants, you shall have no authority over them.’ And your Lord suffices as trustee.
66

rabbukumu lladhī yuzjī lakumu l-fulka fī l-baḥri li-tabtaghū min faḍlihī ʾinnahū kāna bikum raḥīman

Your Lord is He who drives for you the ships in the sea, that you may seek His grace. Indeed He is most merciful to you.
67

wa-ʾidhā massakumu ḍ-ḍurru fī l-baḥri ḍalla man tadʿūna ʾillā ʾiyyāhu fa-lammā najjākum ʾilā l-barri ʾaʿraḍtum wa-kāna l-ʾinsānu kafūran

And when distress befalls you at sea, those whom you invoke besides Him are forsaken. But when He delivers you to land, you are disregardful [of Him]. And man is very ungrateful.
68

ʾa-fa-ʾamintum ʾan yakhsifa bikum jāniba l-barri ʾaw yursila ʿalaykum ḥāṣiban thumma lā tajidū lakum wakīlan

Do you feel secure that He will not make the coastland swallow you, or He will not unleash upon you a rain of stones? Then you will not find any defender for yourselves.
69

ʾam ʾamintum ʾan yuʿīdakum fīhi tāratan ʾukhrā fa-yursila ʿalaykum qāṣifan mina r-rīḥi fa-yughriqakum bi-mā kafartum thumma lā tajidū lakum ʿalaynā bihī tabīʿan

Do you feel secure that He will not send you back into it another time and unleash against you a shattering gale and drown you because of your unfaith? Then you will not find for yourselves any redresser against Us.
70

wa-la-qad karramnā banī ʾādama wa-ḥamalnāhum fī l-barri wa-l-baḥri wa-razaqnāhum mina ṭ-ṭayyibāti wa-faḍḍalnāhum ʿalā kathīrin mimman khalaqnā tafḍīlan

Certainly We have honoured the Children of Adam, and carried them over land and sea, and provided them with all the good things, and given them an advantage over many of those We have created with a complete preference.
71

yawma nadʿū kulla ʾunāsin bi-ʾimāmihim fa-man ʾūtiya kitābahū bi-yamīnihī fa-ʾulāʾika yaqraʾūna kitābahum wa-lā yuẓlamūna fatīlan

The day We shall summon every group of people with their imam,1 then whoever is given his book in his right hand —they will read it, and they will not be wronged so much as a single date-thread.That is, leader.
72

wa-man kāna fī hādhihī ʾaʿmā fa-huwa fī l-ʾākhirati ʾaʿmā wa-ʾaḍallu sabīlan

But whoever has been blind in this [world], will be blind in the Hereafter, and [even] more astray from the [right] way.
73

wa-ʾin kādū la-yaftinūnaka ʿani lladhī ʾawḥaynā ʾilayka li-taftariya ʿalaynā ghayrahū wa-ʾidhan la-ttakhadhūka khalīlan

They were about to beguile you from what Allah has revealed to you so that you may fabricate against Us something other than that, whereat they would have befriended you.
74

wa-law-lā ʾan thabbatnāka la-qad kidta tarkanu ʾilayhim shayʾan qalīlan

Had We not fortified you, certainly you might have inclined toward them a bit.
75

ʾidhan la-ʾadhaqnāka ḍiʿfa l-ḥayāti wa-ḍiʿfa l-mamāti thumma lā tajidu laka ʿalaynā naṣīran

Then We would have surely made you taste a double [punishment] in this life and a double [punishment] after death, and then you would have not found for yourself any helper against Us.
76

wa-ʾin kādū la-yastafizzūnaka mina l-ʾarḍi li-yukhrijūka minhā wa-ʾidhan lā yalbathūna khilāfaka ʾillā qalīlan

They were about to hound you out of the land, to expel you from it, but then they would not have stayed after you but a little.
77

sunnata man qad ʾarsalnā qablaka min rusulinā wa-lā tajidu li-sunnatinā taḥwīlan

A precedent of those We have sent from among Our apostles before you, and you will not find any change in Our precedent.
78

