The surah that mentions the ancient and might people of Thamūd that lived in a place or region named Ḥijr, and whom God destroyed because they belied with extreme prejudice His miraculous signs and messengers. It takes its name from Ḥijr (mentioned in verse 80). The people of Thamūd are an example of the many who disbelieved and rejected their prophets. Each has its own time for punishment so the Prophet should bear patiently, not grieve over what the disbelievers say, and continue with his worship. The surah is also known as: Stoneland, The Rocky Tract, The Stone Valley.

a-l-r (ʾalif lām rā) tilka ʾāyātu l-kitābi wa-qurʾānin mubīnin
Alif, Lām, Rā. These are the signs of the Book and a manifest Qurʾān.
2
rubamā yawaddu lladhīna kafarū law kānū muslimīna
Much will the faithless wish that they had been muslims.
3
dharhum yaʾkulū wa-yatamattaʿū wa-yulhihimu l-ʿamalu fa-sawfa yaʿlamūna
Leave them to eat and enjoy and to be diverted by longings. Soon they will know.
4
wa-mā ʾahlaknā min qaryatin ʾillā wa-lahā kitābun maʿlūmun
We did not destroy any town but that it had a known term.
5
mā tasbiqu min ʾummatin ʾajalahā wa-mā yastaʾkhirūna
No nation can advance its time nor can it defer it.
6
wa-qālū yā-ʾayyuhā lladhī nuzzila ʿalayhi dh-dhikru ʾinnaka la-majnūnun
They said, ‘O you, to whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are indeed crazy.
7
law mā taʾtīnā bi-l-malāʾikati ʾin kunta mina ṣ-ṣādiqīna
Why do you not bring us the angels should you be truthful?!’
8
mā nunazzilu l-malāʾikata ʾillā bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-mā kānū ʾidhan munẓarīna
We do not send down the angels except with due reason, and then they will not be granted any respite.
9
ʾinnā naḥnu nazzalnā dh-dhikra wa-ʾinnā lahū la-ḥāfiẓūna
Indeed We have sent down the Reminder,1 and indeed We will preserve it.That is, the Qurʾān.
10
wa-la-qad ʾarsalnā min qablika fī shiyaʿi l-ʾawwalīna
Certainly We sent [apostles] before you to former communities,
11
wa-mā yaʾtīhim min rasūlin ʾillā kānū bihī yastahziʾūna
and there did not come to them any apostle but that they used to deride him.
12
ka-dhālika naslukuhū fī qulūbi l-mujrimīna
That is how We let it pass through the hearts of the guilty:
13
lā yuʾminūna bihī wa-qad khalat sunnatu l-ʾawwalīna
they do not believe in it, and the precedent of the ancients has already passed.
14
wa-law fataḥnā ʿalayhim bāban mina s-samāʾi fa-ẓallū fīhi yaʿrujūna
Were We to open for them a gate of the sky, so that they could go on ascending through it,
15
la-qālū ʾinnamā sukkirat ʾabṣārunā bal naḥnu qawmun masḥūrūna
they would surely say, ‘Indeed a spell has been cast on our eyes; rather we are a bewitched lot.’
16
wa-la-qad jaʿalnā fī s-samāʾi burūjan wa-zayyannāhā li-n-nāẓirīna
Certainly We have appointed houses1 in the sky and adorned them for the onlookers,House: One of the 12 parts into which the heavens are divided in astrology. Cf. 25:61; 85:1.
17
wa-ḥafiẓnāhā min kulli shayṭānin rajīmin
and We have guarded them from every outcast Satan,
18
ʾillā mani staraqa s-samʿa fa-ʾatbaʿahū shihābun mubīnun
except someone who may eavesdrop, whereat there pursues him a manifest flame.1Or ‘meteor.’
19
wa-l-ʾarḍa madadnāhā wa-ʾalqaynā fīhā rawāsiya wa-ʾanbatnā fīhā min kulli shayʾin mawzūnin
And We spread out the earth, and cast in it firm mountains, and We grew in it every kind of balanced thing,
20
wa-jaʿalnā lakum fīhā maʿāyisha wa-man lastum lahū bi-rāziqīna
and made in it [various] means of livelihood for you and for those whom you do not provide for.
21
wa-ʾin min shayʾin ʾillā ʿindanā khazāʾinuhū wa-mā nunazziluhū ʾillā bi-qadarin maʿlūmin
There is not a thing but that its sources are with Us, and We do not send it down except in a known measure.
