Surah 107
الماعون
AL-MĀʿŪN
AID

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
The surah that chastises as irreligious and mean all those who withhold from the helpless and needy of the most basic forms of Aid. It takes its name from verse 7, in which “the aid” (al-māʿūn) occurs. The surah describes some characteristics of a person who denies the Judgement.The surah is also known as: Alms, Almsgiving, Charity, Common Kindnesses, Helping Others, Needs, Neighbourly Needs, The Neighbourly Assistance, Things of Common Use.

أَرَأَيتَ الَّذي يُكَذِّبُ بِالدّينِ

ʾa-raʾayta lladhī yukadhdhibu bi-d-dīni

Did you see him who denies the Retribution?

فَذٰلِكَ الَّذي يَدُعُّ اليَتيمَ

fa-dhālika lladhī yaduʿʿu l-yatīma

That is the one who drives away the orphan,
3
وَلا يَحُضُّ عَلىٰ طَعامِ المِسكينِ

wa-lā yaḥuḍḍu ʿalā ṭaʿāmi l-miskīni

and does not urge the feeding of the needy.
4
فَوَيلٌ لِلمُصَلّينَ

fa-waylun li-l-muṣallīna

Woe to them who pray,
5
الَّذينَ هُم عَن صَلاتِهِم ساهونَ

alladhīna hum ʿan ṣalātihim sāhūna

—those who are heedless of their prayers,
6
الَّذينَ هُم يُراءونَ

alladhīna hum yurāʾūna

those who show off
7
وَيَمنَعونَ الماعونَ

wa-yamnaʿūna l-māʿūna

but deny aid.