ʾaqimi ṣ-ṣalāta li-dulūki sh-shamsi ʾilā ghasaqi l-layli wa-qurʾāna l-fajri ʾinna qurʾāna l-fajri kāna mashhūdan

Maintain the prayer from the sun’s decline1 till the darkness of the night, and [observe particularly] the dawn recital. Indeed the dawn recital is attended [by angels].That is, from noon onwards, when the sun crosses the meridian.
79

wa-mina l-layli fa-tahajjad bihī nāfilatan laka ʿasā ʾan yabʿathaka rabbuka maqāman maḥmūdan

And keep vigil for a part of the night, as a supererogatory [devotion] for you. It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praiseworthy station.
80

wa-qul rabbi ʾadkhilnī mudkhala ṣidqin wa-ʾakhrijnī mukhraja ṣidqin wa-jʿal lī min ladunka sulṭānan naṣīran

And say, ‘My Lord! ‘Admit me with a worthy entrance, and bring me out with a worthy departure, and render me a favourable authority from Yourself.’
81

wa-qul jāʾa l-ḥaqqu wa-zahaqa l-bāṭilu ʾinna l-bāṭila kāna zahūqan

And say, ‘The truth has come, and falsehood has vanished. Indeed falsehood is bound to vanish.’
82

wa-nunazzilu mina l-qurʾāni mā huwa shifāʾun wa-raḥmatun li-l-muʾminīna wa-lā yazīdu ẓ-ẓālimīna ʾillā khasāran

We send down in the Qurʾān that which is a cure and mercy for the faithful; and it increases the wrongdoers only in loss.
83

wa-ʾidhā ʾanʿamnā ʿalā l-ʾinsāni ʾaʿraḍa wa-naʾā bi-jānibihī wa-ʾidhā massahu sh-sharru kāna yaʾūsan

When We bless man, he is disregardful and turns aside; but when an ill befalls him, he is despondent.
84

qul kullun yaʿmalu ʿalā shākilatihī fa-rabbukum ʾaʿlamu bi-man huwa ʾahdā sabīlan

Say, ‘Everyone acts according to his character. Your Lord knows best who is better guided with regard to the way.’
85

wa-yasʾalūnaka ʾani r-rūḥi quli r-rūḥu min ʾamri rabbī wa-mā ʾūtītum mina l-ʿilmi ʾillā qalīlan

They question you concerning the Spirit. Say, ‘The Spirit is of the command of my Lord,1 and you have not been given of the knowledge except a few [of you].’2Or ‘the Spirit relates to the command of my Lord.’ Or ‘the Spirit proceeds from the command of my Lord.’Or ‘you have not been given of the knowledge except a little.’
86

wa-la-ʾin shiʾnā la-nadhhabanna bi-lladhī ʾawḥaynā ʾilayka thumma lā tajidu laka bihī ʿalaynā wakīlan

If We wish, We would take away what We have revealed to you. Then you would not find for yourself any defender against Us,
87

ʾillā raḥmatan min rabbika ʾinna faḍlahū kāna ʿalayka kabīran

except a mercy from your Lord. Indeed His grace has been great upon you.
88

qul la-ʾini jtamaʿati l-ʾinsu wa-l-jinnu ʿalā ʾan yaʾtū bi-mithli hādhā l-qurʾāni lā yaʾtūna bi-mithlihī wa-law kāna baʿḍuhum li-baʿḍin ẓahīran

Say, ‘Should all humans and jinn rally to bring the like of this Qurʾān, they will not bring the like of it, even if they assisted one another.’
89

wa-la-qad ṣarrafnā li-n-nāsi fī hādhā l-qurʾāni min kulli mathalin fa-ʾabā ʾaktharu n-nāsi ʾillā kufūran