22
wa-ʾarsalnā r-riyāḥa lawāqiḥa fa-ʾanzalnā mina s-samāʾi māʾan fa-ʾasqaynākumūhu wa-mā ʾantum lahū bi-khāzinīna
And We send the fertilizing winds and send down water from the sky providing it for you to drink and you are not maintainers of its resources.
23
wa-ʾinnā la-naḥnu nuḥyī wa-numītu wa-naḥnu l-wārithūna
Indeed it is We who give life and bring death and We are the inheritors.
24
wa-la-qad ʿalimnā l-mustaqdimīna minkum wa-la-qad ʿalimnā l-mustaʾkhirīna
Certainly We know the predecessors among you and certainly We know the successors,
25
wa-ʾinna rabbaka huwa yaḥshuruhum ʾinnahū ḥakīmun ʿalīmun
and indeed it is your Lord who will resurrect them. Indeed He is all-wise, all-knowing.
26
wa-la-qad khalaqnā l-ʾinsāna min ṣalṣālin min ḥamaʾin masnūnin
Certainly We created man out of a dry clay1 [drawn] from an aging mud,Or ‘clinking clay,’ that is, giving a clinking sound due to being hard and dry. Cf. 15:28.
27
wa-l-jānna khalaqnāhu min qablu min nāri s-samūmi
and We created the jinn earlier out of a piercing fire.
28
wa-ʾidh qāla rabbuka li-l-malāʾikati ʾinnī khāliqun basharan min ṣalṣālin min ḥamaʾin masnūnin
When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed I am going to create a human out of a dry clay [drawn] from an aging mud.
29
fa-ʾidhā sawwaytuhū wa-nafakhtu fīhi min rūḥī fa-qaʿū lahū sājidīna
So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down in prostration before him.’
30
fa-sajada l-malāʾikatu kulluhum ʾajmaʿūna
Thereat the angels prostrated, all of them together,
31
ʾillā ʾiblīsa ʾabā ʾan yakūna maʿa s-sājidīna
but not Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated.
32
qāla yā-ʾiblīsu mā laka ʾallā takūna maʿa s-sājidīna
He said, ‘O Iblis! What kept you from being among those who have prostrated?’
33
qāla lam ʾakun li-ʾasjuda li-basharin khalaqtahū min ṣalṣālin min ḥamaʾin masnūnin

He said, ‘Begone hence, for you are indeed an outcast,
35
wa-ʾinna ʿalayka l-laʿnata ʾilā yawmi d-dīni
and indeed the curse shall lie on you until the Day of Retribution.’1Or ‘the Day of Judgement.’
36

qāla fa-ʾinnaka mina l-munẓarīna
Said He, ‘You are indeed among the reprieved
38
ʾilā yawmi l-waqti l-maʿlūmi
until the day of the known time.’
39
qāla rabbi bi-mā ʾaghwaytanī la-ʾuzayyinanna lahum fī l-ʾarḍi wa-la-ʾughwiyannahum ʾajmaʿīna
He said, ‘My Lord! As You have consigned me to perversity, I will surely glamorize [evil] for them on the earth, and I will surely pervert them, all
40
ʾillā ʿibādaka minhumu l-mukhlaṣīna
except Your exclusive servants among them.’
41
qāla hādhā ṣirāṭun ʿalayya mustaqīmun
He said, ‘This is the path [leading] straight to Me.1Read alternatively as hādhā ṣirāṭun ʿalīyyun mustaqīm, meaning ‘this is an exalted straight path.’ This reading is narrated from al-Imam al-Ṣādiq (Majmaʿ al-Bayān) and from thirteen other authorities, among them Yaʿqūb, al-Ḍaḥḥāk, Mujāhid, Qatādah, and Ibn Sīrīn. (See Muʿjam al-Qirāʾāt al-Qurʾāniyyah).
42
ʾinna ʿibādī laysa laka ʿalayhim sulṭānun ʾillā mani ttabaʿaka mina l-ghāwīna
Indeed as for My servants you do not have any authority over them, except the perverse who follow you,
43
wa-ʾinna jahannama la-mawʿiduhum ʾajmaʿīna
and indeed hell is the tryst of them all.
44
lahā sabʿatu ʾabwābin li-kulli bābin minhum juzʾun maqsūmun
It has seven gates, and to each gate belongs a separate portion of them.’
45
ʾinna l-muttaqīna fī jannātin wa-ʿuyūnin-i
Indeed the Godwary will be amid gardens and springs.
46
udkhulūhā bi-salāmin ʾāminīna
“Enter it in peace and safety!”
