The surah that opens with a threat of impending aliction and grief to The Scandal-monger or the slanderous reviler, one who, in greediness of wealth and acclaim, defames others. It takes its name from “the slanderer” (humazah) mentioned in verse 1. The surah condemns the greedy backbiter and gives a description of Hell.The surah is also known as: The Backbiter, The Gossipmonger, The Slanderer, The Slanderous Reviler.

وَيلٌ لِكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُمَزَةٍ
waylun li-kulli humazatin lumazatin-i
Woe to every scandal-monger and slanderer,
2
الَّذي جَمَعَ مالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ
alladhī jamaʿa mālan wa-ʿaddadahū
who amasses wealth and counts it over.
3
يَحسَبُ أَنَّ مالَهُ أَخلَدَهُ
yaḥsabu ʾanna mālahū ʾakhladahū
He supposes his wealth will make him immortal!
4
كَلّا ۖ لَيُنبَذَنَّ فِي الحُطَمَةِ
kallā la-yunbadhanna fī l-ḥuṭamati
No indeed! He will surely be cast into the Crusher.