We have certainly interspersed for the people this Qurʾān with every [kind of] parable, but most people are only intent on ingratitude.1Or ‘faithlessness.’ Cf. 17:99 below and 25:50.
90

wa-qālū lan nuʾmina laka ḥattā tafjura lanā mina l-ʾarḍi yanbūʿan

They say, ‘We will not believe you until you make a spring gush forth for us from the ground.
91

ʾaw takūna laka jannatun min nakhīlin wa-ʿinabin fa-tufajjira l-ʾanhāra khilālahā tafjīran

Or until you have a garden of date palms and vines and you make streams gush through it.
92

ʾaw tusqiṭa s-samāʾa ka-mā zaʿamta ʿalaynā kisafan ʾaw taʾtiya bi-llāhi wa-l-malāʾikati qabīlan

Or until you cause the sky to fall in fragments upon us, just as you would aver. Or until you bring Allah and the angels [right] in front of us.
93

ʾaw yakūna laka baytun min zukhrufin ʾaw tarqā fī s-samāʾi wa-lan nuʾmina li-ruqiyyika ḥattā tunazzila ʿalaynā kitāban naqraʾuhū qul subḥāna rabbī hal kuntu ʾillā basharan rasūlan

Or until you have a house of gold, or you ascend into the sky. And we will not believe your ascension until you bring down for us a book that we may read.’ Say, ‘Immaculate is my Lord! Am I anything but a human, an apostle?!’
94

wa-mā manaʿa n-nāsa ʾan yuʾminū ʾidh jāʾahumu l-hudā ʾillā ʾan qālū ʾa-baʿatha llāhu basharan rasūlan

Nothing kept the people from believing when guidance came to them, but their saying, ‘Has Allah sent a human as an apostle?!’
95

qul law kāna fī l-ʾarḍi malāʾikatun yamshūna muṭmaʾinnīna la-nazzalnā ʿalayhim mina s-samāʾi malakan rasūlan

Say, ‘Had there been angels in the earth, walking around and residing [in it like humans do], We would have sent down to them from the heaven an angel as apostle.’
96

qul kafā bi-llāhi shahīdan baynī wa-baynakum ʾinnahū kāna bi-ʿibādihī khabīran baṣīran

Say, ‘Allah suffices as a witness between me and you. Indeed He is well aware and percipient of His servants.’
97

wa-man yahdī llāhu fa-huwa l-muhtadi wa-man yuḍlil fa-lan tajida lahum ʾawliyāʾa min dūnihī wa-naḥshuruhum yawma l-qiyāmati ʿalā wujūhihim ʿumyan wa-bukman wa-ṣumman maʾwāhum jahannamu kullamā khabat zidnāhum saʿīran

Whomever Allah guides is rightly guided, and whomever He leads astray you will never find them any guardians besides Him. On the Day of Resurrection, We shall muster them [scrambling] on their faces,1 blind, dumb, and deaf. Their refuge shall be hell. Whenever it subsides, We shall intensify the blaze for them.Cf. 25:34; 54:48.
98

dhālika jazāʾuhum bi-ʾannahum kafarū bi-ʾāyātinā wa-qālū ʾa-ʾidhā kunnā ʿiẓāman wa-rufātan ʾa-ʾinnā la-mabʿūthūna khalqan jadīdan

That is their requital because they defied Our signs and said, ‘What, when we have become bones and dust, shall we really be raised in a new creation?’
99

ʾa-wa-lam yaraw ʾanna llāha lladhī khalaqa s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍa qādirun ʿalā ʾan yakhluqa mithlahum wa-jaʿala lahum ʾajalan lā rayba fīhi fa-ʾabā ẓ-ẓālimūna ʾillā kufūran

Do they not see that Allah, who created the heavens and the earth, is able to create the like of them? He has appointed for them a term, in which there is no doubt; yet the wrongdoers are only intent on ingratitude.1Or ‘faithlessness.’

qul law ʾantum tamlikūna khazāʾina raḥmati rabbī ʾidhan la-ʾamsaktum khashyata l-ʾinfāqi wa-kāna l-ʾinsānu qatūran