47
wa-nazaʿnā mā fī ṣudūrihim min ghillin ʾikhwānan ʿalā sururin mutaqābilīna
We will remove whatever rancour there is in their breasts; [intimate like] brothers, [they will be reclining] on couches, facing one another.
48
lā yamassuhum fīhā naṣabun wa-mā hum minhā bi-mukhrajīna
Therein neither weariness shall touch them, nor will they [ever] be expelled from it.
49
nabbiʾ ʿibādī ʾannī ʾana l-ghafūru r-raḥīmu
Inform my servants that I am indeed the All-forgiving, the All-merciful,
50
wa-ʾanna ʿadhābī huwa l-ʿadhābu l-ʾalīmu
and that My punishment is a painful punishment.
51
wa-nabbiʾhum ʿan ḍayfi ʾibrāhīma
And inform them about the guests of Abraham,
52
ʾidh dakhalū ʿalayhi fa-qālū salāman qāla ʾinnā minkum wajilūna
when they entered into his presence and said, ‘Peace!’ He said, ‘We are indeed afraid of you.’
53
qālū lā tawjal ʾinnā nubashshiruka bi-ghulāmin ʿalīmin
They said, ‘Do not be afraid. Indeed we give you the good news of a wise son.’
54
qāla ʾa-bashshartumūnī ʿalā ʾan massaniya l-kibaru fa-bi-ma tubashshirūna
He said, ‘Do you give me good news though old age has befallen me? What is the good news that you bring me?’
55
qālū bashsharnāka bi-l-ḥaqqi fa-lā takun mina l-qāniṭīna
They said, ‘We bring you good news in truth; so do not be among the despondent.’
56
qāla wa-man yaqnaṭu min raḥmati rabbihī ʾillā ḍ-ḍāllūna
He said, ‘Who despairs of his Lord’s mercy except those who are astray?!’
57
qāla fa-mā khaṭbukum ʾayyuhā l-mursalūna
He said, ‘O messengers, what is now your errand?’
58
qālū ʾinnā ʾursilnā ʾilā qawmin mujrimīna
They said, ‘We have been sent toward a guilty people,
59
ʾillā ʾāla lūṭin ʾinnā la-munajjūhum ʾajmaʿīna
[who shall perish] except the family of Lot. We will indeed deliver all of them,
60
ʾillā mraʾatahū qaddarnā ʾinnahā la-mina l-ghābirīna
except his wife, [who], We have ordained, will indeed be among those who remain behind.’
61
fa-lammā jāʾa ʾāla lūṭin-i l-mursalūna
So when the messengers came to Lot’s family,
62
qāla ʾinnakum qawmun munkarūna
he said, ‘You are indeed strangers [to me].’
63
qālū bal jiʾnāka bi-mā kānū fīhi yamtarūna
They said, ‘Rather we bring you what they used to doubt.
64
wa-ʾataynāka bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-ʾinnā la-ṣādiqūna
We bring you the truth, and indeed we speak truly.
65
fa-ʾasri bi-ʾahlika bi-qiṭʿin mina l-layli wa-ttabiʿ ʾadbārahum wa-lā yaltafit minkum ʾaḥadun wa-mḍū ḥaythu tuʾmarūna
Take your family in a watch of the night; and follow in their rear, and none of you should turn round, and proceed as you are bidden.’
66
wa-qaḍaynā ʾilayhi dhālika l-ʾamra ʾanna dābira hāʾulāʾi maqṭūʿun muṣbiḥīna
We apprised him of the matter that these1 will be rooted out by dawn. That is, the people of Sodom.
67
wa-jāʾa ʾahlu l-madīnati yastabshirūna
The people of the city came, rejoicing.
68
qāla ʾinna hāʾulāʾi ḍayfī fa-lā tafḍaḥūni
He said, ‘These are indeed my guests. Do not bring dishonour on me.
69
wa-ttaqū llāha wa-lā tukhzūni
Be wary of Allah and do not humiliate me.’
70
qālū ʾa-wa-lam nanhaka ʿani l-ʿālamīna
They said, ‘Did we not forbid you from [defending1] strangers?’Or, from entertaining.
71
qāla hāʾulāʾi banātī ʾin kuntum fāʿilīna
He said, ‘These are my daughters, [marry them] if you should do anything.’
72
la-ʿamruka ʾinnahum la-fī sakratihim yaʿmahūna
By your life, they were bewildered in their drunkenness.