Say, ‘Even if you possessed the treasuries of my Lord’s mercy, you would withhold them for the fear of being spent, and man is very niggardly.’
101

wa-la-qad ʾātaynā mūsā tisʿa ʾāyātin bayyinātin fa-sʾal banī ʾisrāʾīla ʾidh jāʾahum fa-qāla lahū firʿawnu ʾinnī la-ʾaẓunnuka yā-mūsā masḥūran

Certainly We gave Moses nine manifest signs. So ask the Children of Israel. When he came to them, Pharaoh said to him, ‘O Moses, indeed I think you are bewitched.’
102

qāla la-qad ʿalimta mā ʾanzala hāʾulāʾi ʾillā rabbu s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍi baṣāʾira wa-ʾinnī la-ʾaẓunnuka yā-firʿawnu mathbūran

He said, ‘You certainly know that no one has sent these [signs] except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as eye-openers, and I, O Pharaoh, indeed think you are doomed.’
103

fa-ʾarāda ʾan yastafizzahum mina l-ʾarḍi fa-ʾaghraqnāhu wa-man maʿahū jamīʿan

He desired to exterminate them from the land, so We drowned him and all those who were with him.
104

wa-qulnā min baʿdihī li-banī ʾisrāʾīla skunū l-ʾarḍa fa-ʾidhā jāʾa waʿdu l-ʾākhirati jiʾnā bikum lafīfan

After him We said to the Children of Israel, ‘Take up residence in the land, and when the occasion of the other [promise] comes,1 We shall gather you in mixed company.’2Or ‘when the promise of the Hereafter comes.’Or ‘We shall bring you all together.’ Or ‘We shall bring you from all places.’
105

wa-bi-l-ḥaqqi ʾanzalnāhu wa-bi-l-ḥaqqi nazala wa-mā ʾarsalnāka ʾillā mubashshiran wa-nadhīran

With the truth did We send it down, and with the truth did it descend, and We did not send you except as a bearer of good news and as a warner.
106

wa-qurʾānan faraqnāhu li-taqraʾahū ʿalā n-nāsi ʿalā mukthin wa-nazzalnāhu tanzīlan

We have sent the Qurʾān in [discrete] parts so that you may read it to the people a little at a time, and We have sent it down piecemeal.
107

qul ʾāminū bihī ʾaw lā tuʾminū ʾinna lladhīna ʾūtū l-ʿilma min qablihī ʾidhā yutlā ʿalayhim yakhirrūna li-l-ʾadhqāni sujjadan

Say, ‘Whether you believe in it, or do not believe in it, indeed those who were given knowledge before it when it is recited to them, fall down in prostration on their faces,
108

wa-yaqūlūna subḥāna rabbinā ʾin kāna waʿdu rabbinā la-mafʿūlan

and say, “Immaculate is our Lord! Indeed Our Lord’s promise is bound to be fulfilled.”
109

wa-yakhirrūna li-l-ʾadhqāni yabkūna wa-yazīduhum khushūʿan

Weeping, they fall down on their faces, and it increases them in humility.’
110

quli dʿū llāha ʾawi dʿū r-raḥmāna ʾayyan mā tadʿū fa-lahu l-ʾasmāʾu l-ḥusnā wa-lā tajhar bi-ṣalātika wa-lā tukhāfit bihā wa-btaghi bayna dhālika sabīlan

Say, ‘Invoke “Allah” or invoke “the All-beneficent.” Whichever [of His Names] you may invoke, to Him belong the Best Names.’ Be neither loud in your prayer, nor murmur it, but follow a middle course between these,
111

wa-quli l-ḥamdu li-llāhi lladhī lam yattakhidh waladan wa-lam yakun lahū sharīkun fī l-mulki wa-lam yakun lahū waliyyun mina dh-dhulli wa-kabbirhu takbīran

and say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who has neither taken any son, nor has He any partner in sovereignty, nor has He [taken] any ally out of weakness,’ and magnify Him with a magnification [worthy of Him].