73
fa-ʾakhadhathumu ṣ-ṣayḥatu mushriqīna
So the Cry seized them at sunrise,
74
fa-jaʿalnā ʿāliyahā sāfilahā wa-ʾamṭarnā ʿalayhim ḥijāratan min sijjīlin
and We made its1 topmost part its nethermost, and rained on them stones of shale. That is, of the city of Sodom.
75
ʾinna fī dhālika la-ʾāyātin li-l-mutawassimīna
There are indeed signs in that for the percipient.
76
wa-ʾinnahā la-bi-sabīlin muqīmin
Indeed it is on a standing road,
77
ʾinna fī dhālika la-ʾāyatan li-l-muʾminīna
and there is indeed a sign in that for the faithful.
78
wa-ʾin kāna ʾaṣḥābu l-ʾaykati la-ẓālimīna
Indeed the inhabitants of Aykah1 were wrongdoers.Apparently, one of the towns to which the prophet Shuʿayb (ʿa) was sent. Cf. 26:176; 38:13; 50:14.
79
fa-ntaqamnā minhum wa-ʾinnahumā la-bi-ʾimāmin mubīnin
So We took vengeance on them, and indeed the two of them1 are on an open highway. That is, Sodom and Aykah.
80
wa-la-qad kadhdhaba ʾaṣḥābu l-ḥijri l-mursalīna
Certainly the inhabitants of Ḥijr denied the apostles.
81
wa-ʾātaynāhum ʾāyātinā fa-kānū ʿanhā muʿriḍīna
We had given them Our signs but they disregarded them.
82
wa-kānū yanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan ʾāminīna
They used to hew out dwellings from mountains feeling secure.
83
fa-ʾakhadhathumu ṣ-ṣayḥatu muṣbiḥīna
So the Cry seized them at dawn,
84
fa-mā ʾaghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yaksibūna
and what they used to earn did not avail them.
85
wa-mā khalaqnā s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍa wa-mā baynahumā ʾillā bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-ʾinna s-sāʿata la-ʾātiyatun fa-ṣfaḥi ṣ-ṣafḥa l-jamīla
We did not create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them except with reason, and indeed the Hour is bound to come. So forbear with a graceful forbearance.
86
ʾinna rabbaka huwa l-khallāqu l-ʿalīmu
Indeed your Lord is the All-creator, the All-knowing.
87
wa-la-qad ʾātaynāka sabʿan mina l-mathānī wa-l-qurʾāna l-ʿaẓīma
Certainly We have given you [the sūrah of] the seven oft-repeated verses1 and the great Qurʾān.That is, the Sūrat al-Fātiḥah, the opening sūrah of the Qurʾān.
88
lā tamuddanna ʿaynayka ʾilā mā mattaʿnā bihī ʾazwājan minhum wa-lā taḥzan ʿalayhim wa-khfiḍ janāḥaka li-l-muʾminīna
Do not extend your glance toward what We have provided to certain groups of them, and do not grieve for them, and lower your wing to the faithful,1That is, be humble and gracious towards them. Cf. 17:24; 26:215.
89
wa-qul ʾinnī ʾana n-nadhīru l-mubīnu
and say, ‘I am indeed a manifest warner.’
90
ka-mā ʾanzalnā ʿalā l-muqtasimīna
Even as We sent down on the dividers,1Or ‘swearers.’
91
alladhīna jaʿalū l-qurʿāna ʿiḍīna
who reduced the Qurʾān into pieces,
92
fa-wa-rabbika la-nasʾalannahum ʾajmaʿīna
by your Lord, We will question them all
93
ʿammā kānū yaʿmalūna
concerning what they used to do.
94
fa-ṣdaʿ bi-mā tuʾmaru wa-ʾaʿriḍ ʿani l-mushrikīna
So proclaim what you have been commanded, and turn away from the polytheists.
95
ʾinnā kafaynāka l-mustahziʾīna
Indeed We will suffice you against the deriders
96
alladhīna yajʿalūna maʿa llāhi ʾilāhan ʾākhara fa-sawfa yaʿlamūna
—those who set up besides Allah another god. Soon they will know!
97
wa-la-qad naʿlamu ʾannaka yaḍīqu ṣadruka bi-mā yaqūlūna
Certainly We know that you become upset because of what they say.
98
fa-sabbiḥ bi-ḥamdi rabbika wa-kun mina s-sājidīna
So celebrate the praise of your Lord and be among those who prostrate,
99
wa-ʿbud rabbaka ḥattā yaʾtiyaka l-yaqīnu
and worship your Lord until certainty1 comes to you.Or ‘death.’
